Packers vs. Eagles: Rants & Raves

The Green Bay Packers head into their third-straight road game against the Philadelphia Eagles this Monday night.  I'm sure many Packers fans are cringing at the fact that the team is being paraded in front of a national television audience in the midst of one of their worst stretches in the last few decades.  Since leaving Lambeau Field following their loss to the Indianapolis Colts, the Packers have given up over 40 points in consecutive weeks and have looked awful doing it.

What can we expect against an Eagles team that has been up and down this season, but is capable of dominating a game at any time?  Let's take a look at some of the things that will likely factor into the answer to that question.

Rants

Secondary is Primary

It has become obvious that the Packers secondary is the biggest area of weakness.  Opposing offenses have feasted on Green Bay corners since their victory against the Chicago Bears over a month ago.  The Eagles and rookie quarterback Carson Wentz are certainly capable of keeping with that trend.  Although Philadelphia ranks just 25th in total passing yards per game with 222, the Packers defense seems to be what fixes other teams' ails this season.  With a depleted secondary that lost Demetri Goodson last week and was forced to use their return designation on an undrafted free agent cornerback in Makinton Dorleant, the Packers have their work cut out for them.

The Eagles have come up big at times this season behind Wentz and a cast of very talented receivers that feature Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor and Dorial Green-Beckham.  Tight ends Zach Ertz and Brent Celek also lurk and just when you thought you were done cringing, don't forget about the very shifty pass-catching back Darren Sproles.  It's a huge mismatch in favor of the Eagles.  That can be said nearly every week and the Packers have certainly been stricken with some of the worst fate when it comes to injury at the cornerback position.  This has almost single-handedly put general manager Ted Thompson front and center of the argument against his gambling on the development of players that no other team drafted to play one of the most important positions.  The loss of Sam Shields and Damarious Randall has severely hurt the defense.  Quinten Rollins has regressed and continues to battle a groin injury that has to still be ailing him.  Beyond that it's Micah Hyde, Josh Hawkins and Dorleant, who hasn't played a single snap this season.

Sitting here writing this, I don't see how the Packers can avoid giving up another 40+.  This is probably the biggest key to keeping this game competitive on the scoreboard.

Make A Play. . Anyone?

I can sit here and litter this piece with a bunch of stats, but the bottom line is that the Packers just need someone, anyone to step up and make a play.  One play.  When was the last time someone in a Packers uniform did something special on the field?  Most of you are still thinking.  For those who still believe in and want to see something big from this Packers team, that's all it can take to ignite the team.  A big play.  A turnover.  A big stop.  An explosive play on offense.  And one that hopefully isn't' followed by a penalty.

This team is in such disarray that head coach Mike McCarthy is talking about how his team is getting closer and closer to actually taking the ball away.  That used to be a given with his Packers teams.  Long gone are the days of Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams and Nick Collins terrorizing opposing quarterbacks every single week.  The ball is not bouncing Green Bay's way at all right now.  They just need someone to make a big play.  When a team is bad or struggling, those things that are easy to take for granted just don't happen or don't come easily at all.

Triage

It's talked about every week as more and more players go down for the Packers.  Injury woes.  I'm one of the last who turns to injuries as an excuse.  It certainly matters and that's not lost on me.  But every team deals with injuries and some are just better-equipped to handle the attrition.  The Packers are no strangers to losing players and this season, the cupboards have shown not to be stocked too well.  What was hailed as another deep and young roster during the preseason is now just young, too young, to handle the task of being the next man up.

While it may validate some of the woes the Packers are dealing with, it doesn't change the fact that the loss of so many key players is causing this team to have one of its worst seasons in nearly a decade.  The scary part is that there are still another five games to get through and try to look respectable.

Raves

"Find A Way"

After four-straight losses, it's hard to come up with any big positives.  Quarterback Aaron Rodgers put up a rating of 115 last week and didn't throw any interceptions.  That used to be a given, but like I said, I'm scrounging for something to cling to.  If nothing else, Rodgers hasn't been the biggest of the problems for the Packers the last few games.  If there is to be any hope for this season for Green Bay, it still rests on the shoulders of Rodgers.  At this point, there's not enough around him to do their part to manufacture a win, but should this team decide to put together a solid effort that knocks our socks off, Rodgers will have to be atop the stat sheet.

