I'm impressed with the positive responses I've read. There's so much to be proud of. However...

-another close loss with another haunting array of what ifs and, again, a game shifting special teams gaff.

Upshot: trust your team and do what you practice and you might have success. Get fancy out-thinking (squibkick) out of fear, and you probably lose.

Next loss will do it.

Up next: Giants, Bears, and if then, the good news, most likely the Saints.

I'll be there rooting, cringing and getting older with each down.

Nah, it won't be the Saints. They have the 5-seed locked up, barring an Atlanta collapse.

As it stands right now, if we win our last two, it'll be @Chicago in the Wild Card round. Couldn't be more perfect.

As of 12/20, if the Bears win tonight, they'll hold the tie-breaker over the Eagles to give them the the 2 seed. The Packers would have to go back to Philly for the WC game (N.O. would go to St. Louis.)

Yes, but for the Packers to make the playoffs, they would have to beat the Bears in week 17, giving the 2nd seed back to the Eagles. If the saints lose to the falcons and bucs to give a four-way tie for the packers, bucs, giants, and saints at 10-6, the packers would have the 5th seed and giants would get the 6th seed.

Squib was the right call at that time. Only Slocum could have a cover team on the field that couldn't tackle a 313 lb. lineman.

Get rid of that azzhat now!

But, yeah, he should not keep his job due to weekly missteps. Last night's play was just the icing on the cake.

As usual, Capers gets more from his players than their talent level would indicate. Guys like Bush have gone from the most hated and mistake riddled players, to effective members of the team, albeit in a backup capacity. Peprah, Shields, Bishop, they all play above their ability as part of a team that is greater than the sum of it's parts.
Not so with McCarthy's and Slocum's units. And it's a grotesquerie, given the talent with which TT has stocked this team.
Oh yeah, why was Starks inactive? Because he's not as good as Kuhn?

That raises an interesting question: why **isn't** MCCarthy getting more out of Nance?

For fuck's sake, I'm not in love with McCarthy, but the dude put up 27 points on the road without his top QB, his top RB, and in my opinion, his top receiver. I don't know what you expect.

it was a typical james jones game- he can be great on one play and then look like someone who has never played football on the next. i don't get him. flynn was excellent today. i'll give him a break on the pick since it's his first start in the nfl. the game plan overall was very good too. kuhn really stepped it up big time as did bj raji. man- he had a lights out game! hopefully we can kick the shit out of the NYG next week and knock em out of contention.

I'll give him a break on the pick, because it's more the result of Jones giving up on the play than it is on Flynn. Although I suppose Flynn should know better than to throw to Jones.
I've been supportive of Jones, but I think after today, I've had enough. Bishop showed he can get it together with more reps, but that doesn't seem to be happening with JJ. He can walk this offseason.

...also, Jones plays "small". He's nearly a TE size-wise but rarely uses his power as he could.

And Quarless (albeit he's a rookie) isn't very sure-handed, either. But he must be better than Donald Lee, who hasn't sniffed the field in weeks...

I'm glad to hear I'm not alone, regarding James Jones.

He doesn't seem to put in the effort of other receivers -- he would not have scored on that Driver TD vs. SF.

JJ can't play DB, if the pass isn't perfect.

JJ doesn't fight for extra yards, instead he goes out of bounds to readily.

JJ doesn't ever sell out for the ball -- one (almost perfect) pass before the half during SF game, he just cupped his hands hoping it would drop. He could have stretched and caught that ball -- look at our other receivers, they do it.

I'm of the opinion that if he continued his route last night, it would have been pass interference -- no matter against whom, there would not have been an interception.

It's almost like he doesn't want to be in Green Bay, and wants to be let go.

Q: Does he still speak in 3rd person during interviews ? cuz' PkrNboro likes that shit about as much as 4pt losses...

John Kuhn was a beast tonight and i thought quinn johnson had a good game too. That attempt at a tackle peprah made was dissmall and james jones is just so soft he has to go. that dropped intercept from woodson was a shame. I think matt flynn shut alot of people up tonight and may get us a good draft pick in a year or two. All in all was a good game, i was on the edge of my seat the whole 60 minutes.

Where's PackersRS or whatever and all the haters? Figures. Heart is the definition of our season with all the setbacks we've had. Unless I'm mistaken, win out from now and we're in. What a great effort from almost the entire team. BUT, since we're a team and sink or swim together, as a team we came close. I'm so proud of those boys. It's games like this, when so many count us out before we start, that make me proud to be a Packer fan. Very proud. At full health, we can take on ANYBODY. At half strenght, I'll STILL put us against anybody. At THIS point? And we fought New England to the last minute? man...GO PACK, GO!

