Packers Vs. Colts: First Impressions

My immediate thoughts on the Packers - Falcons game without benefit of a re-watch.

...

- Always great when your team is already down 7 points while CBS is still showing commercials.

- Despite the INTs on a tipped pass and overthrown pass, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is just not very good at providing safety help. Way too slow to react. One reason why the underneath routes in the middle of the field are the Packers' undoing.

- Richard Rodgers with six targets in the first quarter?. Really?

- McCarthy and Rodgers had some nice play calls on the first series, Montgomery with 24yds on two carries. Both have disappeared.

- And as I write that, Montgomery is back and immediately pulls off a big run. Might want to not forget about Ty, Mike.

- Colts calmy, moving down the field with short passes. What that Packers did successfully last few weeks and have forgotten about. Impressive 96yd drive while Rodgers keeps bombing away...

- Cobb active for the game but sees not a snap in the first half. If you're not confidant playing him, why is he active? Packers personnel management....

- Colts pass rush was better overall than the Packers pass rush. Only way Packers got pressure against  the supposedly horrid Cols OL was all-out blitzes.

- 3rd qurater, I write on twitter, "How about some throws to Montgomery out of the backfield?" Next play, swing pass to Montgomery - 13 yds, first down. Not that complicated, Mike.

- Packers have NFL receivers. Some very good ones. They don't get much help from a scheme standpoint.

- Love watching Kentrell Brice hit people. Bad intent with perfect technique.

- Down 14 points with the way they were playing, no way I'm happy with a field goal try deep in Colts territory.

- Nothing, and I mean nothing infuriates me more than throwing deep on 3rd and 4-6 yds. Especially into TRIPLE coverage! GET THE FIRST DOWN AND DON'T PUNT!

- I've been a McCarthy critic for years, but recognized his positives, so I have never called for his firing. I'm starting to waver on that.

- I hate to agree with Phil Simms, but yes, Packers should not have tried for the two point conversion.. Take the extra point and it's an 11 point game. Miss it and it's a 12 point game (need two TDs now).

- You're at Lambeau Field, and the Packers are losing by 18 in the fourth quarter - do you leave early?

- Single "pawsitive" seems to be just one new injured player - Micah Hyde.

Indianapolis 31, Packers 26

Why does McCarthy take Montgomery out after the first 2 plays of the first quarter and not put him back in until 12:05 of the 2nd quarter. I for one am sick of Mike McCarthy and the weird ass things he does.

I think I'm giving up. This was supposed to be the most complete team since 2010, now 4-4. Un-f******-REAL. Packers lost to a bad team today.

And like Al I have long defended MM, but I think I am officially done. This buffoon just keeps to his stubborn ways even if it means losing. Ive said that MM is a brilliant offensive coordinator but a downright terrible coach and I have officially reached my boiling point. He must be gone.

I'm done making excuses for this team. There simply is none. These guys were clear favorites for the Super Bowl going into the season, and MM has coached them into a level of mediocrity that has been unheard of in GB for some time. It's inexcusable.

Im with you all the way on that. Were just always saying that the next few games or next year will get better. Im just done with all that. This could go on for 20 years if something doesn't change. If only MM wasn't so complacent and unemotional we just might not have this old and tiring problem. If he doesnt change then TT ought to seriously consider moving on.

With everything the Colts have going against them, the Packers however, can be at the most inopportune time to themselves, the bearer of gifts to those in need of a present and give away what cannot be afforded.
I will assume a win for our Packers and hope our front seven with special consideration for one can shine even more so against the utterly worst offensive line in the NFL. If not, another checkmark against a new big deal.