It's clear that the Packers can't run the ball so expect to see another game where Rodgers airs it out 40-50 times.  Perhaps another week of Jared Cook will produce more than we've seen in a while.  The receiver group matches up fairly with Philadelphia's secondary so it's not impossible that this game is a true shootout.  The problem is the Packers just aren't playing well nor with any confidence right now.  Can they keep up?  "Chuck and jive" is their only hope in this game.

So much has been made about what's missing from this team that is keeping them from the column.  A stale message from the coaching staff, a lack of leadership, a lack of play makers, injuries.  They're all a part of the equation.  The Packers just need to find a way.  That's so generic and has no substance.  But right now, so do the Packers.  If I were in charge of talking to the team before the game, I would probably just look at them and say, "find a way on three" and bring the team in for breakdown.  For those hoping they can somehow eek out a big road win, I hope someone has the magic words.

Going Home

Regardless of what happens in Philadelphia, the Packers will head back home the following week for the next two weeks.  This year's schedule was certainly laid out strangely, giving the team some long stretches of road and home games.  It hasn't mattered in how the team has played, but at least those who have been waiting to make a trek to Lambeau Field finally have some football to look forward to.

Man, is that all I can come up with to be excited about right now?  Yikes!

On a side note, there is still time for those interested in helping Adam Czech' family.  We established a GoFundMe account less than a week ago and have already generated over $27,000 to a goal of $45,000.  I'm amazed at the support we've shown to Adam and his wife Julianna and their two boys, Edward and Reginald.  Here is the link to the website and please help, if you can, or share it with any who might be wanting to:  https://www.gofundme.com/adamspack.

The Eagles don't have nearly as many impactful skill players as either the Titans or Redskins. -- Plus they have a rookie QB who has looked more like a rookie his last few games. -- As a result, the Pack will probably break their losing streak on Monday night in a close one. ---(27-24)

Run the table (per AR)?? --- I doubt it. --I wish AR would quit talking and just play.

I hope but looking at the last few games...the Eagles are strong in their defense and have 11 guys on offense so they will be able to score at least 20 points if not more.

If the Packers are going to compete they are going to have to involve Cook and Montgomery and put at least 35 on the board.

more like 46 points. reminds me of the packs defense in the Lynn Dickey days. Difference is he had james lofton , paul Coffman, and Jefferson for recievers.

Thanks for the link about Adam. Are his articles archived somewhere? I'd like to go back and read some of them, especially his last article he submitted.

I'm not worried about the offense, although the Eagles are known to defend pass catching RBs really well. Starks needs to run better.

It's the defense of course that worries me. Maybe one thing that might help the run defense is to move Clay inside. If he can still be effective and not it's easier on his body, then I say give more snaps to Peppers to account for Clay moving inside. McCarthy made this change a couple years ago and it did wonders.

Ryan Matthews is doubtful to play, so I say plug up the middle vs. Wendell Smallwood and force Wentz to throw. Perhaps then we can play more nickel and dime to give these young guys help from Burnett and Clinton-Dix.

Well that's about as honest and realistic of an assessment of this team, season and our chances this Monday.

Talk about bleak. Well maybe just maybe a miracle will happen and we will actually win a game, and on National TV no less. I'm not holding my breath, or expecting anything positive, sad to say.

Need RC and, my god, even Cow to give me something to believe in besides Monty and Cook.

Packers best chance is to get off to a fast start and play with a lead. If they can get a 2 score lead early and take the crowd out of the game maybe just maybe the defense can make a play and force a turnover or two. Also, if they can get any semblance of a ground game going maybe they can control the pace of the game. We'll see. Thanks, Since '61

It's amazing how quickly this team has fallen from the ranks of the "Elite". As Jason has suggested injuries aren't an excuse, BUT to lose your top 3 CB's, 2 ILB'ers, OLB'er, 2 or 3 of the starters from the OL, and on and on and on, it DOES become a REASON, not an excuse. With that said this team as we all know struggled long before a lot of those injuries.

Now the Packers have a QB who runs the moment a D-Lineman gets even remotely close instead of standing tall in the pocket. As a result he misses WIDE OPEN receivers streaking right across the middle of the field or down the sideline. How can you find anyone open when you run LONG before you need to?

