Rodgers, Packers Reportedly Getting Close on Record Deal

Much of the talk, and inaction of the Packers, from the off season revolved around the Packers trying to save money so that they can re-sign the valuable players already on their roster like Clay Matthews and Aaron Rodgers.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Packers and Aaron Rodgers are close to a deal.

The rumored deal would make Rodgers the highest-paid player in NFL history.

Let's see if Schefter is actually right on this one. If they aren't spending money on so-so free agents in order to make ARod a Packer for life, I'm all for it. We go as ARod goes.

Silverstein echos this.

In fact, he adds that Matthews is all but done too.

"The Packers have $18 million in salary cap space that is there for a reason. They have been working on deals for Rodgers and Matthews since the season ended and there's a good chance that all but a few details were worked out between negotiator Russ Ball and agent David Dunn at the NFL owners meetings."

Reading the first 7 words of that really made me uncomfortable.

Really?

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

I just remember the comfort when the previous QB signed 10yr/$100M. All settled after that.

Im going to have to pull the data some time soon. The fact that Brady has not won one since getting his money makes me uneasy. We saw this with Brent. Win a SB with an underpaid QB. Watch team skill level sink. Watch QB get frustrated. So went Brent. So goes Brady. So will go Rodgers?

18M in cap space. Rodgers gets at least 11M + his current contract at just short of 10M. Down to 7M in cap space.

IIRC Matthews is set to make at 5M or so on his current deal. Matthews will get north of 10M per, thats another additional 5M taken from the cap. Down to 2M in total cap room.

Draft picks will eat up whatever is remaining in cap rooom. Every bit of posssible cap room accounted for! Any questions of all the Haters crying for Thompson to sign a FA, any FA?!

Any FA would have taken serious adjustments to get under the cap w/ Rodgers and Matthews!