First impressions:
STs awful again. I can't remember how long it's been since we've had good STs or a good ST coach.
Chuck Janis!!! His dropped pass should have been a TD. His lousy route running and inability to catch have hurt the team too often, His experiment and career should be terminated, tonight, don't even wait for tomorrow, he's chucked.
As usual the Capers defense did it's impression of a sieve. 96 yard, 5 minute drive allowed to close out the half after a rare great punt by Schum. Not to mention that the middle of the field was wide open all game as it has been for about 5 seasons.
In the first half the Packers played with no energy or sense of urgency again. They picked it up in the second half but they had dug too big of a hole to get out of.
Of course the defense could not make a late game stop, again, to get the ball back for Rodgers.
We were outplayed and outcoached in every phase of the game. Terrible coaching job again.
Oh wait, I almost forgot, we have injuries so everything is OK and the coaches are great when we get all of our players back for 2017.
This team has got to be kidding us. Al I'm with you. After being a solid MM supporter since 2007 I'm beginning to waver on him as well.
Thanks, Since '61

Our STs cost us 10 points. 7 given away on the KO return. 3 lost on the missed FG. To be fair Crosby has been great since 2013 so I can't get on him too much. Janis dropped 7 points and we left an extra point on the field. That's an 18 point swing. Should have been 37-24 Pack. Thanks, Since '61

ST KR return for TD = 7. ST return to our 45 = 3 more. Our missed FG, albeit a 48 yarder = 3 more. Drop by Janis. AR missed Nelson. Easy to come up with 13 to 17 or even 20. But that's not it.

Monty is running wild so we take him out. The run, the bomb, the short passing game were all there. We do a little of each but miss on the bombs. 3rd and 4 and we go for the bomb into double, maybe triple, coverage. Davis wide open short for a first and he is ignored. 2 TE sets again.

We seem to keep a bunch of players for their ST ability, but still suck at coverage. This isn't a reference to the gunners, but to the core or middle guys.

Bottom line is we led in rushing, passing, time of possession, won the turnover battle, and still lost. Front 7 not as good as I thought or Indy's OL is better than I thought. Needed blitzs to apply pressure far too much.

"Bottom line is we led in rushing, passing, time of possession, won the turnover battle, and still lost."

Just shows that stats can be meaningless, but also proves that timing, smart play and strong decisive coaching at critical monents, mean everything.

Why blame Janis . Yes he dropped or let a huge pass bounce off his head, but Rodgers going for bombs on 3rd and short are this teams killers.
But real issue is MM. He has to go. Sick of his style and embarrassing losses. Wait a minute it is not even a style its a moronic approach each game, constantly trying to be so smart and go away from what is working, poor clock and game management, lack of any killer instinct...... On and on.

I don't blame Janis. But I noticed something sunday. Instead of letting Janis catch one short to get the jitters out. It's Bombs away and you better catch it! But also. I don't like are Wrs wearing those facial shields. It catches reflections, magnifies and distorts the ball velocity. They will say no, but I wish they would not wear them. Stuff we can't see with the camera, may be seen only at a certain angle.

Minnesota is doing everything they can to GIVE the Packers a tie for 1st place and they come out and play a game like that? Can we please agree change is needed? The Packers shouldn't have needed any motivation to have them ready to play this game. They took the field knowing the Vikings had lost and failed on each level, Offense, Defense, AND Special Teams.

The last 2 weeks the offense went with a lot of 4 and 5 WR sets with no TE's. And they drove the ball and was much better.

Samson - part of the problem is that we don't pay the bills anymore or at least not as much as we did before. The Packers will soon have numerous year round revenue streams plus the fact that Lambeau has about a 25-30 year waiting list so winning or losing won't change the revenue very much. Also remember that TT, MM and Murphy have already earned more money than they can spend in their lifetimes so where is the motivation to make changes? The beat goes on, for now. Thanks, Since '61

We can't get a head coach during the season. But we sure can do without our OC entirely. When everyone feels their job is secure, there is no incentive to make radical changes, which are needed. Something needs to happen this week, the art of it is 'what'.

This isn't just a 'this year' thing. It's a long term malaise that has been creeping into the organization. We've been media darlings too long and have weeds of 'entitlement' choking out our sense of urgency.

When AR says he doesn't need pre-season snaps to get ready for the regular season, it's clear he no longer feels any pressure to preform. He has grown too accustomed to being the next first ballot Packer HOF QB.

