Quarterback Nick Hill Released by the Packers

Quarterback Nick Hill has been released by the Green Bay Packers, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The news of Hill's release comes only one day after the first practice open to the public and the media in 2012 as the Packers began Organized Team Activities this week.

Hill was signed by the Packers after their season ended in January. He last played in the Arena Football League where he led the AFL in passing yards for the Orlando Predators in 2011.

Brought in to potentially fill the void left by Matt Flynn when the writing was on the wall that Aaron Rodgers' backup of the past four seasons would leave via free agency, Hill found himself in a battle to earn a roster spot.

Since signing Hill, Flynn inked a deal with the Seattle Seahawks and the Packers later selected quarterback B.J. Coleman of Tennessee-Chattanooga in the seventh round of the NFL Draft.

Also in the battle to win the No. 2 quarterback job in Green Bay is last year's third-stringer, Graham Harrell who has spent time on both the 53-man roster and the practice squad in each of the past two seasons.

In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Tuesday, Harrell said he's added both 14 pounds of weight and arm strength this offseason, perhaps influencing the decision of the Packers to part ways with Hill.

Hill's release opens up a spot on the team's offseason 90-man roster, which the Packers had previously maxed to the limit. Whether this indicates the Packers are interested in bringing in another quarterback or perhaps signing a free agent like running back Ryan Grant is up for debate.

More reps for Harrell & Coleman is a good thing.

Didnt McCarthy say a week or two ago that four QBs is too many? Can't have a battle for the 3rd QB spot?

Harrell better work out or the J. JOnes for Colt McCoy trade will look pretty good.

McCoy isn't a premier quarterback, but he's a winner. In my mind, its obvious that in the NFL, coaching makes all the difference. David Carr is another example. Start with players that "want it"; add coaching; and watch them blossom. Flynn may never make a Pro Bowl, he's done fine for a 7th rounder. McCoy could do even better.
