Report: Wells "Has Picked His New Team"

A source tells Bill Huber of Packer Report that the veteran center is as good as gone.

From Bill Huber over at PackerReport:

The Green Bay Packers would like Wells back, but it apears general manager Ted Thompson is going to follow the same route he took last year with receiver James Jones. Jones hit free agency, talked with a few times but eventually returned to Green Bay when the market dried up.

With Wells, that appears highly unlikely. Wells is coming off the best three years of his career, capped by a Super Bowl championship in 2010 and his first Pro Bowl in 2011.

In fact, a separate source said Wells already has picked his new team. We’re not allowed to say who that team is, only that a deal will be struck quickly after free agency begins.

The Packers have reportedly shown interest in Texans' free agent center Chris Meyers. Bob McGinn recently reported that a Packers representative met with Meyers' agent  Drew Rosenhaus at the Scouting Combine last month.

He gone. Get a cheaper replacement TT, lots of $$$ contracts coming up in 2013.

I wish it weren't so, but Wells is stubborn, and so is TT.

let him walk

myers is the same age as wells. it really wouldn't make sense to get him unless ted can get an incredible bargain.

Yes. And I wonder if he will be any cheaper.

Maybe a little. Maybe not.

If not, there are many other competent C's out there in FA this year. TT either has to find one, or spend a high end pick on one of the 3 good C's in the draft.

I hope (for once) he gets a FA. It's much easier to find a cheap FA C that's at least servicable, than it is to find a cheap FA pass rusher...

Mark it down.... Evan Dietrich-Smith is your Center baby, whoo!! He's younger, we'll be able to groom him, he's considerably cheaper, and already has a headstart on handling the offense..

Although I like Konz, I hope this doesn't mean the Pack end up drafting him. We need pass-rush help above everything else.

And now, with Neal out (again) even more run stopping help.

Pickett ain't getting any younger. And Raji can't play 80% of the time - look what it did to him last year.

As a Michigan fan, I'd love to see them draft David Molk in the 3rd or 4th round. He's one of the most underrated O-Linemen in the draft.

When a center goes you have two losers. The team that loses a center familiar with the scheme and the team that gains a center unfamiliar with the scheme.

No surprise really. Glad we didn't over pay for a center. We won't be getting Myers that's for sure. I reckon it will be EDS and draft pick. As BJ says hopefully Molk. The only free agent center I see us signing is Todd McClure, old cheap vet from the Falcons, he knows the zone scheme.

I'll be concerned when the report is "Wells to sign with X team".

We're not allowed to say the team sounds a little far-fetched, considering what happens all around the news.

It could be true. It could also be that either the reporter is paying the agent, or that the reporter doesn't trust the source enough to name the team.

All I know is if we go center at 28, my head may explode. Seriously.

No shit -- mine would explode as well.

Who was the last center to be taken in the 1st round? that mouth-kisser with Pittsburgh?? and I heard a lot more about that guy than Konz.

If Ted doesn't go with a big body, with athletic skill -- he'll likely trade down.

I wish we could get Reyes/McClellin/Massaquoi

This is from left field but I really don't care what happens in free agency just as long as Flynn doesn't go to the Vikings.

Lets see, no starting center and short one starting tackle. Can the pack get an offensive line together and fix the defense through the draft?

I am having flash backs of the 2009 season

Don't say that so loud. There are people here who think the Pack will always win even if they sleepwalk through free agency & the draft.

Isn't GB the only team in the NFL where 25% of it's roster is paid to catch passes? Maybe this has something to do with a lack of talent at OLB & the DL. Just a guess.

Sleepwalk through free agency, yes. The draft, no.

And I'm not worried about tackle. If they move Bulaga to the left and then let Newhouse and hopefully a healthy Sherrod battle for the right. That looks good to me.

+1

Are we really going get our undies in a bundle over this? Anything above a second tier FA will wreck our chances to re-sign our playmakers for next year.

Take a pill (unless you're Neal).
