Packers Vs. Texans: First Impressions

My immediate thoughts on the Packers - Texans game.

...

Preet cool cleats Clay is wearing today. Read about how he came to be involved with #CureDuchenne here.

My wish for every Packers fan would be to experience a game at Lambeau when it's snowing. Truly special.

Phil Simms: "I think Aaron Rodgers pulled out a little too soon."  Phil, Phil, Phil...

James Starks again eschews the inside hole, bounces outside on 3rd and one and loses yardage. Officially tired of this.

McCarthy must have gotten fed up too. Christine Michael gets the call on the next series.

Packers secondary playing with emotion today. Agressive, hitting hard - not their usual passive selves.

I'd venture to say that the majority of Peppers' sacks are coverage sacks. No explosiveness left - has to grind his way to the QB now.

Without the element of Rodgers taking off and running, sustaining drives is a much more difficult task for the Packers.

Best game by the safety duo of Burnett and Clinton-Dix in a long time.

Rather nice change for the Packers to not give up points before the half. However, they just traded spots for "first drive of second half."

The 2nd and 10 handoff when everyone knows it's coming. Mind numbing...

Any player being covered by Micah Hyde is very likely to be open at any given time.

When you're 1-7 on 3rd down, naturally you throw deep on first down and hand the ball off on 2nd.

Ty Montgomery is very likely the Packers best running back. So let's not use him much. I saw Aaron Nagler on twitter call him "a positive play waiting to happen."  yup.

Even Phil Simms chimed in on Montgomerey, "that's one guy that needs to get the ball more."

So much for all the quick-strike passing we saw last week. Maybe field conditions were a factor, but do you really have to abandon completely what worked so well?

The Janis play was setup brilliantly. Run from same formation they've handed off from all game, including twice on that same drive. Kudos to MM for that one.

Nice job by Ripkowski jumping out of the way of that onside kick to let it through to Adams. He's no Bostick...

-Ripkowski brings more than just power. He can cut too, and he's not slow.

-Seemed like the 3rd quarter was another patented MM "lull." !st quarter too.

-The sloppy conditions made this into a JV game, really hard to judge. But the Packers did what it took to WIN.

-Aaron is still passing up the open guy to throw deep. NOT a winning strategy.

Packers O line hasn't been able to dominate in short yardage runs for a long time, they are not built that way and pass pro is more important for this team...........but Torn (Ripkowski) seems to be able to shove that pile with only a little help.

Nice work from Jordy today and from Montgomery.

Defense held well most of the time, especially if you leave out that embarassing Texan run to the ooutside when the strung out GB defense all charged to the inside.

A Janis sighting.....every time I see that guy I marvel at how he can flat out fly.

I can't believe we actually saw that! About time! We have been calling for that type of play for a long time, And guess what, the play worked!

And Janis is probably the best person to run that. He has speed and power.

Great play call.

Despite what DPF says, the fact that they gave him the ball on that toss this week will give defenses something to think about in the future. It changes how the defense reacts. Just by running it one time AND getting positive yardage on it.

That is exactly it. It is now a play that is on film and will make teams think about it when they run it.
Also now, they could ran a fake reverse which might cause the defense to follow the fake instead of the RB with the ball.

Why does plays like the Jet sweep and reverses work? Mostly its a form of misdirection. It takes the ILB's and Satety's eyes off of the RB's for even a split second which can make all the difference in the ILB being in the right spot or wrong spot.

Once the reverse or Jet sweep is ran effectively, the fake really works well.

You're right: you don't run a play like that as your bread and butter...maybe at UW they do, but not in the pros. You create indecision...hesitation in the defense. That gives an advantage to the offense even if you don't give it to the motion guy. Look at what Seattle, the most "college" of any offense in the league save for maybe Buffalo or San Fran, does: they set up all kinds of throwbacks off that kind of motion that gets the defense flowing away from that side of the field. It works...so long as you don't do it 10 times per game.

It's all about making defenses cover the whole field.

This team is better than they look. They have been decimated with injuries, but are getting some guys back. Randall and Rollins could get healthy.

Then there's also the issue of general underperformance, there's THAT too. They CAN play better than they have been, even with the injuries.