Someone needs to close the doors at 1265 Lombardi Ave. and let the 'bovine excrement' fly. We are way past R-E-L-A-X. It's time to show a little pee'd off private owner here. The art of it is knowing where to apply the pressure and how much.

I've said it before as have several others, there's just too many chefs in the kitchen in Green Bay. McCarthy, Tom Clements, & Edgar Bennett all at the top of the food chain in Green Bay.

More specific though is this team has struggled since Bennett became OC and the WR play has gotten worse since he stopped coaching them after 2014.

I will coach the team better. And I am looking for a job. So , pay me whatever McCarthy makes and I promise to make all the changes needed. Sign a TE and RB. Short rhythmic passes and screens. And I will load the middle of the defense with backers.

This game was a Sham. Throwing deep so many times when it was 3rd and short, is a crock of BS! Such poor decisions by A-rod! I knew they were going to lose when A-Rod kept looking for Adams, and trying to force it in to him. How many times have I written they must keep it short for these Wrs. Let alone Adams. If they think Janis missed catch was the Game, Cut him! A-rod still wasn't happy with him even when he caught the Ball. In Fact I would cut the whole 2014 Wr class! (That includes Richard Rodgers at TE too.) Perillo deserves the start! The offense sucked! Monty was the only bright spot. Cobb should have just sat the entire game. Such a pathetic looking defensive backfield! The defense still is soft over the middle. Martinez is not doing his job. Thomas can be cut! Ryan and Ha Ha saved so many big plays. And what a screwed up 31 yard punt. Cut him! We knew when the season started this guy could not place the ball down right for crosby. TT should be fired! From super-bowl to sh*t.

The Packers defense has to be last in the league in 3 rd down conversations, can't just 1 DB actually knock down a pass or are the coached to let them catch it and just make a tackle.again we lose because one more stop was needed and did not happen.

You could see the outcome of that Falcons game going one of two ways...
1. ...the moral victory we were all hoping for. Things getting better, holding up on the road when undermanned, but losing out in the last minute.
2. ...a demoralizing "we should've won this", emphasizing the divide in the clubhouse loss.

The way they sleepwalked through the middle two quarters tonight, I don't wonder which it was...

I new this game was over when the colts scored right before halftime, and on the kick off the packers don't even try for a runback but are content to take a touchback and not even try for a return, theirs 11 seconds left in the half, a half that showed no motivation what the hell ya got to lose. At least try for a return and maybe a spark of life to start the third quarter.

his team has talent. It's just not being utilized. There are other coaches out there that would be getting way more from the guys we have than we currently do. It's sad. Much of it is in the mind. These guys just simply have to reach the limit where enough is enough and they get seriously ticked off and play that way. They also have to stop shooting themselves in the foot all the time. I'm not so mad that we have a cruddy team, but that we have a good team that's playing cruddy.

No surprises for me, they are who I thought they were:
1. Dix had two interceptions by playing out of position. Had first been been on target the guy was already past dix and would have been easy td. Second interception he was playing off 5 yards deep and caught an over pass.
2. Teams are hot trying to run against the pack. They all know the pass d is pourous so our run d looks better than it really is.
3. O line and d line are looking worse then when we had had guys suspended.
4. linebackers had hands on hips indicated tired out in the second quarter. This yeam is out of shape.
5. Nick perry was where? R rogers targeted? Davante adams doing what most of game?
Piss poor effort all around.

Yes it's only week 9. Yes there is still 8 games left to be played. But the panic alarm has been pressed. The Green Bay Packers are a mess and there is no R-E-L-A-X happening. Mainly because there has been no real glimmer of hope that what broke sometime in 2015 will be fixed anytime soon. So at some point you just have to be honest and call a spade a spade: We're a mediocre football team.

I do think at this point everything has to be on the table in the blame game.

Let's start with Ted Thompson.

We've drafted defense heavy the last 5 years and what do we have to show for it? Still a below average group overall. We could not generate a pass rush against the worst o-line in the league? Are you KIDDING me?

