Packers vs. Titans: First Impressions

Jersey Al is out today as he attends his son's wedding so I'm taking the reins for a week.  These are my unfiltered first impressions of the game between the Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans without the benefit of enhanced replay or film study.

1st Quarter

Surprise onside kick by the Titans to start the game and Joe Thomas gets on it.  He's an unsung player for the Packers this season

An easy third down conversion missed because of a badly thrown ball by Aaron Rodgers to Randall Cobb.  Not a great start for the offense

Demetri Goodson gets to the punt down field and appeared to have it inside the Titans five-yard line but Goodson can't control the ball and he slides into the end zone.  Fundamentals, play makers.  The Packers lack both lately

Jake Ryan appears to have an ankle injury.  Big loss if he's out.  And he is

Julius Peppers walks past DeMarco Murray and Murray jogs around the edge and into the end zone.  Not a Packers player on the screen.  I'm off the "Packers stop the run" train.  That was a mere mirage.  And just like that, the Packers face another early 7-0 deficit in a game they were favored to win

Now T.J. Lang is coming out and will be replaced by Don Barclay.  God have mercy.  With Lang in a contract season and already needing hip surgery after the season, have we seen the last of Lang in a Packers uniform?

Packers offense is on life support less than five minutes into this game.  A three man rush gets to Rodgers and down he goes.  They have their work cut out for them today

Now Letroy Guion hits Marcus Mariota after an offside and a scuffle ensues.  Titans tackle Taylor Lewan is ejected for pushing a referee.  Somehow that should benefit the Packers but somehow it probably won't

Murray throws a touchdown pass to Delanie Walker who snuck past the defense.  And why not?  The Packers are so bad right now, I'd be confident trying anything.  14-0 Titans

Packers offense with another lethargic three-and-out.  Not so much as a hint of anything going and another sack of Rodgers on third down

Jayrone Elliott makes a stop for a loss in the backfield.  Makes sense that he hasn't been on the field all season long. . right?

Anthony Fasano, who has no business sneaking behind a defense, is all by himself in the end zone for an easy touchdown catch

The Packers are broken, bad and lost.  This team is in complete disarray.  And there are still 45 minutes left to play

2nd Quarter

Finally, some signs of life as the Packers march down the field and punch it in with a quick slant to Nelson.  No shutout today

Titans respond with an easy touchdown drive with no pressure on Mariota. Two big plays get behind coverage.  Easy six for the Titans

Davante Adams is clearly the Packers' best skill player this season not named Aaron Rodgers.  Wouldn't have thought we'd be saying that a year ago.  Heck, a few months ago!

Packers get inside the red zone and have to settle for a field goal.  That shouldn't be surprising but the way today has gone, it may be a win to just come away with points

Packers defense finally gets a stop and Trevor Davis promptly fumbles the punt.  Titans take over in the red zone.  From bad to worse

A James Starks screen for a touchdown.  Been calling for more of the screen all season long.  Probably doesn't matter today, but still good to see.  Of course Mason Crosby misses the extra point

Titans driving to end the half, have an easy fourth down conversion and Mariota mercifully misses Murray wide open in the flat

Packers try a Hail Mary and it's intercepted after tipping around.  After last season, I don't think the Packers can expect to get one for a few decades

3rd Quarter

Packers defense gets a stop.  Packers offense converts two fourth downs and Rodgers scores on a long run and another melee ensues after Rodgers is hit by Titans safety Parish Cox.  Good to see some fire from the Packers in protecting their quarterback and showing some fire.  Two-point try is no good, a dive to James Starks which had no chance.

Jeff Triplette is the worst thing for the NFL and he's in charge of games that count.  That's the world we live in

Packers have the Titans in a third down and give up an easy touchdown when Quinten Rollins bites and leaves his man wide open.  Titans receiver Sharpe lays down after the score as if he's sleeping and frankly, I don't blame him

David Bakhtiari is out and replaced by Jason Spriggs because. .. the 2016 Packers

Packers of course have to settle for three after a penalty and a sack back them up into third and way-too-long

This game is three hours old and we still have a quarter to play.  Thank you, Jeff Triplette and crew!

