Report: Packers' Nick Perry activated off of PUP list

-- The Green Bay Packers are getting some reinforcements infused back into their defense this week.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers activated Nick Perry off of the physically unable to perform list on Sunday, giving him some time before the start of the regular season to get however many physical reps he needs.

Perry opened up training camp on the PUP list with an ankle injury alongside starting right tackle Bryan Bulaga, who was still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last November in a Monday night game against the Detroit Lions.

The expectation was that both would be ready for the September 9 season opener against the Chicago Bears. According to reports, Perry passed his physical and his chances shouldn't be hindered.

Now, Perry's activation will eliminate any chance of him opening the year on the regular-season PUP list, which would require him to miss the first six weeks of meaningful play before being eligible to be promoted to the Packers' active roster.

After registering a career-high 11 sacks in 2016, Perry netted a monstrous five-year, $60 million dollar contract extension after the season. The following year, he only played in 12 games while dealing with hand, ankle and shoulder injuries. Perry also placed with a bulky club on one of his hands late in 2016.

The Packers are expecting Perry to continue playing a significant role on the edge, even more so now under new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. There's a little more insurance now thanks to the emergence of Reggie Gilbert in the last two exhibition contests, but the Packers need as much stability at outside linebacker as they can get.

Coach Mike McCarthy said last week that Perry's workload on the side during practice has been gradually increasing, though, the team had no specific date for when he would be activated to the roster.

"We need me for the war," Perry said after Tuesday's practice. "Right now, we're just being smart about it. Everybody knows what I'm about when I'm out there on the field. It's just the collective thing that we want to make sure that we hit everything, hit all the checkpoints, before jumping out there and getting after it.

"It'll come. I'm not worried about that part. Just making sure every day that I'm mentally and physically prepared for whenever they call me."

Perry felt he could've played in the Packers' second preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, however, the team's training staff is gradually easing him back into play. That shouldn't be the case for the next two weeks.

I'd hate to stunt their development. :)

This is great news. Watching Fackrell and Biegel trying to pass rush and set the edge was painful. Hopefully Perry can at least make it through the Vikings game as It would be nice to get 2 important division games out of him before he needs to wear a club or something.

Yes absolutely. I was thinking something similar in that, I'd prefer he missed the first few weeks of the preseason rather than starting fully healthy to only get injured at the onset and then miss the rest of the preseason games entirely. And of course the endless questions about how much of the season he will miss.

Perry over/unders for 2018:

1. He will appear in 11 games
2. He will show for up and make a play in 6 games.

Thanks, Since '61

I set the over/under at 10.5.
How many game changing plays he makes...Zero
How many garbage time sacks he gets...enough to make some continue supporting having him.

My over under for Monty. He will appear in 6 games and never have more than 80 combined yards rushing, receiving or returning in a game.

Whats your take 61?

My take is that Monty is a better player than 80 combined yards per game.
I'm not saying that will have more than 80 combined yards every game but until the return of Aaron Jones he will get his chances as an RB and a receiver.

When healthy Monty has demonstrated that he is a solid runner and a good receiver out of the backfield. IMO, the Packers would be wise to get him the ball in space as often as possible.

It's difficult to estimate how many games any RB will appear in given the number of hits they take especially if they are part of pass protection. Also, I'm not sure how his asthma limits his number of snaps.

I hope/expect Monty to get 10 - 12 touches a game and maybe more when there are injuries to the Packers RB rotation. I believe that he will have 3-4 games where he has more than 80 combined yards. Time will tell. Thanks, Since '61

Let me ask you something WKU. What is your purpose on here? I've been posting on here for a couple months, and i have never seen you post anything of substance, informative, or anything remotely entertaining. All I've seen is you trying to be a grammar cop or launch personal insults at anyone that you dont agree with.

How your account has not been deactivated, i wish I knew. I"m hoping that whomever owns or moderates this site see's your above post and and bans you like you so desperatly deserve!

There is an old phrase that i personally believe in. The person who is the quickest to point the finger at someone else, usually has the most to hide.

According to you: I am a racist, so is taryn and ALP. Anyone and everyone whom you disagree with is a racist. Read the above phrase again and take a look in the mirror. Once again I'll bet the phrase is accurate.

If you dont like my posts or comments, too bad! I have just as much right to post here as anyone else. If my comments are not to your liking, my advice to you would be to not read them.

For you to come on here and call people you dont even know stupid, call them racists and hurl personal insults their way shows what a nasty, bitter, friendless person you really are.

Great comment, Tornado.

I've never filed any complaints with Cheesehead about WKU, but it's sickening that they let him keep posting. I assume it's because they share his views outside sports. Judging from a few of their articles, that seems very likely.

But such favoritism has no place here. We all get feisty, but WKU and his not-so-merry band of supporters cross too many lines--I would have been banned many times over if I acted like WKU.

Oh well, Cheesehead will let him stay. Whatever. At any rate, great comment by you.

Nick Perry plays at a high level when he's healthy. It is out of his control if his hand breaks, his ankle or knee is sprained, etc and so forth. If the team gives him the green light to play, he plays through those injuries- something many of you yell and scream players need to do more of- but his production suffers. So which is it? Do you want guys who play through INJURY (not just pain, but INJURY) like a warrior? Or do you want players who sit on the sidelines until they are 100% effective again?

