Packers Will Likely Spend Friday Trying to Trade a Tight End

D.J. Williams and Brandon Bostick would seem likely trade targets for an NFL team looking for a tight end.

Now that the final preseason game is over, push has come to shove.

The Packers have seven tight ends on their roster, six of them with a legitimate claim to making the team. But obviously Green Bay isn't going to keep six tight ends.

There's probably room for four tight ends on the Packers roster, maybe five if the chips fall perfectly, but don't count on it.

With a day off until 53-man rosters have to be finalized on Saturday, general manager Ted Thompson can work the phones. He'll do his best to trade a tight end, maybe even two.

There's two players, in particular, that have trade value––third-year veteran D.J. Williams and first-year player Brandon Bostick.

Seeing as there's probably not room for both of them in Green Bay, the Packers would probably love to get something, anything, in return––even if it's a late round draft choice. Otherwise at least one of them will have to be cut.

With injuries happening around the league, there's a need for tight ends.

Out in Miami, where former Packers assistant Joe Philbin is the head coach, there's likely an opening after Dustin Keller suffered a gruesome knee injury in the preseason.

Out in Oakland, where former Packers front office executive Reggie McKenzie is the general manager, there's no clear-cut favorite at the position.

And out in Tampa Bay, former Packers tight end Tom Crabtree was injured last night, leaving the team thin, at least until he gets healthy.

Jermichael Finley is the obvious starter in Green Bay. The Packers also have Andrew Quarless, Matthew Mulligan, Ryan Taylor and Jake Stoneburner at tight end, all of whom would probably be available as well, but they probably aren't as attractive trade targets.

Can't expect much in return, but I think a change of scenery might be necessary for Williams. I assume Stoneburner is the PS assumption; I agree, maybe even Bostick.

What about trading CJ Wilson? Contract year; GB can't re-sign all of them, and it would allow Boyd to learn for a year without exposing to waivers.

This. I've gotta believe Ted's working the phones at more than just the TE position.

I agree. We also have a lot of good DLs: Raji, Pickett, Jones, Daniels, Wilson, Jolly, Miller, Boyd, Neal. Can't keep them all and they've all made some plays.

My favorite irony in all of this commotion about trading a tight end is that the one that no one wants to trade is Jermichael Finley.
Above a perfect case is made for why some teams are desperate for a tight end. And less than a year ago, all of Packerdom wanted him gone. If you told people last October that the Packers were thinking about trading a tight end, they'd be jumping for joy for the possibility of a starting duo of Tom Crabtree and DJ Williams.

"And less than a year ago, all of Packerdom wanted him gone."

Not this guy.

But if anyone goes, I'm hoping it's Williams. I think Bostick has more upside.

I was definitely exaggerating. Finley is my guy. And many others' too.

I think PackerNation has accepted that Finley isn't going anywhere. That, and 4 receiving alternatives are required for ARodg to properly run this offense. Last year, there were WR's that arguable could have that role.

All in all, I give best wishes for those traded or cut from the team in the next days. In the end, we're all human beings and few of us "suck"; we just don't have the comparable attributes of others, regardless of occupation.

others teams injury issues could be a blessing for the pack... a surplus of tight ends could compensate for other needs, now, or in the future. supplementing the tight ends as bait is the entire defense... face it.. the packers are deep in defense this year.