4th Quarter

Packers driving and have to go for it on fourth down and Richard Rodgers drops a manageable throw.  That's the day it's been

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix with the tough roughing the passer but honestly, I'll take it every time.  If you can't leave with a win, at least leave the opponent with some extra time in the tub this week

Rodgers has resorted to throwing passes into the ground when receivers are open.  He looks spent and done with the day

And then a deep interception where no Packers receiver was to be found.  The reality is, Rodgers knows he's coming back regardless of how this season turns out.  Doesn't seem to be playing to save anyone else with some of these throws

Titans overpower the Packers and nearly get into the end zone, which would have given them 50 points today

Rodgers is still in this game but is it even worth my questioning decision making by the Packers at this point?

Packers run into the kicker and Micah Hyde is blown up trying to fair catch the kick.  Hyde is still down

The biggest debate right now is what to expect from Mike McCarthy in the post game press conference.  We won't hear any of his explanations but I'll bet he's going to start getting asked for them behind closed doors

Seeing Rodgers out there with 4 minutes of garbage time left convinced me that MM is no longer dealing with reality. So, playing Rodgers in the preseason to get ready for the season is a dangerous waste of time, but getting him sacked by Orakpo down by 22 with under 4 minutes left is sensible? It's beyond irresponsible.

Ironically, my Packer fanhood began when the Packers crushed the NY Giants 37 - 0 in the 1961 NFL Championship game. I followed the Pack through the 1962 season and I've never looked back. If I was ever going to follow the Giants it would have been back in the 80s. Stuck with the Pack then, stick with them now. Thanks, Since '61

You are finally starting to see the light it seems. Coaches need to be held to the same standard as players and a message needs to be sent. Capers is the likely sacrificial lamb and most logical. He's just awful and the defense is the most pathetic part of the team. The 2nd defensive man in charge should be able to do close to the same job as old Dom.

It is time for TT and Company to go. Yes, that means everyone.

Blow it up. Start over.

The sad thing is that 8-8 might just win this division this year, and the only chance we have to start over is if we finish 5-11 or worse.

Why do you find in necessary to takes "Jabs" at people when the whole point of the jab is to get under the person's skin? IMO Bearmeat made a valid point, an opinion which is EXACTLY what this board is for. But there always has to be a few who make it personal by commenting about the person instead of the Packers.

With the comment you made, what part of that had to do with the GBP?

Told Ya. Pass short of WR,pass short of WR ,pass short WR. Give A-rod his PEDs. Adams wrecked A-rod. Oh he's so good now. All that special treatment. He still sucks and you can have him. This entire class of 2014 was a disaster. So blame MM. Not A-rod or TT. I told you guys what would happen. These guys don't care. If they drop passes , they all get paid, and the coach will take the heat. And you also wanted Thomas over Ryan. Such wisdom there. Such sound moves by TT. Please retire TT! But trade A-rod first. And take Adams with you.

Realist get another check mark.

Fence sitters fall to one side but still hang on when their shoe laces get hung up and are looking for backup.

Deniers are 0 for a million but who's counting.

A Tale of Two Halves yet again...not really...but I have a kind heart.

Let's list the defensive players that must be retained, option pick up, extension.....a very short list indeed.

In the words of Ross Perot...." Do you hear that great sucking sound, it's your jobs going south."

Every player and coach should be on alert.

he's lost the team and wholesale changes are needed in the coaching staff. things are just plain stagnant and starting to stink. this season is lost. maybe they can be top 10 in the draft.
rodgers play has devolved to mediocre at best. bad throws, holding the ball to long, bitching at his receivers and linemen. i think he needs a change of scenery along with Mathews, whos never on the field. be nice to dump these 2 big salaries and sign some FA.

