Tauscher Back In the Fold

tauscher-back-in-the-fold

The band is back together again.

From Jason Wilde over at ESPNMilwaukee.com:

One day after doling out contract extensions to safety Nick Collins and Ryan Pickett, and one week after bringing back veteran left tackle Chad Clifton, the Packers agreed to terms on a two-year deal with veteran right tackle Mark Tauscher Saturday, an NFL source said.

So there’s that done. Which is nice.

  1. Ruppert says:

Nice! Glad to see Tauscher back. Now if we could take a cursory review of some OTHER teams’ UFAs…
    ______________
By the way, I love the new site. You guys crammed a lot of info on the front page, yet it’s not at all unwieldy, like many other sites. Nice work!

  2. Aaron Nagler says:

Thanks Ruppert – all Corey’s good work.

  3. PACKERS. says:

The Pack have done all of the internal work, and I’m glad they got it done early, so now it’s time to do some shopping. Do a little investigating, and sign whatever talent we can’t pick up in the draft.

    Go Pack Go!

  4. It’s another prime example of how classy these guys are. They both are long time beloved Packers, they know they are targeted for replacement, but no complaints.

This has not always been the case with our beloved veterans.

    • bomdad says:

IMO the Packers overpaid for Clifton, and I suspect they did the same for Tauscher…we’ll find out when the terms are let out. Not that these guys arent classy, but there was no hometown discount from guys that are signing their last contracts.

I take it all as a sign that mgmt is really seriously contending this season. Cant wait to see what other moves happen!

      • Ron LC says:

bomdad, Disagree with the over-payment concept. They are paying what they need to pay for two frontline tackles. If they play hardball at this position what do they have? Lang RT (ok- I hope) and Barbre/Giacomoni (awful)at RT. The only place Rodgers could get insurance would Loydd’s of London.

With Cilfton and Tauscher signed it buys them time to further develop Lang and find a suitable replacement for Tauscher. In addition to adding emergency depth.

If the Packers played hardball, where would they be? I shudder to think about it. The line that gave them a 7-1 finsh is back. Injury is now their biggest concern.

        Backups please, more backups please!

  5. Ruppert says:

I like the site so much, in fact, that I’m celebrating its rebirth by getting an avatar! High times around here!

  6. PackersRS says:

That is great news, as I still think Tauscher was one of the better Olinemen we had last year.

And now, with everyone that was worrisome signed, we can focus on that pesky Hunter Smith!

  7. NickGBP says:

So will Jason Wilde stop whining now?

  8. WoodyG says:

Bringing back both starting tackles is smart but ………. GB now has all it’s O-Line personnel in place …. Didn’t fans, bloggers & sportswriters present the OL as GB’s most glaring weakness? ………. It has to be the most maligned unit on the team in 2009 (next to ST) ……. Now everyone seems thrilled at returning the same unit as in 2009 …….. I sure hope TT & company have further plans to improve/change the OL …… It’s the key to 2010.

  9. packsmack25 says:

This is big, as now there is no chance of Barbre or Breno being an injury away from being on the field.

    • Ron LC says:

      PS25,

One injury no – Two, they’re Baaaack!

      More Backups needed. NOW!

      • packsmack25 says:

I’m assuming that TT drafts at least 1 tackle, so basically, 2 injuries would make the rookie tackle play, not one of those bums.

  10. Oppy says:

IMO, all the direly critical FA signings are completed. I think this year’s lesson learned is similar to the one we all should have learned from last off-season with Greg Jennings: Just because negotiations between the Packers and their players aren’t discussed publicly, doesn’t necessarily mean that they aren’t going on. Last off season, Greg Jennings didn’t know anything about any ongoing negotiations- turned out what he meant was he was letting his agent deal with the entire thing. Same seems to have held true with Nick Collins at the present- he said he didn’t know much about what was going on, he just let his agent deal with the entire thing. None the less, the fans whip themselves into a tizzy about how TT and the Packers are just letting players walk away, and not getting anything done. By now we Packers fans should have figured out that we know absolutely nothing about what’s going on until either a player has signed with us or he’s signed with someone else.
    .
On a completely seperate note, I now look forward to seeing if in the near future Tauscher and eventually Kampman are offered coaching assistant positions. Tauscher is almost a given he’d be offered- and I expect he’d accept. Native Wisconsin boy, played in WI his entire career, well respected by his coaches and peers… You get the picture. Comments made by McCarthy over the weekend suggest to me that the Packers would entertain the idea of offering Kampman a position once he retires, though I figure he’d pass on the offer to pursue missionary work abroad.