The sad thing is, I don't see a team with any confidence, energy, or even hope. The words from "Our Guys" seem empty and they play like it. The last 3 weeks especially we've watched the Offense try to fight and stay in the game only to give up a 70 yard TD in the time it took me to go to the restroom. Somewhere in the 3rd quarter of the last 3 games we've watched the Packers Offense just say "F It", what's the point when the defense couldn't stop Alabama right now.

I've shifted my focus to the Draft. If the Packers win so be it, I'll be happy they won. With that being said I just don't see many "W's" on the rest of the schedule, not when you get blown out by Indy and Tennessee. Them's just the facts folks. I hope it's a great draft class!

Injuries most definitely matter.
Teams are made up of players. All teams can scheme and draw up X's and O's, but it's the players that make them go.
Coaches and players have to say "next man up" but to me that is garbage. If Deion Sanders gets hurt and the "next man up" is Ahmad Carroll,...yes, that would make a difference. And to say the "next man up" should be better than Ahmad, I say, yes. Why not just have a roster of 53 all-pros? That way you'd be deep enough.
I still refuse to sit in the worry chair. I just adjust my expectations and watch.
Onward.

We agree, injuries matter but you also have to have a player that's somewhat capable to be able to step in. Losing Sam Shields last year was just as huge as it was this season, it was just the entire season more less this season. The Packers CONSTANTLY play what I call the "Hope Game". They let players go and "HOPE" the player they just drafted that year or the year before takes a step or can fill in. Randall and Rollins are 2 of the worst rated CB's in the NFL, same with Hyde and Gunter. I hope Goodson is okay, that was one of the most gruesome injuries I've seen in a while, but when he's on the field for ANYTHING other than ST the Packers are in a world of trouble.

I hate to beat a dead horse but letting Hayward walk was just plain stupid. Going into the season with Lacy and Starks was just plain stupid. Thinking losing Jordy Nelson was the sole reason your Offense went from Top 5 to bottom 5 was just plain insane, especially in the ULTIMATE team game.

I heard Barclay might be ready to play tonight against the Eagles. Why in the hell is Barclay on the roster and didn't the coaches see enough of Barclay last week (And years before) to figure out he really, really, sucks? Spriggs was pretty good in relief yet THIS coaching staff will go with Barclay. Unreal!

Agree TK...next man up is fine when you are regulated to the backup.... you can't really apply next man up with the same position suffers injury after injury. At some point in time there isn't even a next man on the roster. Look at running back, we had to patch it with a receiver and signed two free agents.

All NFL teams are fighting the injury issue, all season long.

Fans get confused with "injuries" and a "lack of depth". ------ Whatever happened to "next man up"? -- The most obvious weakness on this Packer team is the fact that the Packers have way too many "kids" who may or may not be NFL type players who are on the field waaaaay too much.

This is why TT needs to call it a career after 2016.

Yes. Got to bring in lots of good players to win in the NFL.
Seattle started 3 rookies on the OL today, allowed six sacks, and lost to TB.
Everybody needs more good players. They don't grow on trees.
If you pay your QB $20 mil and your OLB 13, the salary cap results in having some bottom feeders on your roster too. Late round picks and UDFA's. Hopefully those undrafteds include pleasant surprises like Sam Shields. Until he suffers his zillionth concussion.

I am with TK. It is the injuries. Shields will miss 15+ games. Randall has missed 6 (we are 1-5 during that stretch, beating only the lowly Bears), and he might miss Philly, and even if he plays, it will be his first game since undergoing surgery. Rollins has missed 3+ games and I believe he isn't 100% since he returned. Lacy will miss 11 games. We are 3-2 with him, and 1-5 without him. Starks missed 4 games. We're 1-3 without Starks. True, we are 0-2 since Starks' return, but we got far behind pretty fast in one game, such that one can at least argue that the running game threat was negated.

There is the injury versus lack of depth argument. I think having to play your nickle back as your #1 CB and your dime back as your #2 CB means you're going to lose. I do think having a serviceable #3 RB is a depth issue.

True but remember, the wording was "something special on the field". 2 picks were nice but they weren't game changers and didn't ignite. That's not to say it's HHCD's fault but one of them was a horrible throw by Luck. This year is void of a lot of "special".