I am not a hater, but I will still comment on your post:
The Packers didn't win it though. They caught a break with the Giants and Bucs losing, but it doesn't matter much if you lose a close game or get blown out, it is still a loss. Stats are for losers ....
Kickoff coverage should be in the Bad.

And Capers still does not get it that rushing three will not get any good result. Every time I see the Packers drop 8 into coverage I can bet big pass play will happen, usually for a first down or even TD.
Jordy Nelson and James Jones played poor game throughout, with the exception of the TD catch and run. I thought at the beginning of the season the Pack had the best WR squad in the league, but sadly this is not the case anymore.

I agree about Capers. There were several 3rd downs with a 3 man rush that ended up in big gains for the Pats. You have to play your strengths and our pass rush is better than our DB's. 3 or 4 missed picks and completing one, I'm assuming would have gave us a win.

Absolutely. Football is entertainment, and that was a tremendous show last night. Up until the last 60 seconds, it was probably the most engaging and plain old fun game of the season. Dom Capers needs to be put in the "Good" category. I counted 2 drives, maybe a 3rd where Tom Brady dictated to the Packers defense. Otherwise, the defense dictated that game. Great game plan by Capers pressuring Brady to move him off the spot. Sadly, once again, special teams and McCarthy's play calling in critical situations hurt this team.

I'm so happy with the overall effort. Matt Flynn was extrememly impressive. I mean, man...it was his first NFL start. Very proud of everybody.

The only disappointing thing is that, once again, my personal bad highlights are a crappy special teams play and McCarthy's goal line play calling.

I can't rip Charles Woodson. Where was Wes Welker last night? Nobody in the league EVER contains that guy. But we did. I vote for Dom to be in the good. He did come up with an awesome defensive gameplan. I mean, the D didn't give up that INT return, and the D didn't let a kickoff come back to our own 4.

I agree, the run calls are perplexing.

Considering we've got a suspect oLine, McCarthy continues to run it up the gut. Why not a pitch out, and let the runner try to avoid the line altogether?

When I think ZBS, I think of the whole line in motion, before contact with the defense -- then blocks can be executed, and a lane formed. With GB it's a brawl to a standstill at the snap -- no lanes, no holes, runners stopping or bouncing off players. It's almost vaudevillian...

As for the offensive line, Bulaga is taking a beating and thats because he is playing out of position. Thers only 1 reason he is on the field and that is because he was the 1st round pick and making millions. Hopefully this will be a learning year for him and not set him back, as he will be a good linem,an for many years for the Packers...2011: Colledge, GONE!...Spitz, Gone!...Tauscher, Gone!...Look for the 2011 line to look this way, LT Clifton, LG Bulaga, C Wells, RG Sitton, RT Lang with McDonald and Newhouse as backups and possibly just possibly Tausher. Through the first 3 or 4 rounds they will not draft an offensive lineman.

After re-watching the DET game, Lang actually looked pretty good. My only fault was that he didn't stay with his block quite long enough -- although there were several instances when the ball should have come out sooner. We need something stout at guard, opposite Sitton.

Have I heard that McDonald has taken snaps at center ??

I am a MM supporter...but he needs some help at the end of games. His brain doesn't work quickly- all people are different with different strengths.
If you watch the last 20 seconds- someone MM? was telling Flynn to spike it! FOURTH DOWN Flynn flashes back. Now all this is happening after a timeout before the previous play.

KEEP MM- but he needs to be open to some support by committee on the sidelines- there is just too much going on in the NFL today-for one man to make all the decisions, plans, replay challenges..play calling, time outs,....keep track of downs/distance...on and on..

Ted Thompson is the football version of Billy Beane. Always looks great to stock good young players and he never signs good free agents. Julius Peppers would have looked good as a Packer. A good GM makes sure they have depth. It's the NFL..people are going to get hurt. We had no quality RBs on the bench to step up.
we have a short window of opportunity with a premier QB to win. Let's not waste time with McFarty and go out and get Cowher or Gruden. We deserve a winner and deserve a better HC than Clueless Mike who should be coaching boys middle school flag football.

