Ted Thompson Speaks

Thompson spoke with reporters this morning at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Here are some notes from Ted's appearance here at the Combine. As usual, he didn't say much.

  • He would not touch Cullen Jenkins' comments yesterday saying that they want to keep all their players.
  • Kept reiterating how he and his staff are going about "business as usual" in regards to the pending lockout.
  • Said several times how he truly thought that every single player on the roster had a hand in winning the championship.
  • Said that they definitely have physical guidelines that they follow when looking at prospects at certain positions, but said "...those are secret."
  • Best moment was out in the hallway when he was asked about whether the "Packer Way" might become the new "Patriot Way" Ted said no, every team has its own way of doing things. Said he took lots of congratulatory calls after the Super Bowl win and here at the Combine. "They've said congratulations. I used to do the same thing. I didn't mean it." It was brilliantly funny stuff.
  • Wouldn't speculate on who might play left guard if Daryn Colledge leaves in free agency.
  • Several times, Ted said he would not answer "hypothetical questions" mostly in regards to guys set to become free agents. They need to move the Combine back to after the start of free agency so Ted can't hide behind that one.
  • Was asked about trading Matt Flynn. Said that a lot of people are "getting ahead of themselves". "He's a part of our team."

I'll have some video of Ted's appearance shortly. Because the only thing that beats Ted in print - is Ted on video.

UPDATE: Here's a short clip.

He just doesn't have the personality you'd expect from a guy who played LB in the NFL for 10 years and had to tackle Earl Campbell in practice.

Aaron, if you get him 1-on-1, see if you can get him to let you know how much it meant to him that it was the Steelers we beat in the Super Bowl, being that it was the Steelers who broke the hearts of those Oilers teams he played on. Great work, dude!

Wow, Aaron, that was your voice asking Ted THompson about Cullen's comments, correct?

Does that seem surreal to you still? Or have you adjusted to the fact that you are starting to get a foothold?

I love it that TT actually has a sense of humor. "Said he took lots of congratulatory calls after the Super Bowl win and here at the Combine. "They've said congratulations. I used to do the same thing. I didn't mean it." Haven't watched the video yet but I gotta believe that's the most entertaining thing to ever come out of TT's mouth!