His problem is staying healthy (hamstrings mostly). He's doing great now cause he is healthy. But I'd be shocked if he stays healthy. Just like I'd be shocked if CM3 ever stays on the field for a whole season. Hamstrings can be touchy as heck, especially if they are highly fast twitch.

He had the hamstring injury in 2012, since then he's never missed a game. Hayward missed 13 games in 2012 but played in every game his rookie season (2011) and every game since including this year so "Health" isn't the issue.

Since Hayward is doing it playing both in the Slot and playing Outside, could it possibly be Capers Defense and not Hayward or anyone else for that manor? I mean he's coached for over 30 years and his ENTIRE career has been good for 2 or 3 years and fired after that. Problem is the Packers continue to keep this bum!!!

To say Randall and Rollins are better than Hayward is a bit pre-mature. Rollins in particular hasn't looked too good since being thrust into the action this season.

My problem with the Pack not signing Hayward is the amount of overpaid and under-producing players on this roster:

Julius Peppers: should have let him walk after last season. Hard to see that a guy who plays 25~ snaps per game is worth 10.5 million. And whatever leadership he theoretically provides is theoretically, not helping.

Clay Mathews: Tossing aside his perennial mid-season hamstring hiatus, when he has been on the field, he has had long LONG strings of being completely invisible. Not a tendency one should expect when they are getting paid 13.75 million.

Randall Cobb: Most over-paid player on this roster. GB will shell out 9 million in total in 2016 for a mediocre, as this point in his career, slot receiver who struggles getting open.

Those are my top three. Surely there are others. I'd dump Peppers in a second to have Hayward and whatever the additional 5 million could have brought in via FA to fill the need at (insert position here) .

I'm with Cow... I'm sure TT went after Hayward and gave him an offer of what he believed was a fair market value for him based off of his performance and availability. It's great that these teams come in and overpay for Packers players and we all sit here and say would of should of but the fact remains San Diego has sucked for years and a lot of these other teams have that are picking up that talent. You can't sign everyone

Our depth is not, especially our db's. Don't think they are NFL caliber. Our starting db's are not even good. Watch some other teams and this becomes clear that TT has failed in drafting defensive talent. Bye bye TT time to retire.

I remember the Steelers drafting high to get Big Ben. Good teams have bad years. The Packers have had two bad years, but this year is an extension of last year's team. No leadership from Rodgers and most of the team is too young to provide it. Lack of playmaker on both sides of the ball and we're watching the results. So this season will either turn at Philadelphia or begin the long trek to a high draft pick.
Doubt we see a player the quality of Ben fall to Green Bay, but a playmaker will fall to the Pack on draft day.

Draft and develop can only work if the draftee is inherently talented, fast, ambitious and athletic. And that's why Ted Thompson's policy can fall short. We just need to look at Richard Rodgers and other players on the roster.
You can't expect Rodgers to carry the whole team if the defense is giving up an enormous amount of points come game day. This team cannot improve without looking closely at the root causes for this year's failure. I think TT will retire and MM will be replaced. It's a money issue for the Packers now. That new atrium investment depends on fielding a winning team. If MM can't give the Packers wins, he'll be gone. Once you affect the pocket book, you're dispensible.

Watched SNF (KC - Denver) last night and my what a game.

One thing I did notice was how hard it was to get anything off of both teams secondaries. There were a few big plays here and there, but by-in-large the defenses won the day. CB's in tight coverage, safeties flying in front of intended pass targets (yes, even across the middle). Contested passes, batted-down balls, hard hits on receivers. Everything was earned by the offense. Even the bigs moved well and were constantly pressuring or pursuing to the ball.

Then I compare that to our defensive play. Night and day. For the most part we've done well on interior run defense, but that's about it. I don't see anything like I did last night from our secondary. Even when we we're at full health.

Hate to say it but even Minnesota or Seattle's defenses play at a different speed than ours. For some reason watching top defenses in action is more gratifying to me than witnessing tons of scoring.

Considering all the draft capital GB has spent since their SB run on defense and their relative weak play, I don't know if the current regime will ever have a defense that can create havoc like the top ones in the league do now.