But the margin for error is all but gone.

Packers played well enough to win. Houston defense has been good this season, and they kept the Packers in check most of the day.

Maybe clutch, game-sealing drives will become a calling card for this team down the stretch.

They'll have to be better next week against Seattle...

Thanks for nothing, Saints.

Held serve today. Live to fight another day.

Jordy the star of the game.

Hard to judge the teams competency due to the weather, but had great field position in first half with only seven points.

Still two long drives in the second somewhat makes up for it.

Be interested to see if Perry can come back. They had a weak edge after he left. Guess he came back with the club though.

Nothing more frustrating giving up a first on third and long time and again. Especially when they run for it.

Detroit gets the mini-bye against the Bears next week then, what could be a tough game at NY.

After that, Dallas on the road but the Cowboys will probably have sewn up the 1 seed by then. Finally GB at home.

The Saints came out and just plain sucked. It's always about matchups, but certainly -- at home -- they should have hung 30+ on the Lions yesterday and they didn't do it. Still, Lions have two tough road games left (and don't overlook their ability to crap the bed against a team like Chicago). People are worried that Dallas won't have anything to play for when the Lions come calling, but if the Giants can knock them off this week that will be their "lock-it-up" game (since the Giants will have swept the season on them). They aren't going to go 15-1.

It's splitting hairs, I know, but the games that are going to bite them on the ass are the ones they were in a position to win but didnt in the conference...Minnesota, Atlanta (especially Atlanta). They really were never in the Indy or Tennessee games, and AFC opponents...

Starks is terrible. Michael even with 9 rushes for just 19 yards looked much better than Starks. Monty clearly needs to be our HB.

Hyde is terrible - can't cover and took a terrible angle to allow the opponent to score. Guion had a nice day. Both safeties played well. Randall blew contain. Rollins blew a tackle but came back right away with a nice tackle in the open field. I like to see rookies get their first whatever it is - so congrats Lowry, on your first sack, even if you were unblocked, and on your first pass defended, which looked earned to me.

Nelson (and AR more of less), had big days. Other than Starks, everyone else on offense pitched in a little bit. Cook and Cobb both had 3 recs for just 19 yards, but Cobb had a big TD and Cook had a big 1st down reception, IIRC on a 3rd down play on a drive that resulted in a TD.

At least we have playoff football no matter what when you think about it! It's obvious Michael should start, pass pro issues wont be an issue if he's in on 1st and second and then Starks or Monty does the pass pro on 3rd down. SHOT. OUT. OF. A. CANNON. vs STUCK. IN. THE. Keep an eye out for RB Anthony "Ace" Wales from Louisville Central HS. Going into yesterday's game averaging 7 yards a carry, Wales had 209 rushing, 53 receiving, and 5 TDs. He has 157(!) My gal was screaming at the TV while RIP let that onside kick go past him on to Adams. She was wondering why he did that! I explained the job of the front line to her and then everyone in the house re-lived the Bostic botch costing a trip to the superbowl and we all praised RIP for stinking to his assignment! The reverse/jet sweep play call to Janis was Mashed Potato Mike's gem of the game. Way to grind out a win boys! Brock sucks so that helped! Next week will be a whole different animal! I hope the hammy is healthier for some more key scrambles! The 3rd and long running first downs by the texans were maddening but not sustainable. Next week is a whole new animal but they can do it by not beating themselves!

Yes, the onside kick can be a fairly easy task if everyone accomplishes their assignments. Not only Rip, but the other two players in that area threw blocks instead of going after it. Made it easy for Adams to just fall on it.

On first down Michael won't have to pick up blitzes 90% of the time. Start him! Monty should be the change of pace passing back. Starks should be more limited in his touches but can serve a key purpose in pass pro. I think Monty and Michael need to touch the ball more than Starks while Starks pass protects more than those guys...if thats even possible.

