Packers Vs. Cowboys: Offense, Defense & Special Teams
Something to watch for in each phase of the game as the Packers prepare to take on the Dallas Cowboys at 7:20 p.m. CST this evening.
Here's some key aspects to watch for in each phase of the game from a Packers perspective...
- Offense: Get meaningful yardage on first and second down–The Packers are only 11 of 38 on third down their past three games, which has to improve if the Packers are going to be one of the best teams in the NFC. Of the past three games, the Packers converted on 6 of 11 third downs (their best performance of the three) when their average distance to go was third-and-4.8. If the Packers can get third-and-manageable situations once again, they should see success. And that means getting meaningful yardage on first and second downs, no matter if it's on the ground or through the air.
- Defense: Find a defensive line rotation that works–As long as Ryan Pickett plays (which he probably will), this will probably be the same defensive line personnel the Packers will have for the long haul barring any more injuries. Each defensive lineman has their strengths and weaknesses, and all need to be fresh to be at their best. Defensive coordinator Dom Capers and defensive line coach Mike Trgovac need to figure out who's playing in which personnel packages (likely already decided) and how to best utilize them. The Packers are ranked only 25th in the NFL against the run, but last week against the Jets was a step in the right direction, and the defensive line played a big part in limiting the Jets ground attack. Stopping the Cowboys' talented trio of Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice will also be important.
- Special teams: Stop Dez Bryant on kick returns without the Cowboys starting drives on the 40–It does no good to kick away from Bryant if the Cowboys are going to get out to the 40 and beyond anyway. Squib it, pop it up, pin him on the sideline, whatever works, but the coverage units have to stop whoever returns the ball before the 40-yard line.

I have a nagging feeling that Pat Lee being out might reduce the effectiveness of our ST coverage. Here's hoping Bush continues to step up his game.

This actually is a great movie - from a historical perspective. The name of the movie is 'Downfall', and it was released a few years back.

The Packers should key the run as they did in NY. Then, the highly rated GB pass Defense should handle the Cowboys passing Offense. The Packers passing Offense should be good versus the poorly rated Cowboys passing Defense.

If football Outsiders metrics are reliable, they aren't as bad as I thought. They are 5th in the league in power success rate (i.e. getting short yardage situations) and 10th in stuffed percentage. Pass protection wise, which is what you're asking about, they are 6th in sack rate, but I don't think this alone is the best way of measuring pass protection. I don't include penalties, which are frequent problems with Dallas. Their overall pass offense is a little less than avg. which is due in part to the offensive line. Make of it what you will
