Report: Bryan Bulaga's New Contract Heavy on Roster Bonuses

Details of Bryan Bulaga's newly-signed contract with the Green Bay Packers emerged on Wednesday.

A large chunk of Bulaga's salary will be earned through roster bonuses, as reported by Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com:

As much as $3 million of that total will have to be earned by playing in each game. Given Bulaga's injury history -- he missed all of the 2013 season and half of 2012 -- it provides the Packers with some insurance.

Bulaga received an $8 million signing bonus, which was the only guaranteed money in the deal. The average per year of $6.75 million made Bulaga the 24th-highest paid tackle in the league, according to ESPN Stats & Information salary data. That includes both left tackles and right tackles. It also matches left guard Josh Sitton's average per year, making them the team's two highest-paid offensive linemen.

Bulaga also has a roster bonus of $2.25 million due on the third day of the league year in 2016.

The Packers are currently about $22 million under the 2015 salary cap after counting the recently executed contracts of Bulaga, Randall Cobb, Scott Tolzien, Don Barclay and Sean Richardson.

Bulaga got more than the Packers reportedly wanted to give him. But the Packers did manage to get the higher pay level structured in a manner friendly to them.

All in all, it seems like a perfect example of a fair deal. Neither side got everything they wanted but they did manage to find enough common ground to get the deal both sides wanted.

How much cap room will they need to sign rookies?

It appears to me that Bulaga gave in more here then Thompson. I am guessing the amount of guaranteed $ and structure is not what the Bulaga camp initially had in mind at all. Thompson sweetened it a bit with over-all money but really protected the Packers against injury on a player that often is injured.

Wow. This contract just keeps looking more and more team friendly. Acme says roster bonus totals $2.8 with
$2.25 million roster bonus due on the 3rd day of the new league year in 2016, rest is game day active prorations. In addition, there are roster bonuses in 2017, 2018 and 2019 for $600k, $650K, $700K, all earned for each game played, plus $250k work out bonuses in each year. That's another $5.7 million dollars that Bulaga might not ever see. I hope he earns every nickel of the $33.675 million dollar contract, though. Very team friendly. 23.7% guaranteed.