Congrats To Al On His Son's Wedding! Day! The season is going up in smoke. How could the Vegas Odds Makers have the Packers on the road favorites +2. The O-line is now banged up and looks like Jake Ryan is going to be missing games. The season is a wash out. And it's time for some new leadership. This team is HORRIBLE! Cheer Up everybody there is a silver lining 1) A better draft position 2) There is good chance we won't have to listen to Joe Buck and Troy Aikman broadcasting a Packer game for the rest of the season! Cant really blame capes he disnt draft these losers. Brice a smallish undrafted rookie cant cover cant tackle but he is out there giving up points fastwr than the offence can match them.

My impression is this team is a mess and needs change in the worst way possible. Their preparation and game planning is ineffective and the execution is abysmal.

This team is extremely lost, and I don't think at this point MM is the one who can provide the answers. He's had a year and it seems to be getting worse instead of better.

I don't think crossing my fingers for a post season birth is where I'm at right now. I'd like to see this team finish the year, clean house, get a good draft pick, and start over in 2017.

Trump was never an underdog. The polls were not accurately accessing the voter base. As a matter of fact, the polls helped Trump win because they had the reverse psychology effect of suppressing blase´Hillary voters who figured she would win anyway. The media and the people who run this country play high level mind games.

The rationale for running the board is similar to expecting your team to step up and turn the season around each week. The true believers expect the team to improve. Every week many here have all sorts of fixes for the offense. Each week it's time to clean house. Each week lately everything is a dumpster fire or some other cliche. Today the Packers got beat by a so-so team that made a hell of a lot less mistakes and showed some heart. They can still salvage the season, but it's going to take some serious soul searching by the multi millionaire players who are coasting along waiting for regime change or something. Not likely but possible

First impression...

Embarrassingly pathetic first quarter...

I will give them credit. They tried to get back in it but that first quarter killed them.

What a brutal way to lose a game.

I know most people will want to blame McCarthy for this game. And he may end losing his job with what happens the rest of this season. This game is not all on McCarthy though. The biggest thing I didn't like with McCarthy again was how much he used Richard Rodgers, how little he used Ripkowski, Davis and Allison.
Richard Rodgers drops their last chance of making a comeback in the game on one series, the next he stops his route which leads to The interception.

One thing we can hope for is this being a week to week league. Hopefully next week things drastically turn around. This season isn't over and Im not ready for it to be over. But it will soon be if they don't change and start playing better.

This entire cluster f is on one person ted t for his piss poor drafting. I'm convi ced a lot of the injuries are due to drafting injury prone college players other teams passed on and under sized players as well. Our 5'10 185 d backs cant take the bezting frim the 6'5 tight ends. Thats why they are all hurt. Just no toughness on this team.
Did perry datone daniels play today. Peppers? They cant all ge spent by jow?

@ Al B...clearly a new philosophy of drafting college talent needs to be put in place. It needs to start with an emphasis on drafting tough, strong players, because no amount of change in training staff is going to fix the amount of injuries we are seeing on this team. The number of injuries this year is to the point of being ridiculous. Part of it is players not playing at full speed and motivation, and that's putting them in position to be injured. The play Lang got hurt on, he didn't play through the whistle, and stopped when the back was down, rather than keep running up the field. Linemen need to be aware of people flying around a tick or two after the whistle. No excuse.

Few positives, after half a season it looks like they upgraded the punting, Starks now looks like the solid #2 he has been, Adams may be a solid intermediate WR if they can find a "young Jordy" to be #1 and TE to go with him, Barclay finally looked serviceable once he got more reps as a backup, Perry does not rush as well without the threat of Mathew's but he held his ground and tackled in text book form today their most consistent defender. McCarthy will get one more season to turn it around (2 years left on his deal), but the move Thompson should/has to make is swapping Clemans & Bennett for Norv Turner, that is where I would start with coaching changes.

I wrote in Acme's game thread that I thought Barclay had a pretty good day. No one thought I was amusing.

Two weeks in a row we have watched this team play unprepared, uninspiring football. Add undisciplined to that list today as the Packers had 100 yards in penalties.

These are not player issues. These are clearly coaching issues.

TT won't fire McCarthy this season. But if McCarthy is the HC next season, I say it's time for TT to retire.

Tenn didn't draft any of them, you know. Instead they were dreadfully bad for a couple of seasonsr, and built up immense cap room so they could buy a bunch of folks.

