The Countdown Begins…

Peter King gets the “Favre Unretiring” ball rolling this week by stating:

I fully expect Favre’s agent to send a letter to the Packers within the next 10 days, stating that Favre, 38, wants to be taken off the National Football League’s reserve/retired list.

And so it begins. If King is correct (and his known relationship with Favre makes that a near certainty) the Packers will have no choice but to allow Favre back on the team. I mean, please, they won’t trade him. There’s no way they cut him. If that letter gets sent, and it sounds like it will be, Favre will be the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers in 2008.

Obviously, I have mixed feelings about this, as does most of Packerdom. My biggest question is this: Will EA be able to add Favre to the Packers’ roster in time for Madden ‘09?

UPDATE: If this is true, Favre’s return would not only screw over Aaron Rodgers, but Electronic Arts as well…;)

I’m sticking to my guns here. This isn’t a hobbled Marino potentially signing with Minnesota or a past his prime Montana signing with KC. Favre had a great season last year and should be welcomed back with open arms. With an emerging running game and a young, explosive WR that has a year of experience under their belt and added another explosive weapon, I think this team has a real shot in 2008. Not to mention a young and improving defense.

You’ve all read my take on Rodgers (who I actually like.) But if Rodgers was so good he would have been able to beat out a 38 year old who was coming off an average year and was faced with the task of picking up a new system.

Lastly, even though I am and always will be a Packer fan first, if I see Brett in another uniform, especially a Purple or Navy one, I think I might vomit.

You know where I stand on this from the previous post. If he wants in, they have to let him. But I have a bad feeling in my stomach. He needs to be even more committed than he was last year. Can Brett get up for the personal training sessions, for the nightly film study?

I don’t think he will. Brett craves the limelight that the NFL offers, but no longer wants to put in the hard hours. Make no mistake, Brett is the greatest QB ever, but why not go out gracefully? The Giants destroyed him in the playoff game because Brett can no longer handle OUR cold climate. Why else do you think he spends all that time in the miserably hot Mississippi? Stay retired Brett, WE HAVE ALL MOVED ON, AND WE DON’T NEED YOU!

So Brett had a bad game in the 3rd coldest game in the history of Lambeau Field, while at one point sitting on the sidelines freezing his rear-end off for almost a half hour and that leads you to the conclusion that he can no longer handle the cold? Come on. And what makes you think that Aaron Rodgers, he of Chico, CA, can handle the Wisconsin cold?

Everyone needs to look at this rationally and not from an emotional standpoint. The fact is Brett Favre had one of, if not the best season, in his illustrios career. I don’t think there is much of an argument to be made against the assertion that he was a top 5 QB last season.

Aaron has made some great points about him wearing down the past few years down the stretch, however, he should not have to shoulder as heavy a load this year. He should be pretty well acclimated to the offense by now, and I think we all believe the running game will be even better with Grant actually having an offseason in the system and Jackson having a year of experience.

I think that Rodgers will end up being a solid NFL QB, but if you think he gives us a better chance of winning in ‘08 then I think you’re delusional.

This is a team on the rise. The defense is young and improving (albeit with some older corners) and our WR corps is incredible. As mentioned ad nauseum, I am expecting big things from Grant and Co. this season. I just think it would be foolish to hitch this team up to a 24 year old, unproven QB (who, by the way, has gotten hurt every single time he has stepped on the field.) The window of opportunity in the NFL closes rather quickly, and I think we should reach for the brass ring when it is within our grasp.

Of course we do. And I won’t say you don’t have a good point, because you do. However, I would counter that that game alone did not do the damage to his rep in the cold - it was his demeanor in that game and the Bear game. Were they extraordinary circumstances? Yes. But it was the first time I’ve ever seen the elements get the better of Favre. It was shocking and, to me, signaled that the man is getting older and may need to make way for some new blood…