Too many hole fillers and not enough play makers in too many positions.

We have a below average receiving group. They cannot beat man coverage, are slow, and terribly inconsistent.

Absolutely no TE is painful. Outside of J-Mike he cannot draft a TE to save his life.

No RB is also painful. We started the season with 2. We gambled. And lost. Now we're forced to use a WR as an RB and hope Rodgers can be a healthy Russel Wilson.

Ted absolutely refuses to engage in the free agent market. Which is fine but in that case he needs to hit on most of his draft picks. Lately he hasn't and the result is what's on the field. And what's on the field isn't good.

Moving on to coaching.

Mike McCarthy has lost his touch. The team is undisciplined, unprepared, and lacking fundamentals in every facet of the game. He's not getting his team ready to play and his lack of creativity and stubbornness at this point is costing the Packers. Teams have figured us out and we lack the ability to adjust to that. The result is horrible play calling and stalled drives.

Not that it truly matters but I'd love to know if MM calls these 50 yard bombs or if it's Rodgers deciding to do it. Because whoever it is needs to be slapped upside the head.

A rookie coach for the WRs has been a failed experiment. This group, after last season, was in dire need of someone who could mask their many many many faults/warts/issues and help them develop. The took a chance on this rookie guy. But wow. The same problems that plagued us last year continue this year and may actually be worse. How is a guy like Jeff Janis still even around? We hear he's still "not ready". I get that the offense isn't pre school math easy but come on now. He's in his 3rd year. At what point is he just never going to be ready? Is that a coach issue or a player issue-I'm not sure-but if you're in the NFL there should be some of both. Coaches helping you develop and players taking the next step. Neither is happening here.

Speaking of, I still cannot believe how in the heck Ron Zook-a Shawn Slocum understudy, won the ST job. Are you kidding me? Yes that was a couple years ago now but we're still sitting here week in and out going HOW? WHY? HUH? Just like we did all those years with Slocum. Special teams just continues to be a problem for this team. When they replaced Shawn they should have cleaned house with that entire unit and found outside blood. They didn't and here we sit.

Dom. New week. Same problems.

Edgar. New week. Same Problems.

Lastly players.

These are professionals and they should be able to execute. They aren't.

I get that you can't squeeze blood from a stone but at times there are things that are RIGHT THERE for the taking that seem to just fail to happen.

Let's start with our 20 million dollar QB. I have no idea how he went from elite to average in a little over a year but wow the fall to Earth has been painful. His fundamentals and decision making are abysmal. He needs a coach who isn't going to baby him. I know he's sensitive. It doesn't need to happen in public but he needs to put in alot more work and get back to some basics here. He likes to call people out on the field for their mistakes. Well it's beyond time he needs to be called out for his. Zero excuses why he couldn't take advantage of a 31st ranked defense.

Jeff Janis and that drop. Just ugh. You are paid to catch the ball. You had ONE job and didn't do it.

Mason Crosby with the line drive kick off. If there is 1 thing you avoid in kick offs and punts it is the line drives right down the middle. And 1 second into the game what does he do? Line drive right down the middle. Then he missed a FG. I mean two glaring errors that cost this team.

Richard Rodgers just continues to disappoint.

Adams at one point close to the half had 2 catches for -1 yard.

Rollins spends more time on the grass then he does standing upright.

There is alot of blame to go around with pretty much everyone failing at their jobs. At this point there is no easy fix. Not anymore. It's no longer about a bad game or bad stretch. This has been a consistent issue since last season so reality is-this is the Packers. So there really is no point in hoping it'll get fixed next week because it won't.

And before I hear it about injuries do hurt yes absolutely. No RB is huge I get that. Clay Matthews being out hurts the pass rush. Peppers is old and alot slower. But let's also not use that a crutch to mask the fact the Packers are just not good right now. You can tell it's way deeper then a few key injuries.

I think significant changes have to made for 2017 Packers to be much different. If there is a team desperate for something new it's the Green Bay Packers.

