Sunday Practice Notes: The Injury Carousel Continues For Wide Receivers

Sunday's practice featured three receivers returning to action while three more watched from the sidelines.

The Packers returned to practice Sunday after a come-from-behind win in exhibition play against the Indianapolis Colts on Friday night. As the team prepares to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Thursday's preseason finale a few familiar faces will likely be held out of the action.

Rookie receiver Randall Cobb returned to practice Sunday, but according to Vic Ketchman of Packers.com, the team’s second-round draft choice “appeared to be limited” by a bruised knee. Undrafted rookie receiver Shaky Smithson also returned to practice after missing the last two contests with a shoulder injury. Fans and coaches alike exhaled a collective sigh of relief as top wideout Greg Jennings returned to practice as well.

Don’t expect Jennings or Cobb to play much – if they even suit up – against the Chiefs, but Smithson, who remains a long shot to make the roster, should see extensive playing time.

While a trio of receivers returned to the field, another three pass catchers were sidelined. Jordy Nelson was held out of practice due to what coach McCarthy described as a knee bruise suffered against the Colts. Also watching practice from the sidelines was tight end Jermichael Finley who is recovering from a sprained ankle. Like Jennings and Cobb, both players will likely sit out the final preseason game in order to be healthy for the season opener against the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, September 8. James Jones entered the day healthy, but finished practice with an ice bag wrapped around his right knee with what McCarthy characterized as (you guessed it) a knee bruise.

Two members of the defensive backfield also missed Sunday’s practice: Nick Collins (back) and Josh Gordy (shoulder).

Knee bruise = the new hammy?

Bruises heal fairly quickly relative to a lot of the common knee injuries we hear about. Don't remember anyone going to IR for a bruise. If we have to be injured, I'm all for knee bruises.
