GAME PREDICTIONS - NFC Championship Game

Green Bay Packers vs. Atlanta Falcons

Name Record   Pick Prediction
Adam 16-0 Green Bay Packers
Jersey Al 10-8 Green Bay Packers 34-31
I was much more confident last week with the Packers going up against a rookie quarterback, regardless of his first year success. This week is a different story. Matt Ryan will likley win the NFL MVP Award and has the numbers to justify it. The Packers will have to win this game like they did many in the late playoff run of 2010 - a late interception will be needed to save the day and send the Packers to the Super Bowl.
Andrew 12-6 Green Bay Packers 38-31
These get tougher each week and I wish we had a better idea what shape Davante Adams and Jordy Nelson really are in. because one of those guys missing isn't a big deal. Both? That's problematic. The key here will really be getting after Matt Ryan, and ultimately I feel the Falcons offensive line is vulnerable on pass plays. It should be a shoot out, and I am gambling that one big momentum changing play is via Green Bay's defense.
Cory 13-5 Atlanta Falcons 37-31
With three wideouts nursing injuries, Aaron Rodgers will have his work cut out for him. Matt Ryan and the 1-2 punch of Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman will make the Packers' bend-but-don't-break defense ulitmately break. If the Packers faced any other team in the NFC, I'd pick them to go to the Super Bowl.
Jason 13-5 Green Bay Packers 42-38
I made the mistake of questioning this team's ability to rise up in the biggest of moments and I'm not doing it again. Atlanta is on a roll and their offense is incredibly potent, especially at home. The two-headed monster of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman is enough to give the Packers defense fits and then throw in Julio Jones and the Falcons receivers and it's a tough task for Dom Capers and his crew.  But the Packers are scoring just as often, match up well against Atlanta's defense and they have Aaron Rodgers, something Atlanta does not.  Matt Ryan may be MVP but no one is dealing like Rodgers right now.  This shoot out ends with the Packers celebrating another trip to the Super Bowl and culminating an incredible run, rising like the Phoenix when all seemed lost just two months ago.
Jayme 12-6 Green Bay Packers 28-21
I feel good about this game. Better than I did about the previous two playoff matches. The Packers came close to winning in Atlanta earlier this year, and while the injuries this time around are different, this Packers team is stronger than they were in October. 28-21 has worked so far, I'm riding it out.
Michelle 12-6 Green Bay Packers 28-27
Both quarterbacks are deadly and both secondaries are middling. One interception will decide this entire game. Micah Hyde or Ha Ha Clinton-Dix - step up!
Ross 13-5 Green Bay Packers 38-36
I said on the radio and on the internet that the Packers and Cowboys were the two best teams remaining.  I believe now that the two best teams left are Green Bay and Atlanta.  Now is not the time to stop believing. Atlanta is the worst defensive team Green Bay has faced during this run with the exception of Detroit.  There isn't any real reason to believe Atlanta is significantly better than Dallas on offense.  Aaron Rodgers or Matt Ryan in a big game? Easy decision.
Zach 12-6 Green Bay Packers 31-26
I just can't see the Packers losing this game. I can't see the Football Gods flipping the script and ending this dream of a season. Not again. I think the "high scoring" narrative will be somewhat put to rest on Sunday - this is the second time these teams are meeting. There will be more familiarity.
Mr. X 12-6 Green Bay Packers 41-38
Same comment as last week: This will be a wild barn-burner of a game. Defense will go out the window but the Packers will be the last team standing.

Me being a Falcons fan, I respect your predictions but you say Atlanta is the worst defense that Green Bay has faced but Green Bay is the worst defense Atlanta has faced. I still think Atlanta playing at home will get it done.

I'm getting really sick of Atlanta fans telling us their defense isn't bad. IT IS BAD. All your rankings are bad. All of them. All your metrics are bad. All of them. You've played one good offense in the last 8 weeks, and they dropped 30+ on you with nothing to play for. WRs or no WRs, your D will get eaten alive by ARod. Your defense is actually worse than ours, which is really hard to manage. Kudos!

The real question is if ATL will score more on our almost equally crappy defense. That might just happen. But the way he's playing, I'm not betting against QB1. The guess here is that GB finds a way. 35-34 Pack.

I don't know which Atlanta fans are telling you their defense isn't bad, but Anthony Johnson didn't actually say anything of the sort. He said GB is the worst defense that ATL has faced, which is... um, y'know... quite possibly true.

That's a hard sell...they did play New Orleans and Carolina twice. And San Francisco who was almost historically bad.

Yeah, but the point, of course, is this: Anthony Johnson was saying that the "your defense sucks" argument can cut both ways, and that certainly seems to be quite true.

I would note, however, that no one actually said ATL is the worst defense GB has faced.... period. What the author really said was, "Atlanta is the worst defensive team Green Bay has faced DURING THIS RUN WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DETROIT." And that's something different.

I'm there with Bearmeat. It's not so much the media, fans, or experts calling our defense bad which it has been, but they FAIL to mention a word about Atlanta's Defense which is actually worse in many areas. They give up more points, passing yards, rushing yards, and have fewer sacks yet it's the Packers defense that's the only one talked about.

