QB Colt McCoy Traded to...San Francisco

The Cleveland Browns agreed Monday to deal QB Colt McCoy to the San Francisco 49ers, ending any chance of McCoy ending up in Green Bay.

In the lead up to last year's NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers were rumored to be interested in swinging a deal for Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy.

No such rumors will fill the airwaves in 2013.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Browns agreed Monday to send McCoy and a sixth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for both a fifth- and seventh-round pick.

McCoy was a hot name in Green Bay for a stretch last April.

After the Packers lost Matt Flynn (who, ironically, was also traded today) in free agency, Bill Huber of the Packer Report was told that Green Bay was "considering" a move for McCoy. ESPN's Chris Mortensen later reported that a "very good" source within the Packers organization told him no such deal was ever in the works.

Nevertheless, the McCoy-to-Green-Bay talk should now be officially dead. The former Texas star will head to San Francisco, where the 49ers needed a backup after dealing away Alex Smith.

Would have been a nice backup for Rodgers.

Yes, Ted Thompson has always been one to trade away draft picks for backups.

We're screwed and now, when Kaepernick gets injured, the 49ers will still win the SB.

Kinda though Kaepernick's primary back-up would be a read option guy like Pat White. Little surprised they went this route.

A CLE 6th round is roughly equal to SF 5th round; so McCoy for the equivalent of Mr. Irrelevant seems to be a low price. TT must be happy with Harrell and Coleman.

49ers do no wrong...clearly this is a brilliant move by Harbaugh et al and constitutive of the inevitable juggernaut that they will unleash on the NFL in perpetuity from now until judgment day, while TT and GB languishes in increasing obscurity.

I will, with the knowledge that if Ted had made this trade, you would have trashed it.

you're right.
the packers don't need mccoy.

"laugh now" was directed towards the commenters who continue to down-play kprnk and the 49'ers.

We weren't downplaying the 9ers. We know they're a very good team. We were enjoying this at your expense!

You don't necessarily get better in the offseason by signing FA and making moves. The Iggles found that out the hard way!

Is Vince Young that bad or that big of a jerk? You'd think SF would like the idea of a similar trait qb as backup.

Also saw D. Hayward-Bey signed in Indy for 3M. That's too much for TT, but I would have thought it to be cool to put such a speedster as GB's #4 WR.

What purpose would DHB serve? He has poor hands, runs poor routes. His only redeeming trait is straight ahead speed. But he doesn't get in/out of breaks very well, so he can't get open. Packers already are facing 2 deep safeties ALL the time. They need to pull one of the safeties closer to the box, so they can get open deep again. That'll only happen when they're able to run the ball effectively. He doesn't fit the Packer WR traits in any way! He is just one of the many Oak busts of the last decade!

1. He's faster than anyone in GB now. Stretch the D?

2. Every WR is better with AR.

The D is already stretched by keeping the safeties deep. It aint gonna open the passing game more. Gotta pull the safeties closer so you can get over the top. Speed is great, but we had no trouble getting deep in '11 did we? Only way to get that back is to run the ball and pull the safeties in. This is football 101 kind of stuff.

Rodgers can put the ball right in DHB's hands, he can't catch it for him tho!

Can you say Ted Ginn Jr. ? I agree, he would be a poor fit in Green Bay and in addition to the valid points listed the Packer receivers per Edgar Bennett must block, he does not fit that criteria either.

McCoy would have been a solid addition to back up Rodgers, he is young and has started in the NFL and has decent tools. Graham Harrell is a Caleb Haney/Joe Webb experience just waiting to happen.