Again, the special teams failed us. The Flynn interception hurt. However, despite these two errors, the Packers had a chance to win and again, the play calling of Mike McCarthy continues to plague this team. While the lumbering kick return of one Dan Connelly was an embarrassment and clearly a result of poor coaching (no lane discipline, no “press and fold” by Peprah and others…..this isn’t being repped well enough. Heck, my 10 year old son’s team knows this basic of football fundamentals…pursuit with regard to the ball….PRESS and FOLD…….why isn’t Slocum gone yet?), there were two critical situations in which Mike McCarthy, once again, failed to rise to the challenge. The first occasion was the goal line situation in which we got only 3 points. First, let’s look at the personnel and play call. On 1st down, McCarthy goes with 23 Personnel (Crabtree, Quarless, Lee, Kuhn, Jackson). From the 2 yd. line, McCarthy calls a FB Belly with Kuhn. Kuhn gets it to the half yd. line. The Pats were line up in a 6 man front playing head up across the board. Good call for the situation and to come off the ball. I had no problem with that call. However, McCarthy chose to run the same play with the same personnel only this time he had Lee lined up at a wing or “hip” position off of Crabtree on the right side. The previous play he had Lee flexed out a little. The Patriots went to a “gap” front, covering gaps A thru C on both sides of the ball. On the front side of the play Crab tree washed down the C gap player. Lee got a seal on the player aligned outside of him. The problem was that the FB Belly call in this situation was never going to work. The situation ended up being a 2 on 1 advantage for the Pats. McCourty came untouched between Lee and the block of Crabtree. If Kuhn would have managed to get by McCourty, Mayo was scraping over the top and would’ve made the tackle as well. From a simple numbers game, the Packers were outmatched. If he wanted to run the ball, McCarthy would have been better served giving it to Jackson and using Kuhn as a lead blocker on McCourty. This would have given a 1 on 1 situation between Mayo scrapping and Jackson either hitting the seam between a leading Kuhn and Lee or an opportunity to bounce the play wide. Either way, with this scenario, the Packers would have had a better chance getting in to the end zone. I suggest that the ideal call using the same personnel would have been a playaction pass using Crabtree on a “bang arrow to the flat, Lee to the corner and Jackson to the intermediate flat or curl area to give Flynn a triangle read as he rolled out. Very similar to what McCarthy tried to do on 3rd down when he tried to run rubs and picks against a zone coverage. Rubs and picks don’t work against zones. Additionally, not going for it on 4th down in that situation was a mistake. In the event they would’ve turned the ball over on downs, you’ve set your defense with good field position. That’s the strength of this team. I would’ve liked that situation. Again, I think this highlights the lack of a killer instinct in McCarthy when he has an advantage in field position at critical moments of the game.
The second critical situation was at the 10:59 mark of the 4th quarter. The Packers were up 27-24 after having just traded field goals with the Patriots. Starting on their own 21, McCarthy came out in 11 personnel (Driver, Jennings, Nelson, Quarles and Jackson). On 1st and 10, ball on the right hash, McCarthy decides to go play action and use a 7 man protection, keeping Quarless and Jackson in to block. The Patriots send McCourty from the boundary. Jackson initially picks him up but he stops his movement upfield and comes back under to get the sack of Flynn as he stepped up in the pocket. Here is the big problem. Nelson, who was at the Z, ran a go up the sideline. Jennings, who was at the opposite flanker position in a 2 x 2 set, ran a 15 yard dig route. Driver, who was at the X in a compressed alignment on the same side of Jennings, left side of the formation, ran a deep crossing route that broke at 12 yards and climbed to 15. The Patriots had the right call on for the route concept. A boundary corner 5 man pressure with a roll coverage to the boundary. It appeared to be a fire zone without a dropping defensive lineman. There was a 3 under 3 over shell. The problem I have with this call is the call itself. Prior to this, Flynn was able to get in to a rhythm with the mix of runs and high percentage WCO type concept passing structure. This completely went against all that they had accomplished through the first 3 quarters of play. Again, another critical situation in which McCarthy went with a low percentage success, high risk play. Back to his old vertical game….once again. I would have preferred a run or pass that moved the pocket or was part of the quick game or screen game. As it was, the play resulted in a 4 yard loss and put us in 2nd and 14. The 2nd down play to Jackson was a good decision by Flynn. Jennings ran a shallow under from the same formation and Driver ran a 15 yd. dig. Nelson ran a 10 yd. stop. Quarless ran a go in the vertical seam. Jackson snuck out to the voided hole area. If he could’ve caught the ball in stride he could have picked up half of the yardage to put us at 3rd and 7 rather than 3rd and 14. On 3rd and 14, from a 2 x 2 formation, Jennings ran a sluggo seam from the left side of the formation in compressed alignment. The two flankers ran pivot outs/comebacks at 15. Jordy Nelson ran a check release route from the right slot position, just off of Bulaga’s hip. He ran a shallow under and stopped. Jennings had cleared the seam area. Had Nelson kept running laterally and Flynn hit him, we would have had a shot to pick it up. Nelson had a 7 yd. cushion from Mayo who was the closest defender. This series broke down from the first play call. A nice high percentage play would have been nice.
These two series were critical in the outcome of this game. I’ve said for quite sometime that McCarthy is not a good play caller. I believe he uses some good personnel groupings BUT I don’t believe he uses them correctly for the given situation. As a head coach you need to manage the game. That is your biggest job. Understanding the people you have on the field, the success you are having with a certain approach, and the critical nature of field position, quarter and the clock are paramount to having team success. If it hasn’t been clear by now, hopefully these two situations give some perspective to his abilities to manage the entire game. He understood his team’s own abilities and strengths for 3 quarters but at the beginning of the 4th and 10:59 in the 4th, he lost sight of that. That is where, I argue, this game was lost. Yes, Slocum should’ve been gone eons ago. Yes, Campen is too inconsistent. Heck, I’d argue that we need to get rid of Jimmy Robinson as well. Sit down in the window vs. zone unless you are running a guy off. Run away from man coverage. Things our receivers seem to be inconsistent at. There are lots of issues here folks but they all point to one man and that man is McCarthy. Whether it’s game management, play-calling, system, staffing decisions etc. etc, etc……”the buck stops” with McCarthy.

