Statistical Look from PFF at Packers vs. Lions (Week 14)

Using statistical analysis from Pro Football Focus, we break down the Packers' 27-20 win over the Detroit Lions in Week 14.

With thanks to Bryan Hall and our good friends at Pro Football Focus, here’s a closer look at some of the key statistics from the Green Bay Packers’ 27-20 win over the Detroit Lions in Week 14 Sunday:

  • Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was under pressure on 12 of his 29 dropbacks. Overall, Rodgers' 21 "aimed passes" (not including passes thrown away, spiked, batted down or thrown while getting hit) was his lowest of the 2012 season.
  • Despite a strong running game, the Packers called just five play-action passes.
  • The offensive line allowed 15 quarterback disruptions. Marshall Newhouse was responsible for six hurries. The rest of the pressures: Evan Dietrich Smith three (sack, hit, hurry), Jeff Saturday zero, Josh Sitton zero, Don Barclay five (five hurries). Rodgers was credited with two sacks and a hurry.
  • Green Bay ran 13 times to the right of center. The results? 84 yards and a touchdown. Sitton (+2.6) and Barclay (+2.1) both received positive grades in the run game.
  • Running back snap counts: Alex Green 32, John Kuhn 21, DuJuan Harris seven, Ryan Grant two.
  • Rookie offensive lineman Greg Van Roten played five snaps, three at tight end and two at fullback.
  • Randall Cobb (42 snaps) once again led the team in targets (seven). He caught all seven for 102 yards, with 47 coming after the catch. All 24 of Cobb's routes came from the slot.
  • The rest of the receiver snaps: James Jones 50, Greg Jennings 42, Jarrett Boykin six, Donald Driver three.
  • Only five of Jennings' 26 routes came from the slot.
  • Jermichael Finley received just 27 snaps. The rest of the tight ends: Tom Crabtree 13, D.J. Williams 13, Ryan Taylor two.
  • Green and Jones were charged with the two drops. Jones' drop on a quick bubble screen was the more egregious of the two.
  • Dezman Moses (71 snaps), Erik Walden (72) and Frank Zombo (27) combined for two quarterback disruptions (hit, hurry). The three had 89 pass-rushing opportunities (pressure on under two percent of pass rushes). All three ranked at the very bottom of PFF's pass-rushing efficiency numbers for Week 14.
  • Casey Hayward and Tramon Williams played all 85 defensive snaps.
  • Davon House started at right cornerback but played just 27 snaps. Sam Shields played 59.
  • B.J. Raji's 65 snaps were a season high. Same goes for rookie Mike Daniels, who played 34. The Packers were without both C.J. Wilson and Mike Neal Sunday night.
  • Over 20 pass-rushing snaps, Jerel Worthy had one quarterback hit and two hurries.
  • Linebacker Brad Jones allowed a team-high seven receptions for 66 yards. Most were dump offs to backs.
  • Williams, Hayward and Shields were targeted a combined 22 times. The trio allowed nine catches for 100 yards, but a long of just 19 yards.
  • House was targeted four times, allowing four catches for 54 yards. He was also responsible for one of the two missed tackles.
  • Two of Tim Masthay's three punts were downed inside the 20-yard line. His net kicking average was 31.0 yards.

We need another elite pass rusher. We need another elite pass rusher. We need another elite pass rusher. We need another elite pass rusher.

Elite pass rusher? Heck, I'd settle for a mediocre one right now.

I'd settle for another average pass rusher at this point, Chad.

The fans of 31 other teams think the same thing about their own team.

We just need 3 guys back from injury next year: Desmond Bishop. Nick Perry. Smith. That would improve things dramatically. Remember we are using second and third stringers here.

"Casey Hayward and Tramon Williams played all 85 defensive snaps."

that's exactly what it should've been.

"Mozes, Walden, Zombo....combined for two quarterback disruptions... The three had 89 pass-rushing opportunities"

that stat is so beyond pathetic I can't even put it into words. Can you imagine the LB meeting room watching that tape? Terrible. Awful. Zombo shouldn't even be on the team. There are better guys out there, esp. after watching Stafford pancake him. He should be embarrassed.

I was expecting bad stats on the OLB's but that is worse than I thought, less than 2% effectiveness means they should be standing on the sideline.

Can Barclay play OLB too?

Put it in context. One of the defensive lineman, Jerel Worthy, a guy criticized for having an on/off motor, generated more QB pressure than the three OLBs combined. This in a system where the DL is supposed to eat blockers, and the LBs are supposed to make plays.

It's not fair to judge House too much right now, but right now, he's the 4th CB.

I'm going to guess House's illness they're reporting had a play in this. Until this game he's put up some stellar performances.

The Lions made a point in targeting House early on, to devastating effect. Glad Capers was able to see it quickly and adjust, not always the case.

IIRC it's the third week where House's play is not up to standard. Good thing CB is one of the deepest positions on our roster (I KNOW!!! Without Woodson!).

Anyway, once Clay is back there'll be better pressure. Now if only McCarthy could call some slants...

ARod just shot the idea of slants down on his radio show. I guess all of us can stop asking for it now. he said it doesn't work well against zone, which is pretty much all they face.

Did AR say anything about why the receivers can't seem to get open when he is rolling out? Why isn't someone running in or to the sidelines for a short pickup rather than AR having to throw it away or run it himself?

Because the roll-outs are rarely play action. In that scenario there are 7 defenders in coverage and Rodgers has only 1/3rd of the field as an option, likely less when you consider the fact that he doesn't always get the option to set his feet when throwing under duress. With that limited amount of field and the sheer number of bodies converging in a small space it becomes less and less likely a player can get open the closer Rodgers flows to the sideline. Once Rodgers is out of the tackle box I'm pretty sure receivers get roughed up more, too.

Pretty much all they face is zone coverage? What? Where did this come from?

Looks are not deceiving when it comes to our LB corps. They looked like dog poo on Sunday and statistically, they were dog poo.

Not to take away from looking forward to this particular column on Cheesehead, but I'm awful at searching online. Is there a site that shows the Packers grades each game, i.e. the plus or minus grades per individual player at their position?

The more weeks I read these stats, the more I question if Newhouse is our LT long term. I know Sherrod is in the bullpen, but he's shown exactly squat. I don't want to have to worry about LT dammit!

Those LB pressure stats are just piss-poor, really pathetic. We need to acquire more talent there in the offseason, I don't care how.

TT has to add a quality OT and a C on the Oline, and another great pass rusher, this of season. His whole draft should be focused on Oline and a pass rusher (with an optional K). Moving up in the draft would be wise. By filling these in the draft, and with all the players coming of IR, these team will be set for a SB title next year.

Hopefully, the Pack wins the SB this year, but, its unlikely with this Oline.