By the way Anthony, welcome to the site. Appreciate your post. It's always more rewarding when you can have a friendly and thoughtful debate about your team with someone on the opposing side.

As for the game, I would only add that GB really hasn't shown any loss of production on the road vs home. In fact, most players will tell you that while it's nice to be home at Lambeau, the indoor conditions are better for the offense. (Yet another aspect of the debate most of the national media hasn't mentioned.)

Good luck on Sunday. I think we can all agree we hope there are no injuries and that the refs call a good game.

Cheers...

So hard to predict without knowing the injury status of Burnett, Adams, Geronimo, Randall, Rollins and Matthews, not to mention Julio for the Falcons. And throw in a bit of the flu bug too. If both teams were at full strength (ignoring IR'ed guys like Lacy and Shields) I'd go with the Packers and feel confident. I'm guessing all of the above but Jordy play, although none at 100%. Right now I'd say it's a toss-up so picking with my heart and not my head I'll go Pack 38 Falcons 31. I'm betting on Matt Ryan making a mistake at a crucial time and Rodgers not doing that.

We'll give Ryan the MVP but we'll take the NFC Championship. And the Super Bowl.

Packers vs Falcons Live Stream

Watch Packers vs Falcons Live Stream Online Game. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers predicted the Packers would “run the table’ to earn a playoff berth. Rodgers and the Packers have far exceeded that prediction and will face the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game on Sunday (12:05 p.m. PT/3:05 p.m. ET, FOX).

Keep in mind that the last time these 2 teams played, the Packers did not have Montgomery, Cobb, Cook or Clay Matthews. For the Falcons, Julio Jones was hobbled with an ankle injury and Taylor Gabriel hadn't burst onto the scene yet.

I can see Adams playing with a heavily taped ankle, but Jordy I can't see playing.

It's gonna be a wild one. All of the Packers injuries and flu bug worry me a ton, but considering the fact that the Packers weren't playing as well during the 33-32 loss earlier in the season, and didn't have all the guys I listed above, they can absolutely win.

Whoever's holding the ball last and whoever's defense can get get the most stops will win. We saw the Packers defense surrender points on six straight possessions until Hyde's interception. That's all it takes -- either a turnover or one key stop. Packers 36, Falcons 34.

I know the odds are stacked against us. But this game is going to b won in the trenches. Forget about Rodgers and Matt for just a moment. Our offensive line is better than theirs. These 2 quarterbacks will go as far as their protection holds up. Between our line and Rodgers foot work, he could even find one of us open. So our O against their D, or their D against our O. I like our chances Even with a banged up crew.
So GO PACK GO!!

The way I'm seeing this game is that the Packers OL will be solid again which means Rodgers and the ground game will both be effective against the Falcons defense. After facing the Dallas OL last week the Packers defense should have a better day against the Atlanta OL. Our defense doesn't need to be great but they should be able to disrupt the Falcons run game and harass Ryan who doesn't move very well. Many pundits state that the Packers defense is not very good but in fact, during this 8-0 run the Packers defense is allowing a very respectable 19.5 points per game. Also, the Falcons have not faced a QB playing as well as Aaron Rodgers has played during the streak. The Packers can win the LOS on both sides of the ball and that will win the day. I like the Pack 36 - 23. Thanks, Since '61

Very tough one to call. Two not very good defenses against two very hot offenses. Let me preface my prediction by saying I HOPE I AM WRONG!!! 34-26 Falcons.

Back in early September, I made the predictions below, and got blasted with eight downvotes and zero upvotes:

marpag1 says:
September 06, 2016 at 09:55 am(edit)

1) Aaron Rodgers wins his third MVP award...

2)... despite the fact that the Packers run the ball more often and more effectively than any season in the past five years.

3) The Packers ride an easy schedule and home field advantage to a repeat of Superbowl XLV (2010), but this time they lose the Lombardi to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Obviously, I whiffed on #2 for obvious reasons, but I could still look like a genius on #1 and most of #3. As I see things now, my head is telling me the Packers lose this game in a squeaker, but.... Go, Packers!

While neither defensive squad team is going to remind me of the 63 Bears defense (GOAT in my opinion), it is safe to view the pieces and check and see how the whole matches up. I suspect that the Falcons D-line is outside of Beasley pedestrian, they looked much better last week because they played a terrible O line and they took advantage of it. The Packer Linebackers are as good as the Falcons so it is a wash. This week it is a different story the Packer O line is better than the Falcon D line and it will show in how they control the front. Beasley is talented but Bulaga killed him in 1st game. The Packer receivers are very banged up but the Falcon secondary is as weak as our own and they are also missing their best defender (Trufant) . This matchup will be key, as at some point they will play a lot of man coverage and it will be incumbent to see how GB handles this, if they crush the man coverage it will be game over as Rodgers is a zone killer. If, as in the last drive Atlanta wins the 1 on 1 matchups they will win. So for me I pray Alien AAron shows up and the WRs and TYmo have big games, if so GB wins if not I will still have enjoyed the rise from the ashes