    • PackersRS says:

WOW! Tauscher as an assistant OL coach, and future OL coach, YES! I mean, he never played by being athletic or strong. He was allways about technique. If he’s able to pass on his knowledge, he’d make for one heck of a OL coach.
      -
The same can be said for Kampman, but he relied more on motor than technique…

  11. Packk66 says:

Great..one injury away from mediocrity again!! Yeah…

At least TT is consistent…Consistantly MEDIOCRE!!!

    hahaha

  12. ZeroTolerence says:

Look for a lot of D in the draft.

    • Aaron Nagler says:

Outside a possible left tackle or a running back, I agree Zero. Also wouldn’t be surprised to see TT take a WR on the second day. (Yes 2nd day of 3)

      • FITZCORE1252 says:

The new draft format BLOWS. I looked forward to draft weekend every year, now hopefully I get home in time to watch it or I’ll have to DVR it… LAME.

I hope it bombs, ratings wise (which it won’t) and goes back to the old format.

        • jerseypackfan says:

I like the new draft format this season. It gives the entire league 3 days to wheel and deal players and draft picks. I think you may be surprised at the end result.

          • FITZCORE1252 says:

I’d be all for it too If it didn’t conflict with my schedule. I’m sure it will be good for the league, just bad for me. I kinda enjoyed making a weekend event out of it.

  13. FITZCORE1252 says:

    Hey,

I thought this place went from Eastern time to “GBP” (A.K.A. Central time)? What gives man???

    GBP 4 LIFE

  14. jerseypackfan says:

Ok…I`ll be the first to say this since not one person had brought this up. I breathed a sigh of relief when LT signed with the NYJets tonight. I really did not want to see that guy in a Queens uniform.

    • FITZCORE1252 says:

Not scared of him at all anymore. He’s pretty bad in picking up the blitz, he may have contributed to CM3 ‘retiring’ brent for good.

      GBP 4 LIFE

  15. Hyperrevue says:

Totally opposite jersey. I wish he had gone to the Vikes. He’s done. Replacing Taylor with LT would have been a significant downgrade IMO.

  16. PackersRS says:

    I’m 100% sure LT is done as a feature back… And 60% sure he’s done splitting carries…

But as a third down back, I may be wrong, but I’d like to have him. He’s still fast, and he can block and catch better than anyone out there.

  17. Dilligaff says:

Now if only Iupatai falls to the 23rd pick, the Packs O-line will see improvement.

    • wgbeethree says:

Not sure I can get on the Iupati bandwagon. He’s awfully raw. Not sure I have enough faith in our Oline coaches ability to get the best out of him. Great “in the phonebooth” and once he gets his hands on you it’s over but known to to be a reacher/grabber when in space which is a situation he would likely find himself in often with the ZBS. Communication issues seemed to be a big problem with the line last year and not sure a “relative novice” to the game to whom English is a second language would help clear that up. I absolutely love his physical ability for a straight power running team. Probably the best prospect at guard in about a decade in that regard (you’d have to go back to Davis and Hutchinson in 01 IMO to find a better one) Not so sure I like his fit nearly as much for us though.

  18. Ruppert says:

I chuckled when LT signed with the Jets. I just can’t help but laugh when I think that Favre’s offseason “uncertainty” will be viewed as a huge reason he didn’t come to Minnesota. And I love the fact that Favre’s uncertainty is affecting other aspects that team.
    _________
From a football standpoint, LT’s best days are gone. But losing Chester Taylor and not replacing him creates uncertainty and possibly a downgrade in Minnesota’s backup RB situation. I like that a lot.

  19. Black Hawk says:

If LT would have signed with the Queens, I think it would of caused a bit of a stir in the locker room, especially if they started losing. LT could have complained…that this Hall of Famer has to practice all summer, while primma donna Hall of Famer can practice when he feels like it?

  20. Pack66 says:

    You guys crack me up…

What sour grapes. The Packers didn’t lay a glove on the Favre last year (and WON’t this year!)

The bottom line is that the VIKINGS are BETTER than the Packers and will CONTINUE to be, as long as TT is GM..

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA..

  21. Black Hawk says:

Pack66…hope your enjoying the drama from the drama queen…

  22. Pack66 says:

    Wow…

So he’s resigning the same team that couldn’t get it done last year. You all are right, we should be happy with that-fail. You guys just don’t get it do you? These signings do not make the team better, just the same, and the same will not get the team to the SB. It won’t allow it to compete with the best teams in the league. The only constant from last year is we will be better than the worst teams, but not nearly as good as the top ones