Good, solid win for the Packers given the injuries and field conditions. Second half scoring drives by the Packers were clutch drives with great plays by A. Rodgers, Jordy, Monty and Adams. Finally, Michael got some snaps and ran decently. Monty confirmed that he deserves more playing time which he finally received today. Packers defense played solidly for the second week in a row. First Texan TD should have been offensive PI, it was an obvious push off right in front of the official. That was a 4th down play and the Texans probably would have tried for an FG if the penalty was called. In any case the Texans never got much going. Good ST work by Cobb and Monty. Hyde is a liability in the secondary. Time for Starks to ride the bench. Seattle next. Thanks, Since '61

Yeah, people are loving Rip right now because he's a hard-nosed SOB who gave a little spark to the O. And that's OK. But let's be realistic... if we had "real" running backs, Ripkowski would never see the ball, and shouldn't, except in rare, quick hitter short yardage situations. That's mostly what he's done so far, but in the big picture he's not the answer to our dearth of talent at running back.

DPF,Oppy,BrandenBurke,SqudRapids,Pack88, Zack. Where was your boy Adams? 7 targets,1REc. 17yds. 1 drop. You really saw what I have been Questioning about A-Rod and Adams. First No short passes within 10 yds. to get ADAMS going. Second. The offense went flat when A-rod started to force it to him. Avoiding Nelson cobb,Monty, etc. (This is exactly what I've been commenting about A-rod and Adams.) Again we saw Nelson saving A-rods bacon instead. (Great Game by Nelson!) Again we see the pushing off to make a catch. ( Sooner or later Adams is going to get called on this. ) So Boys who was the better WRs. today? When judging Adams or any WR it's about consistency. We saw who was #1, #2, #3 today. Propaganda and draft status does not make a WR. Favoritism only hurts the team. But enough said. I thought Burnett played his best game in years. So many big plays and stops by him. Looks like a lot of packers just had fun. Great to see.

It's hilarious to hear YOU, of all people, talking about propaganda and favoritism. Pot, meet kettle.

According to Pro Football Reference, here are the yards per TARGET for each Packer WR (targets / yards / yards per target). The HOU game is not included in these numbers. Highest yards per target are listed first.

D. Adams 86 / 776 / 9.0
R. Cobb 77 / 558 / 7.2
T. Montgomery 36 / 252 / 7.0
J. Nelson 108 / 754 / 7.0
G. Allison 8 / 38 / 4.8
J. Janis 18 / 85 / 4.7
T. Davis 7 / 24 / 3.4

So Adams has significantly more yards per target than any other Packer WR, and he is not targeted nearly as often as Nelson. He also leads the group in TDs, total receiving yards, and yards per reception.

Stop talking out of your ass. If anyone is showing propaganda and favoritism, it's you.

The significantly more yds? Were from Adams catching short. ( within 10 yards of A-Rod.) Last week was his longest catch after some short ones. THE STATS SHOW; Adams has learned how to run after the catch. Against the lesser quality CB etc. He has to catch short! In order to get the longer catch, or even make catches. And did you catch the picture of A-rod and Adams running out on the field together. Your stats surly will change. The consistency is what A-rod and this team needs. Your stats don't show what happen in this game or others. Jordy Nelson's do. If you love the roller coaster ride. Adams is your boy. But roller coaster rides never get you to the play-offs, Consistency does. One little footnote to this. As the Targets to Adams failed, A-rod could not hit the short pass to a open Monty for a first down. He is that emotionally connected to Adams now. FILM DOES NOT TALK. BUT ITS WORTH A 1000 WORDS.

Wrong. Either you are the most illogical person on this board, or you are delusional. Maybe both.

First, there is absolutely no reason to complain if someone gains yards after the catch. That's a good thing, not a bad thing, but you don't seem to understand that.

Second, Adams does NOT gain an unusual amount of yards after the catch, as you falsely claim he does. SportingCharts.com keeps a record of YAC, and virtually everyone keeps a record of yards per reception. If you subtract the average YAC from the average yards per reception, you can tell how far downfield the receiver is catching the ball, and how many yards he runs after catching. Here is how it shakes out for the main Packer receivers.

How many yards downfield does the WR catch the ball on average?

Montgomery - 1.2
Cobb - 4.1
Janis - 6.2
Adams - 8.3
Nelson - 9.6

So Adams catches the ball further downfield than any Packer receiver other than Nelson.

