Packers Take Hightower in First Round of #MockFour

Packers Take Hightower in First Round of #MockFour

With the 28th selection in the first round of #MockFour mock draft, the Green Bay Packers selected Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower.

If you don't know what #MockFour is, I highly suggest checking out their website. In a nutshell, it's a collection of 32 bloggers and Twitter personalities representing every NFL team taking part in an entire seven-round mock draft through Twitter by following the hashtag #MockFour.

For the second consecutive year, Zach Kruse and myself are happy to be representing the Green Bay Packers, making selections as if we are playing the role of general manager Ted Thompson and the rest of the Packers braintrust.

What makes it really exciting and really an honor is the other great NFL Draft analysts taking part in #MockFour such as Russ Lande of the Sporting News representing the Oakland Raiders, Chris Steuber––director of player personnel for the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League––representing the Philadelphia Eagles, Cecil Lammey of ESPN Radio in Denver representing the Broncos, Cheesehead TV's own Andrew Garda representing the New York Jets, Michael Schottey, Sigmund Bloom and Matt Miller all of Bleacher Report representing the Lions, Steelers and Chiefs respectively. And that's just to name a few.

Getting back to the selection of Hightower, we thought he fit the bill of the "best player available," a philosophy the Packers stick to almost religiously to procure new talent.

Hightower played primarily inside linebacker for the Crimson Tide and was a captain for arguably one of the best defenses in NCAA history in 2011, one that also won the national championship.

To add to his versatility, Hightower also was utilized as an edge pass rusher for Alabama and performed well enough to suggest that he could have a future as a 3-4 outside linebacker in professional football.

Whether he's a better inside or outside linebacker is something the Packers would have to find out once they bring him into town and see what kind of talent they have on their hands.

Hightower was simply too good to pass up. If the Packers do end up drafting him, it could be a case of "Pick him now, see where he fits in later."

We were ready to select South Carolina cornerback Stephon Gilmore, but he came off the board one pick before the Packers selected at 27th overall by the New England Patriots.

The other players we considered taking were Boise State outside linebacker Shea McClellin and Connecticut defensive lineman Kendall Reyes, but in the end, we didn't think either was as solid as Hightower.

The Minnesota Vikings offered us the seventh pick in the second round (39th overall) and the third pick in the fourth round (98 overall), which we considered because the Packers actually would have come out significantly ahead in the trade value chart, but we didn't think we'd get nearly as quality a player at 39 as we would have with Hightower.

The Packers still have major needs to fill on the defensive line, safety and perhaps even outside linebacker if Hightower plays only on the inside. Hopefully we'll be able to address those needs later in #MockFour.

This may seem greedy and, but I kinda want Shea in round 2. Cm3-Hawk (or even Smith)-Bishop-Hightower-Shea would be a great Psycho package LB corps and would make the Dline look better.

The more I read on Hightower the more I like him. If he's there I hope they take him.

This is pretty cool. I like the Hightower selection.

I'd take any of the three you were considering, though I would give a slight edge to McClellin. Wonder if TT's value in BIGs may point to a Reyes selection, if choosing between the three.

I'll take any SEC talent we can get on D, wherever they line up.

I think you meant to say MN's pick 35 and 98 = 668 to our 660...they don't have pick 39. I would have taken that trade if I felt I could get McClellin at 35. I would now have the luxury of using picks 59, 90, 98, and 123 to maybe pckg and take 1 or 2 targeted player(s). Or sit back and let the draft come to me knowing I have 7 of the first 133 picks.

BTW-Maybe they would have accepted picks 28 (660) and 90 (140) = 800 for their 35 (560) and 66 (260) = 820.

We would move down 7 but move up 24 places in the 3rd round.

I'm much more comfortable with Hightower than McClellin mainly because Hightower has competed in the SEC and McClellin in the MWC and because McClellin only BP'd 19 reps.

I would have to agree Bubba on the trade and McClellen, I think the SEC guys don't always fit so well in GB,

I like mcclellin.....he reminds me of Clay. Watch his highlights! Hightower or Baron would also be great to see in green n yellow!

Ok..Perfect pick in the first. Now see if we can move up in the second and take an OLB. DE is still a need but I believe the Packers picking up free agent D-lineman proves that TT will not go after one in the first few rounds.

We do not need DEs that can rush the passer if we have 3 LB that can do it from different angles. The Dline will just need to play the run and stuff the wholes like the 3-4 is designed.

Kudos on not trading down b/c you didn't think it made sense for the Packers. I've been following this mock from the beginning and I get the impression that some of the guys want to trade down just for the sake of having more turns to pick. I think it really slows things down.

Of course with 12 picks you'll see plenty of action anyway.

Great pick!! He will help!! Irvin in the 2nd with Hightower would be a 2 headed monster coming in!!

Great pick! Love Hightower. And it's a bonus we screwed the Vikings yet again, even if it's only a mock!
