Ted Thompson Confident that Derek Sherrod Will Play in 2013
After breaking two bones and undergoing two surgeries, Derek Sherrod has not played for the Packers since 2011. He spent all of last season on either the PUP or the Injured Reserve list. With depth at the tackle position thin and young, Sherrod - who is still on the PUP list - could be exactly what the Packers need.
In his press conference Tuesday morning, Packers GM Ted Thompson was asked about Sherrod.

Most reasonable scenario would be for SHERROD to start season on PUP and then get into action in October about the time injuries have depleted the OL group. Here's hoping. He was a good, not great, prospect until the leg injury.

CBS rated him #25 overall. He's not a shut down LT in the mold of a Joe Thomas, but he's shown to be a good pass blocking LT. His run blocking isn't his strong suit either, but he was thought to be a good to very good pass blocker. He has natural LT skills and measurable. Quick feet, long arms, but he is susceptible to power rushes and isn't a strong run blocker. Sounds similar to Chad Clifton who was never a good run blocker either.

I'm dubious but remain hopeful. I think he's just about a lock for PUP.

By now I'd thought that GB would be set at both tackles with the 2 first rounders: Bulaga and Sherrod. Looks like plans B and C are doing okay though.

You have to hope that Sherrod can have a decent career but the chances are slim, no fault to him, just bad "breaks". The days are over when an All-Pro offensive lineman can be replaced by moving another All-Pro from a different position when injuries force it(Forrest Gregg replaces Jerry Kramer at guard, Bob Skoronski replaces Jim Ringo at center). Man, those were the days, everyone complains about too many of Lombardi's Packers in the Hall of Fame - but they were that good.

In his senior season, playing in the very tough SEC, Sherrod did not give up a single sack. Not one, despite playing against a lot of pass rushers who were high picks in the draft.
Packer fans can only hope that he can get healthy and stay healthy because if he could, he'd be a big help to this line.

If...IF... the Packers offensive line can do well with their latest additions and moves (Bakhtiari and Barclay), think how much sounder the entire line will be upon the return of Bulaga, Sherrod, and the emergence of Tretter.

Wonder what is still holding him back. I imagine the bones have all healed by now. Is it the muscles around the bones or maybe nerve damage like Tramons(which I heard was hinted at)? If they can declassify Area 51, why can't we find out what's really going on with injuries in GB.

I think it's up to Sherrod whether he wants the details of his injury to be released to the public, and I can think of plenty of reasons why he wouldn't. All the Packers are required to do is notify the league of the likelihood that an injured player will play in the following game and identify the area of the injury. Teams still have to respect the privacy rights of their players.

I thought he was starting to look solid at RT in the couple games prior to the injury. Not sure he's a LT, but if he can get healthy could be an upgrade to Barclay/Newhouse at RT or swing T.

If Ted says he's gonna play, that's the best news on this guy in 18 months. I've got $10 that says he's better than Datko by December.

Datko was being projected as a low first round, high second before his injury. Thought HIS recovery would be better. Anyone have any information/insight on his the coaches perceive his ceiling/development?

LOL! The legend of Datko continues to grow. At the combine he got a draftable grade of 65, which equates to a 4th or later pick. And CBS had Datko at 220'ish, which equates to late round. His shoulder affected that grade somewhat, but his athleticism was a LONG way from being a late 1st or 2nd.
"He makes up for his average athletic ability by being technically sound, and is a get the job done player." Doesn't exactly speak to his ability. At most he might have been a late 3rd. He has nowhere near the ability to justify a pick in the 2nd.

WHo cares? Ted acts like he was all pro before his injury. Fact is he wasn't that good when he was playing and as I recall he actually came off the bench to fill in when he got steamrolled.
I get the strange feeling this guy has had all the football he wants. He has missed two full seasons, and last year he was expected back mid season and was so out of shape he couldn't play. Ditto this year as well.

Another one of Ted's late round blunders...right?