Wow there leap, that was some output there. I'm still reading through but want to say that the receivers aren't as bad as you might think. If you watch film, there are many times that there are open receivers that AR completely ignores. Giving up 1st downs for gorilla heaves. I will say however, we are lacking that top tier guy who just keeps making plays. I love Jordy, but I don't think he's going to be that guy anymore. If we could get a top WR, Jordy would be way more dangerous than when he has to be the #1. Not his fault. Love the guy, and actually like most of our guys. I do say however, Janis should be let go and get Burks or Starks back on the active roster. (back to your article....)

LOLOL! Sorry my post did get really long. I'm long winded. Clearly.

I do think our receivers overall are below average. There are times Rodgers has to pull the trigger and doesn't. If he would there may be some better output from them. It starts with coaching. They should be putting these receivers into better positions-such as bunch formations and coming outta the back field to help them because they often don't uncover.

This team lives or dies by Rodgers. Right now he's not good so the team is not good. I get that. But not having a top tier receiver hurts as well.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Living and dying by AR. When you invest that much money in one player, it lowers your ability to field players of adequate ability in other positions. If that star player doesn't perform, he does more to negatively impact a team than if any other lower paid guy would if he underperformed. I am beginning to see a solid argument to spread that money out more instead of massive investments in one or two positions. It makes for a better overall team while not necessarily making any one aspect 'the best in the league'.

Well you absolutely have to have a good QB in the league. So I get investing in one but he's paid 20 million a year and isn't playing like he should make $20 bucks. That's a problem.

The other issue is our other highest paid player-Clay Matthews-spends more time on the sidelines then he does on the field.

So our money is significantly tied up in 2 players who are both not producing. It's a problem for sure. But not sure it's an easy fix. Unless you can draft a good QB and develop them every 3 years not sure how you help that.

Unless you are NE it just doesn't happen.

Leap, on TT, I have to admit I'm not sure what type of Defense he is trying to build. The problem with draft and develop that I see is that you are perpetually young and learning. You never get to the wily veteran level because if you draft good guys, you then release them when they demand a premium salary. It's a tough balance for sure.

We had way too many young DB's on this team We needed volume but we had nearly no experience at all outside of Shields. This constant building from the draft always leaves you short on experience. TT has to balance that better.

Ding, Ding, Ding..... I've said for years Ted T is a excellent Cap Manager, but why wouldn't he when his solution for everything is the UDFA? Ted refuses to bring in any veteran with experience. The Packers have always been known for having complicated Offensive and Defensive schemes, one's that take a few years to learn. TT is always clearly out the "Older" for the young and cheaper which clearly doesn't mean better.

I figured it out - posted during the game. MM wants to be fired. If he walks away they don't have to pay out his contract. Only thing that makes sense.

And AR - sorry, he has just lost it. He's now an avg qb. Years wasted under MM. Everyone would be thrilled to see him find it again, but if it his idea to throw those long passes, he's lost his brains too. He used to be a smart and talented qb. Now he is just avg and stupidly stubborn.

Frustrated with everyone else.

This was questioned at the beginning of the season. But how much rope should MM give A-Rod. Is A-rod trying to get MM fired? After this game; TT needs to get them in his office.

For two games Green Bay played the short passing game and made headway using Monty/Cobb as RBs. This game they started it but went back to the same gameplan they used in the first four games. The outcome was expected. They are going to be an average team this year. They could be better, but somewhere they think (they being the coaches and Rodgers) they have a better solution....so far they better stick with the New England game plan of short passes, move the chains, and take those long passes when they aren't expecting.

You are delusional, but I love it!. Why not just go for it and pull a Tin Cup?. Playing more loose would probably help the most

The Packers' next three games are away. Since they cannot even win at home, I concur that this season is over.

I think it's time for a change. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expect different results. MM's offense has pretty much been the same for the last few years and defenses are having an easy time figuring it out. In my opinion, MM is not effective with the players any longer and much of what he says is going on dead ears. Rodgers' window is closing and I'm afraid that unless there is a change that we will continue being disappointed.
