He can't grab anyone w/ a club on his hand or if he can't use his thumb. He'll likely miss a couple weeks then play w/ a club for a month or more. It'll be 2 month or more before it heals enough to play w/o one. If he has surgery and needs a pin in the thumb it'll probably be a month before he is allowed to play again.

I've experienced it too Evan - there are so many more people on here these days that say things like that for real that people can't see the sarcasm anymore. Sad state of affairs.

2-6 weeks depending on if he needs a pin. After that he'll need a club for a period of time. Given how much of his game is his handwork, I'd be surprised if he's as effective with a club.

On the bright side we'll get to see Nick Perry play on the right for awhile. He looked like a different guy there.

I said on another thread/site that Perry is limited by playing the strong side. If Matthews is out awhile you'll see a different Perry. He'll have a lot more freedom to rush the QB if he's playing the weak OLB spot. In the Packers/Pitts schemes the strong OLB has a lot more responsibilities besides pass rushing that people don't take into account and prevents Perry from being able to rush the QB anyway he wants. That would fall on Neal IMO and we'll see Perry being turned loose in the way Matthews is allowed. Losing Matthews would still hurt but it'll give Perry a better chance to shine.

If Matthews needs surgery, he'll be out for a few weeks and limited for another month at the minimum. I Broke my thumb mountain biking and needed a pin. It would keep Matthews out a couple weeks for sure and he would be in a club for another 4-6 weeks. Looking at about a 2 month to 10 week full recovery time depending on the severity.

I agree. I was writing him off as a bust but today Perry looked good. I thought the four man front looked good to versus that stupid 7 man alignment that confuses even them.
If they know your rushing the passer the surprise is gone and surprise, they passed an out that got a first down.

That's what I'm thinking. With Francois out for the year, I would sign Manning from SD and give him another shot. I still think the guys got a lot of talent, just needs to get serious about football or something. Not sure why he didn't play well this training camp, but he knows the scheme and can step in on ST, so he makes the most sense IMO. Bring back Manning!

Spikes is available. The other backup don't exactly strike fear. Mathews is the pass rush.

Another note watching the Houston game, maybe Datone should be watching JJ Watt, who extends his arms up the deflect pass attempts.

I just wonder if there was anything the Packers training staff could have done in terms of different exercises during training camp that could have prevented this from happening.

This just seems like a broken record every year with Matthews. If Neal, Perry and Mulumba continue to improve I am almost at the point of saying we make a Herschel Walker type trade with Matthews and get guys that can actually stay on the field. It's always one thing or another with Matthews and I for one am growing tired of his injuries.

I haven't watched the tape yet, but did anybody ever think that Matthews may be targeted? He is an awesome talent, and a valuable guy for the opposition to get off the field. Or, his injuries just may be happening so often because he gives 100 percent all of the time.

Yes, the double secret "anti broken thumb" exercises. I think they were featured in the table tennis epic film Balls of Fury.

Safety Morgan Burnett broke his thumb in 2011 and played with a cast without missing time with the injury. However, Burnett’s fracture did not require surgery to repair.