Okay...maybe the Robinson comment was over the top. Chalk it up to frustration. By the way...is it possible to put diagrams in here? I'd love to post these things for the viewers instead of writing a long diatribe.

Find yourself a blog. Seriously.

I would read it if you kept posting stuff like this, but with all the formatting that makes it readable.

Great post. Really, really great. I think McCarthy might be a better all-around head coach if he relinquished play-calling duties. If he did, I think he would have better feel for what's happening in-game. That's his biggest weakness, IMO.

I would not advocate going for it on that 4th down, though. I am not a big fan of going for it on 4th down on the road in general.

We were #2 last season in drops.
I don't know the standings this year, but we're damn near the top.

You blame those on personel, not on coaching?

Chris Collinsworth can go on the Ugly. It took him three times before he saw the clear as day helmet to helmet on Quarless. When Flynn stood in the pocket and delivered a pass he was "poised." When he took a sack he was "taking too long to get rid of the ball."

On one sequence, he talked about how the game isn't too big for Flynn since he played in the National Championship game - "Heck bring on the Patriots, that's fine." LITERALLY two plays later when he threw the ball out of bounds on third and goal..."The game is giving him happy feet. IT's a little too big for him here in the 1st quarter." Seriously? Are you listening to yourself?

Really, did he??

"Wilfork really had no choice, Wells had his arm draped around him." Ummm...first of all, his arm wasn't "draped around him", it was in his chest. Second, that's a block. Third, when is ANYONE ever "forced" to facemask? Ugh...

According to McCarthy "we came to win." Also, "we're nobody's underdog." Well, here it is folks. With the playoffs on the doorstep and everything in our control, McCarthy has a chance to save his job. Now we'll get to see just how good of a coach he is. Demeanor of the team, game plans going in, etc. etc. etc. all on display in this next game. Believe me folks, this ain't going to be a cake walk. New York is going to be ready. They're fighting for their playoff lives as well. Is McCarthy the guy to lead this organization to a Super Bowl someday. Well, if you need any evidence, this Sunday will be the litmus test. It doesn't get any bigger than this game. Judging by past events, I'm not too confident....but we'll see.

The Giants are an unpredictable beast, coming off that disaster yesterday. I could see them coming out like gangbusters, and I could also see them falling apart if we can get an early score or turnover or two.

Personally, I'm rooting for them to fall apart a la Dallas so Coughlin can be the third coach we get fired this year. Then, as I'm dreaming, the Bears lose out and Lovie becomes #4 after crush them on January 2nd. It's all so easy...

JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THE PACKERS AND THERE USE OF PERSONNEL. IF YOU WATCH THE GAMES AND SEE WHO IS ON THE FIELD WHEN THEY HAVE OFFENSIVE SUCCESS, YOU WILL FIND KUHN IN THE MIX ALOT. YET, THEY CONTINUE TO SUBSTITUTE AT THAT POSITION. SEEMS LIKE HE IS IN SHAPE, NOT INJURED, YET ONLY PLAYS MINIMAL DOWNS. JUST DON;T GET IT

I nearly started crying. Literally.

Then I read the article and they're talking about Brandon Jennings of the Bucks. There is a God!

For a game that was called right for most of the night...horrible call to use your 2nd timeout after getting the first down. Runs on 1st down had been productive most of the night, and if I'm correct, it was against a 3-front when they used it. Had they not, outcome at the end would have been much different.

But shame on Bulaga to block worng right after a timeout.

5 losses by 4 or fewer points.

I've never had more fun yelling "KUUUUHHHHNNN" at the TV than yesterday. He was really amazing. Matt, too, exceeded expectations.

VERY displeased with MM at the end of the game, until then I thought he outdid himself.

Shawn Slocum....augh.

You need a "Butt Ugly" category. Just copy-paste Slocum's name in there after each game.
