Practice Report: Eddie Lacy Makes Strides

The Packers rookie running back reportedly practiced on a Thursday for the first time since early December.

From Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com:

Lacy has apparently sprained and aggravated his ankle in four consecutive games dating back to matchup Dec. 8 against the Atlanta Falcons.

But somehow he fights through the pain and continues to play at a high level, such as he did this past Sunday, rushing for 66 yards and a touchdown. Perhaps practicing on a Thursday indicates that Lacy is making progress and starting to put his ankle issues behind him.

He'll be looking to be as close to 100 percent as possible as the Packers prepare to take on the San Francisco 49ers in the wildcard round of the playoffs Sunday at Lambeau Field.

According to the beat reporters attending practice, the only player not practicing is linebacker Clay Matthews, who has already been ruled out of Sunday's game with a broken thumb. However, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel also reports that fellow linebacker Victor Aiyewa was also not practicing.

Linebacker Brad Jones was reportedly practicing in full after being listed as a limited participant on Wednesday.

I'm hoping for more than one; we're going to need him to be a major factor.

Since nothing else seems to be cooking on this board:

How much does Green Bay have left on its cap this year and is there any way they can free up more cap room over the next few years by accelerating payments on some of the more expensive contracts rather than trying to sign most of their free agents (except Daniels, which need to get done, okay?)

If anyone is looking at college video, imagine Eric Ebron and Jace Amaro with the existing cast (Sorry Ha Ha and Nix) and using a little free agent money (a guy can dream can't he) on a known entity to help Clay rush the passer.

You want TWO new tight ends? Or one of those two?

I'd be happy with Quarless and a 2nd/3rd rounder TE next year. Packers need serious D help.

I just saw on one (of about a bazillion) draft site that there are about NINE safeties with 2nd-3rd round grades.

Just gimme the ONE that pans out!

Lately, they've put a lot of emphasis on drafting defense without a whole lot to show for it. I'd be happy with the best player available.

Fair point.

Maybe they need to keep at it till they hit on some studs?

I still think safety is the #1 need, but from what I'm reading there might not be a surefire first round guy this year.

From Peter King:

"Rookie running back Eddie Lacy, a Louisianan by way of Alabama, is playing with a bad ankle already, and he told me this week he had to leave the game in Chicago last Sunday briefly because his hand got numb and he feared not being able to feel the ball; well, it’ll be about 20 degrees colder this weekend."

Eesh.

Yeah but I heard the Packers are giving everyone at the game free hand warmers, so I assume that includes Eddie. Problem solved!

Here's hoping.

I don't think I've ever had one of those hard warmer packs that's actually worked.

A case could be made for afterburning turbojet sideline warmers considering the near record breaking cold & wind chills forecast.

Last winter I was on a flight deck with weather in the teens and 20 knots of wind. Despite the choking fumes that come from jet engines, we couldn't wait for those babies to get cookin' up there each day.

All in all, I hope we can get at least the same defensive effort we got last week. We stopped a Pretty Good offense with 3 really good receivers, & a pretty damn good running back. If we can improve any on that, it'll be a Big Plus. Go Pack

100% correct. The only caveat is that Kap is no Cutler. I think he is smarter with the ball, and no one can deny his scrambling threat. I think the game comes down to his performance.

We can't let him run wild, that's for sure. Not sure we'll get to him, so we'll have to keep him contained. Did you read my earlier post?

The coldest game Kap has played in was 20 degrees, & that was at Nevada.

No player on SF has played in a game below 34 degrees.

The coldest game SF has played in since 2001, was 26 degrees.

SF is 3-9 since 2000 under 40 degrees.

Jim Harbaugh has sited recent wins over the Pats, at 34 degrees, & over Philly at 35 degrees.

You would think we could take advantage of those numbers.

We are 3-4 in the last 7 Playoff games at Lambo. Prior to that, we were 13-0.
So I guess you can say we are 16-4 in our last 20 home playoff games.

GB has a lot in their favor for this game. I hope the experts keep picking SF. I would think the weather has to be a Huge advantage in our favor, based on SF's history. JMO

P.S. Maybe the Most Important player we need tomorrow is Crosby. Favre took all the bullets for that Championship game, but if Crosby makes the FG we win. He's had a Great year. We need him to be Dead On tomorrow.

I've heard a lot of talk about matchups on Offense/Defense but one real concern I have is in regards to the Packers ability to cover KO/PR on Special Teams.

Would love to see Slocum use Masthay to kick it through the end zone. MM has said they like Crosby's ability to directional kick, etc., but for me that's just getting too cute and risky.

You simply don't understand. WHen its cold its impossible to simply kick it out of the endzone. That's why later in the year, starting in Nov, Crosby has been doing kickoffs, since he can do directional kicking while Masthay can't. THe ball simply doesn't fly as far in cold weather. If its 0 degrees I doubt Masthay would even be able to get the ball to the goal line.

Stroh, Any thoughts on the coin toss tomorrow, should we win. Normally I'd be for deferring, but I think we should keep SF off the field as much as possible from the get go.

If we win the coin flip I would take the ball and hope to jump out to an early lead while SF is still getting accustomed to being in the frigid cold. Its gonna be a shock to the system when they walk onto the field. Get an early 7-0 lead, hope their offense is cold by the time they get on the field get a 3 and out and score again.

That would obviously be the best case scenario.

Gould didn't seem to have any issues kicking it to the back of the endzone last week.

I like Crosby for the surprise onside kick.

And I'm always in favor of deferring - go for the double dip.

You're right about Gould. I'd love to see every KO out of the end zone. Might be impossible in zero temps, but got to think Masthay could have doing it some recently.

Lacy has been exactly what I hoped he'd become, when the Packers drafted him.

Did anybody watch the Alabama/Oklahoma bowl game on Thursday? 'Bama has a rookie RB named Henry who looks like another Lacy.
