As reported by Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com, a member of the Green Bay Packers met with Michigan defensive tackle Mike Martin following the North squad's practice at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. this afternoon.

It's important to note that just because a scout met with a particular player, that doesn't mean the team is going to draft him. As Campbell points out, "Many of these interviews are scouts getting the players' number and scheduling longer interviews for later that night or another day."

By the time the Draft rolls around, the Packers will have met with a very large number of draft-eligible prospects, so this particular meeting with Martin is only a drop in the bucket compared to the many they'll do.

But it's always interesting to see how the Packers go about their business, and Martin is of particular interest because of the need the Packers have along the defensive line.

Martin had a very productive senior season with the Wolverines, racking up a career-high 64 tackles, including six for a loss and 3.5 sacks.

After an extremely disappointing 2010 season in which Michigan ranked 110th in the nation in total defense, Martin was part of a resurgence under head coach Brady Hoke and defensive coordinator Greg Mattison that earned the Wolverines an 11-2 record and a berth in the Sugar Bowl this past season.

And it was Martin's performance in the Sugar Bowl that may have raised his draft stock. Facing ACC champion Virginia Tech, Martin showed a non-stop motor by coming up with single-game career-high 10 tackles, a very high number for a defensive tackle.

Even though he played nose tackle in college and could get away with it at that level, Martin is undersized to take on that role in a 3-4 defense in the pros. He measured in at a shade over 6-1 and 307 pounds at the Senior Bowl.

At that size, however, Martin does get good leverage. And he had an impressive showing at Tuesday's Senior Bowl practice, according to Campbell.

"One of the biggest stars on Tuesday was Michigan defensive tackle Mike Martin," writes Campbell. "He abused Ohio State center Mike Brewster on multiple reps. He had a few wins on bull rushes and got one win after he rocked Brewster onto his heels before jetting by the center. It was an impressive day from Martin and a disappointing day for Brewster."

With the relatively disappointing seasons put forth by Mike Neal, Jarius Wynn and C.J. Wilson, it's conceivable that the Packers would have interest in a guy like Martin to play their five-technique end in their base defense and an interior pass rusher in their sub-packages.

Martin is generally considered to be a mid-round draft prospect, but the type that could be taken on day two of the draft if he impresses NFL decision makers enough between now and April.
