Plenty of Talent Remains For the Packers

Green Bay doesn't have to trade up to find talent at positions of need.

Now that you're thawed out from the numbness that seemed to spread throughout Packers fandom after the Damarious Randall selection, let's take a look at what might lay in store for Ted Thompson and company on Day Two of the 2015 NFL Draft.

I've had a bunch of people on Twitter asking me if I think the Packers will trade up in the second round to grab one of the remaning inside linebackers that many people thought might be their target in the first round.

I really tend to doubt that's the plan. As Eric Stoner said on the podcast a few weeks ago, the inside linebacker prospects this year are all so close together talent-wise (no one really is head and shoulders above the rest) you can wait on the group to fall, let someone else start the run and take the last one standing. Obviously, if there's a guy they love, like say Denzel Perryman, and they see him falling but are afraid another team with needs at linebacker might grab him, they could trade up. (Don't laugh. For all the guff Ted takes about never trading up, he does actually utilize the tactic from time to time...)

Of course, the 2nd round could come and go and the Packers could select another position entirely. Defensive line could get the call, or edge rusher. But I do tend to think at least one if not both of the Packers' picks today will address the defensive front seven.

Now watch Ted take a wide receiver...

Here are a few guys who might fall into the Packers' lap today:

Jordan Phillips, DT Oklahoma

Denzel Perryman, ILB Miami

Paul Dawson, ILB TCU

Benardrick McKinney, ILB Mississippi St

Carl Davis, DT Iowa

Just a few examples of guys who could end the day in Green and Gold. But knowing Ted, he'll end up taking some Division II standout that leaves us all scrambling to find out who the hell the newest member of the Green and Gold is.

Just remember, plenty of talent is still out there and plenty of it will be coming to Green Bay by the time the draft is done.

Magic 8 ball says, at least two of those guys will be there, we will all be excitedly wondering which one they'll pick, and Ted will pass again.

The more I read about Damarious Randall the better I feel about the pick. Looks like a highly athletic guy that can play anywhere in the secondary and might not be close to his ceiling yet.

I'd be fine with any of those ILBs in the 2nd. Also digging the Randall pick more and more.

I love it that nobody saw that pick coming, yet upon further review it makes a lot of sense. Barrington is a 6th rnd pick (I think), and they let go Jones, Hawk, and Lattimore. i agree with you Aaron that there will be a lot of new, exciting talent coming to GB. Thompson is pretty good at this and I believe they really are looking for good football players wherever they are. They are a lot more thorough than any draft analyst could ever hope to be. Those guys are mostly entertainers. So let's sit back and enjoy being surprised by Ted's next move. I'm about 80% over the pain of last season and getting ready for another Packers run at the Lombardi trophy.

No doubt that rounds 2 & 3 need to be all about the defensive front 7. --- Just hope TT is thinking 2015 and not 2017 or 2018. At some point a GM needs to focus on the present .

I just want to remind TT of the obvious - after this year, our draft needs will probably be much bigger. Sometimes, there is no 'next year' to build for.

I hope nobody in organization is saying they are over the pain of last year. That should remain with everybody for motivation. "SB or bust" is this years motto.

I just want one of the top 'instincts' ILBs. That means Perryman, Dawson or Kendricks. They all have top drawer instincts. Don't really want McKinney. I would also like Jake Ryan at the end of round four. He is listed as an OLB but can do both.....not as good as the first three I mentioned, but a good backup plan.

What makes me encouraged about Randall is his proven ability to lean a new position. As he arrived at his second Junior College, he had only a background of high school training in how to play corner back. In a very short time, he learned corner back, safety and wide receiver well enough to excel at the Juco level. When he arrived at t ASU, they taught him safety as played in their unique attacking defense. He did that well enough to be all conference. Now his task his to learn how to be an NFL corner back. He has the body type and athleticism, and his history suggests that he will figure out how to do it at a high level.

Plus, Whitt has done wonders with far less established talent. Great coach plus willingness and ability to learn, that gives me a lot of hope too.

Let's remember that just because we may not know that much about a draft choice does not mean is a bad pick. That's why they have a scouting department. Based on his track record I feel confident that Thompson will come up with a few gems. In my opinion TT does better with picks in the later rounds than he does in the first round.

All this being said .....damn I wish we snagged Rollins. Not that he's gone yet but obviously we are going to address DL TE and MLB before another CB.

Will you officially be a member of the draft team next year - they clearly value your insight. ;-)

I think there is an important element missed in this article. If the Packers want to get a Day 1 starter, it's not as simple as sitting there and taking whoever is left. LB's are all very different with very different skill sets. There are going to be preferences. If the Packers want to make sure they get a guy that is a good scheme fit, they should trade up and get their guy. If they are okay with a combo of Barrington and Bradford (or possibly one of the other ILB's such as Joe Thomas), then they can sit and wait and hope their guy falls to them, and if they are all gone or the wrong guy falls, take another position like you said.

The good news is that there are a lot of ILB names around the 2nd round this year. The bad news is that most are projected to go before us and one is already gone (Stephone Anthony). I hope TT nails this pick because he didn't exactly nail the 1st one IMO.

You've clearly got the inside line (though not inside linebacker) on things:

"But knowing Ted, he'll end up taking some Division II standout that leaves us all scrambling to find out who the hell the newest member of the Green and Gold is."

"Now watch Ted take a wide receiver..."

No, this is Ted.

Bingo! Now we're learning!