How many yards does the receiver run after the catch on average?

Montgomery - 7.2
Cobb - 6
Adams - 5.1
Nelson - 3
Janis - 2.3

So Adams runs less after the catch than both Montgomery and Cobb.

And in the end, Adams has more yards per reception than any of them.

Adams - 13.4
Nelson - 12.6
Cobb - 10.1
Janis - 8.5
Montgomery - 8.4

Obviously that long catch of 50 plus yards and his best game really helped. I'm just trying to help you get through the propaganda of Adams. I have to disagree with your stats but will accept them for now. Only because you want to hold your arguments to Stats, and not history. But your stats are old. ( Adams 1 good game put him there.) It won't be that way by the end of the season. Unless A-Rod throws that ball around, the packers will not make the playoffs. Golden Tate now leads the NFL. (YAC) You saw the results sunday. No Consistency with Adams. Unlike Nelson and Cobb. If A-Rod forces the ball to Adams, like your trying to force your Argument for Adams, the Packers will Lose. I was making the point that A-Rod must throw short to Adams first! And not make Adams his primary purpose!

LOL. So it's true then.... you really are the most illogical person on the board. OK. I'm done trying to reason with randomness and gibberish.

But just out of curiosity... which game was the "one good game" that you were referring to? The one with 85 yards and a TD? The one with 132 yards and 2 TDs? The one with 74 yards? The one with 156 yards? The one with 113 yards and 2 TDs? Or one of the others?

Ok - Lets talk Execution. All NFL shows Nelson rated 9th. Adams is 23 with Cobb @#50. Adams had 3 games above 100 yds. for 2016. The rest, small potatoes. Chi. 13 Rec. 10.2 avg. Longest 24 yds. Like I said small throws, small avg. Tenn. was a Loss. A Blow out! Who cared if he caught shit. The clock was the only thing that mattered. So throw out the 156yds. and his biggest avg. ever of 26 yds. Stats don't mean a Damn thing if you lose. His best game ever was PHIL. 5 rec. 113 22.6 avg. that included the 50 yard catch. But like most of your pennies in the wishing well, They do add up. Just not the force you want from a #1 or #2. While he is turning the corner and showing something.(mainly YAC) It's still small potatoes! It all equals ADAMS - NICE OF YOU TO SHOW-UP for 1 game. Dude you can't be serious when throwing his stats in my face. Not with how many Targets missed,Drops, Bad Routes, and A-rod picks. Your sentimental feelings are JUST TO MUCH.

I said it once and I'll say it again:

Just go ahead and make Rip RB2.

- Trustworthy
- Good pass blocking skills
- Good hands
- Great running power
- Decent speed
- Can be kept in for no-huddle and paired with 88 or 18

RB observation.

Montgomery shows again why he needs to be more involved in the offense. He had 6 rushes for 40 yards and 2 catches for 16 yards. He averaged 7 yards per touch. He just makes plays when he gets the ball in his hands.

I liked what I saw from Michael in this game. As he gets more comfortable in the offense the more I think we will see from him.

Ripkowski is a bull.

Starks is done. I think McCarthy noticed this to since he mostly went with Montgomery, Michael and Ripkowski most of the way.

Great win! Starks is not the answer at RB1
A mix of RIP, MICHAEL , Cobb and Montgomery could be the bandaid 4 playoff run. starks reads are off. He misses cut back lanes, open holes and doesn't fall forward for that extra yard or 2 (see RIP & Montgomery)

We need more creattive play calling like that Janis reverse (Nice MM) moving forward.
Use Cobb & Monty more on screens & quick passes that serve as run plays

We saw in returns that Monty can do things when he has a head of steam. Rather than run between tackles, get him in stride somehow - like a Sproles or Whitehead.

An ugly gritty win. The kind of performance that you need when conditions change the game plan. Those 2 long drives in the second half were something to watch. Of course there were issues....long passes when we needed first downs...not throwing to the open guy to throw it deep...Starks running sideways..... But we will not win next week with this kind of performance. We had excellant field position over and over and did not cache in. One game at a time....Ill enjoy this onw now and worry about next week later.
