Ted Thompson\'s Wish List

As close as the Packers came to the Super Bowl this year, there are numerous holes on the roster that need attention. Here's a very quick look at what I think the Packers Top 3 Wish List should be this offseason:

1. Offensive Guard

After two years, we know everything we need to know about guards Jason Spitz and Daryn Colledge. Now the only question is how they will progress physically. It would be paradise to know that Collegde, with another off season in the Packers strength and conditioning program, would blossom into a road grading guard, in the mold of a Pete Kendall or, heaven forbid, a Steve Hutchinson. But that's not going to happen. The Packers need to add a veteran to the motley crew of Colledge, Spitz and Coston, one that knows the position and is not afraid to maul somebody. As Thompson and McCarthy are fond of saying, competition breeds the best in players, but it's hard to know if you're getting a players best if he's competing against other stiffs.

2. Cornerback

With Al Harris' exposure in the NFC Championship, and Charles Woodson battling knee injuries most of the year, it's time for Thompson to add at least one, if not two, quality corners. One via the draft, if one makes sense and falls right on his board, and one via free agency. (Note, I said quality, not Frank Walker) The trifecta of Blackmon (always hurt) Bush (always mediocre) and Williams (always short) is not where the Packers want to place the future of their defensive backfield.

3. A dominate defensive tackle/end

Hey, it's called a 'Wish List' for a reason. No, these types of players are usually not available, but as the end of the season showed, the Packers have a lot of 'good' players on the defensive line. They need a great player. (And spare me the 'They should re-sign Corey Williams!" complaints. As I've said repeatedly, he's a good player, not a great player.) Remember, the Giants picked Osi Umenyiora in the second round with the 56th overall pick when they were already 'loaded' on the defensive line. Everyone thought Accorsi was crazy. He doesn't look so crazy now...

Too bad the Giants resigned Tuck.

I don't know about a dominant tackle or end. I think the platoon approach to teh D-line worked fairly well. I'd just like to see more linebacker pressure. Didn't seem like we were getting to the QB as much when the injuries started to hit the D-Line. Corners are going to be a neccessity (sp?). Back up Grant with one more RB, and maybe one more linebacker to rotate Popinga, Barnett, and Hawk.
