- The Offical “We Love Greg Jennings Thread”
Re-watching the Saints game late last night (yes, I’m a sucker for punishment) I was shocked at how well Al Harris played. This was a game I thought for sure we would see Sean Payton and Drew Brees expose Harris’ lack of speed. But Brees wanted nothing to do with throwing at Harris, and you could see why. The guy was all over and never gave up. He was still playing his ass off long after the game was decided. And you simply can not say enough about his effort on the 70 yard Lance Moore TD.
Between coming back after the lacerated spleen and the unbeliavable job he’s done in coverage since he’s been back, I do believe I owe Mr. Harris an apology. He is simply a warrior.
So the powers that be in Georgia allowed Michael Vick to plead guilty to State dog fighting charges. He is now slated for release on July 20th 2009 from the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas which should give him more than enough time to find a team to train with (see Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys) in time for the 2009 NFL training camp and subsequent season.
All that will stop Michael Vick from playing in the NFL next year is the Commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell, our favorite player meddler and cheating cover-up specialist. Back when this all came out Mr. Goodell wrote a letter to Mr. Vick and I quote:
“Your admitted conduct is not only illegal, but also cruel and reprehensible…Even if you personally did not place bets, as you contend, your actions in funding the betting and your association with illegal gambling both violate the terms of your N.F.L. player contract and expose you to corrupting influences in derogation of one of the most fundamental responsibilities of an N.F.L. player.”
You can download and read the letter here.
So why does this matter to Packer fans? Especially when we have a currently indicted (but not yet convicted) on felony charges player of our own. The answer is it doesn’t, not directly anyway..the Packers would never hire him as it would tarnish irrevocably the image of one the greatest sports franchises this country has ever seen. Which is the very reason it should matter to Roger Goodell. I personally shudder when I think of Vick in an NFL uniform. This was a man who orchestrated, funded and profited from organized crime. A man who killed, mutilated and maimed dozens of innocent animals under his care all while profiting on their misery & suffering.
A 17-page report filed Aug. 28, 2008, by case agent James Knorr of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and released Friday November 21, 2008 under the Freedom of Information Act adds even more unbelievable atrocities and lies to the Vick “Bad Newz Kennels” story. (You can read the entire report at The Smoking Gun)
Here is a summary of some of the most egregious things in the report:
Pro Football Talk makes a good point about the fact that Michael Vick has not been convicted of actually killing dogs, an obvious “miscarriage of justice”.
According to the Sporting News (which also states it’s a question of when and not if the NFL will reinstate Vick) here is a quote from Roger Goodell about whether he intends to reinstate Vick.
“The good news is I don’t have to make that decision right now,” Goodell said in an interview at his New York office. “He hasn’t finished serving his time, and the legal process isn’t completed, and I said he was suspended until that process was completed. And at that point I will make a decision on his ability to play in the NFL.”
For the sake of the National Football League please Mr. Goodell - Just say NO.
McCarthy, when pressed by several reporters on whether Derrick Frost should be cut:
I hear you gentleman. I know where you’re coming from. It’s been heard and well-received.
UPDATE: Here’s the video. Love where McCarthy says:
We didn’t punt very well last night, no doubt about it. That is twice now indoors that we didn’t have a good performance. We need to continue to just try to improve from within.
How? Is he auditioning guys on the practice squad? Perhaps Ryan Pickett has a hidden punting talent? Hilarious.
A popular sentiment among coaches after a blowout loss, like the one the Packers experienced last night, is to “burn the tape” - meaning, don’t even bother watching tape of the game because it won’t teach you anything you don’t already know.
McCarthy should burn the tape.
The Packers sailed into a perfect storm last night (That was for you Steve!) Every conceivable weakness they have was matched by every overwhelming strength the Saints have. It was obvious that Bob Sanders simply could not adjust even slightly to what Drew Brees and company were throwing at him. After Rodgers threw his first pick, it was pretty much over. No way were the Packers going to get one stop, much less the three they would need to get back in the game. McCarthy felt as much, which is why he called for an onside kick with over 12 minutes remaining.
This Packers team has now played the two dome games on their schedule, and it’s readily apparent they are in no way built for playing indoors, especially on defense. The glaring lack of speed across the board was shocking last night, where even guys like Tramon Williams and Nick Collins looked like they were moving in mud when compared to the Saints receivers. Throw in the fact that they’re isn’t a competent pass rush outside of Aaron Kampman and you have a recipe for disaster. The hope for the Packers is that their five remaining games are all outdoors, where this team has looked much, much better. The problem is, even if they do make the playoffs, the probability of another playoff loss at Lambeau is quite high.
But I digress. Burn the tape. Forget the trip down to New Orleans ever happened. Tell Bob Sanders he is coaching for his job over the course of these final five games, starting with Sunday’s showdown against the Panthers. This game is the season. Beat the Panthers (and it says here the Packers will) and the Packers continue their Bataan Death March to an 8-8 Divisional Championship. Lose, and it’s time to start paying attention to college football to see if we can spot any future Packers.