Nick Perry's 2016 campaign wasn't a monster year because his contract was on the line. It's an easy narrative to promote though. It's the only year he's been primarily without foot, shoulder, knee, or hand injury (He did end up injuring the hand in December).

I get it. People are frustrated because he's injuried all the time. And the Packers gave him a contract hoping his injury problems were behind him, and they aren't. But Nick Perry plays at a very high level when he's healthy, and has played through injury as often as he's been allowed. Outside of begging God to keep him healthy, there's not much else you can ask for. It's not Nick's fault he has injuries, and it's not Nick's fault the Packers paid him.

I agree. Perry is an absolute beast when healthy. I love how he can set the edge and still get to the QB. He can take on double teams and still rock the QB. The guy is an absolute nightmare for Offenses to deal with. I wonder if that has something to do with his injuries as well. I'd like him to be injured less, too, but any year it's possible that he doesn't get injured, and if he doesn't, I think a lot of Packers fans will be surprised by how much production he puts up.

Perry is a player who WANTS to play. The Packers medical staff and trainers are noted as being very conservative with injured players. How many times have we read about how the player wants to practice/play and he isn't allowed to? I think you nailed the fan comments with this one, Oppy! The players are damned if they do, and damned if they don't. Perry has played better with a club on his hand than a bunch of other two handed healthy players for cripes sake.

We all agree, 4thand1. We would love to see the guy playing consistent, dominant, football and to be available for a whole season. It's just that this hasn't been the case with Perry and we are just venting frustration. With the amount of money he has cost the team, the return on investment hasn't matched.

Here's to Perry staying 100% healthy this year and playing at a pro bowl level. Hope Daniels and Bulaga are ready to go soon.

Is anyone interested in FS/SS George Iloka. He has been a starter for the Bengals for a while. He is okay I guess. I read Cincy Jungle and the fans were surprised and generally thought he was pretty good. Pure cap casualty, apparently. Cincy used a 2nd on a rookie safety who apparently looks very good. Iloka saves something like $4M on the cap. Not sure what the market is for safeties.

Iloka is 6'3.5" inches with incredible 34.5" long arms. Not fast, (4.66 forty at the combine) but good in run support and zone, not so good in man, based solely on the sb nation outlet, cincy jungle. Was their FS, but he has played SS as well.

The Bengals saved 4.4 mil cutting him bit they had other players like Matt Barkley they could have cut to save money. Not sure why Iloka was cut but he's definately worth a shot for the right price. So far in preseason safety play has been bad. HHCD is missing tackles, Brice is blowing coverages, JJ has been a ghost.

I rewatched the Steelers game and Gilbert looks the real deal so far. He is lightning quick outside, and can make moves to the inside. I know it's pre season but he was doing this early with a lot of starters in. We have a diamond in the ruff IMO......................finally. So if Perry and CM get dinged up, we have a guy who can step in. In fact he may get more snaps than either Perry or CM before the end of the season. Don't sit on him like Bishop.

Perry got his big deal in and like too many NFL players kind of go on auto pilot the following year.

When you analyze his 2017 season...it was pretty bad. Playing in 12 games he did get 7 sacks but fattened up by getting the Bears for 3 in the first meeting and 1.5 against one of the worst O lines in the NFL vs Seattle. The $60 Million Man "collected" 2.5 additional sacks in the remaining 10 games.

He sets a good edge against the run but he was paid to get to the QB.

Biegel and Fackrell just can't shed blockers and get off them. Vince has a non stop motor but it hasn't been enough.

Reggie on the other hand is very good at disengaging from blockers and getting around or dipping under them. He gives me hope...but the Edge depth is awful given injury histories.

Mack would be ideal and another report yesterday said the Pack was working out final details with the Raiders for a deal...believe it when I see it.

If by "Auto pilot" you mean, "he was injured" then you're spot on.
Playing through significant injury and reduced snaps/missed games due to injury has a strong correlation to Perry's production over the years.

OCT 2012: Knee Tear 18% of defensive snaps played, 2 sacks, 18 combined tackles (tackles & assists)

OCT 2013: Pedal Foot Fracture (re injured NOV) 35% snaps played, 4 sacks, 28 tackles

NOV 2014: Shoulder Labrum Tear (played with it during season, then had surgery) 33% snaps played, 3 sacks, 22 tackles

OCT 2015: Shoulder (Re injured, DEC) 33% snap, 3.5 sacks, 32 tackles

DEC 2016: Hand (week 13- missed next two games) 58.6% Snaps, 11 sacks, 52 Tackles

SEP 9th 2017: Hand/Wrist Fracture (reinjure, Sept 17)
DEC 3- Shoulder (Reinjure, Dec 17) Still somehow manages to play in 12 games in 2017, playing 52% of snaps despite broken hand / bad shoulder all season. 7 Sacks, 38 Tackles.

There's ZERO "coasting" by Nick Perry in 2017. He played with a broken hand and bad shoulder, literally for the entire year. He still played over 50% of all defensive snaps. He still put up 7 sacks.

Nick Perry is clearly "Injury Prone". However, the narrative that he's not a talented football player, or that he simply only played hard to get a contract and now is an unmotivated player is ridiculous and is not supported at all by his actions or his statistics.