You may not agree but I think the 3-4-4 should be replaced. Without Mathews, it exposes how bad the LBs have been coached. Moss needs to go!

Cow, well said. We can talk all day about uninspired football, but when the defense is only there for show (giving up an average of 10 yards per play) everything else is meaningless.

I can't post for a bit: I have to run to the grocery store. While I'm out, maybe I'll look for a sale on pitchforks at the hardware store.

Theres so many holes in this team that theres a chance we are going to be bad for a few years now. No matter who the coaches are. This team absolutely sucks. Wouldnt be surprised if Rodgers retired after this season and im being dead serious. Hes got his cancer of a life ruining future wife and tons of money, why would he stay? He looks like hes completely checked out. You heard it here first, Tony Romo will come home to Wisconsin next season and maybe we will draft a QB high to learn under him.

There's no way to put a positive twist on this team The players have obviously quit on McCarthy, Capers for sure. Thompson has drafted for years to fix this defense and it's almost as bad as it was 5 years ago.

We have referred to Indy and the Titans as two of the worst teams in the NFL the last few weeks. We expected the Packers to beat them with no problem what so ever. I think the time has come to start looking at the Packers as one of the worst teams in the NFL. It's either that or we're one the worst Coached and Managed team in the NFL. Either way this team needs a cleaning from Top to Bottom.

Take your pick, but it's one of the two!

@Nick....people are finally starting to wake up to this fact. I knew this 4 weeks ago. There's big problems in river city, and no amount of "getting healthy", or "pad level" is going to fix it. Not this year.

This team has lost it. Lost it's confidence and lost it's focus. After the first Titans play from scrimmage, I started watching the game as I would watch the Bad News Bears, trying to imagine the worst next thing that could happen and crack up laughing when it did. In the coming weeks, when the first bad thing happens on the field, the team will crumble. Maybe they should let Brett Hundley play so he can be showcased and traded for a 2nd or possibly 1st round pick next year.

Keep Hundley, trade AR to the worst team in the NFL and I am glad MM put him on the bench to end the game too bad it wasn't sooner! They have nothing to lose by starting Hundley next week, send a message to AR,sell your house in GB,I really wonder if they could even get a decent draft pick for him now

I supported the coaching staff last year through the struggles, but this is a "What have you done for me lately league?", and right now, they've done nothing. I'm ready for Elliot Wolf to take over and clean house.
Looking at the next two games, 4-7 is very likely. As much as I love this team, if we get knocked out of serious playoff contention (likely next week), I'll be okay with tanking the season. One, because picking in the top ten would be nice for a change. And two, no coaching changes will be made if we limp into the playoffs and go nowhere. It's time to take action.

Nonetheless, Go Pack Go!

name on packer outside daniels who could start on seattle's D.

we need a wholesale housecleaning. go into rebuild mode, new GM who brings in new coach. TT has lost his magic, and i must say i have always been largely in agreement about not wasting big bucks in free agency. but he was drafting better then. look at cow's list, of this pathetic D. and then the O either AR cannot hit a 7 yard pass on the first series to an open cobb, or he throws one and the other Rodgers drops it. Spriggs turns out to be someone we traded up for? lets start over

Trade AR to Cleveland where his poor level of play wouldn't be as noticeable I have grown tired of watching his epic collapse and finger pointing, seems the offense is sick of it too.dating back to last year I am stunned by how fast he has deteriorated.

For the first time in as long as I can remember, it's possible I've never done this, I shut the game off midway through the 1st quarter and got the lawn cut for the last time. (I hope) Time well spent on something besides an event that had the potential to be hazardous to my health. (literally) Sick of all the yelling and screaming. I was already in 'yell at the TV mode" after that idiot Cobb dropped an easy catch an 3rd & 4 on the 3rd play of the game. This team was not prepared to play in any way.
Coaches should be held to the same standard as the players, and an assistant coach should be let go. I'd let Capers go, and let the 2nd in command take over. He couldn't possibly be ANY worse than old Dom.
