Packers Start Making Roster Cuts, Vince Young Among Them

The question now becomes, what do the Packers do at the backup quarterback position?

The running list as confirmed by the folks at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and other reports:

  • QB Vince Young
  • CB Lloyce Means
  • FB Jonathan Amosa
  • S David Fulton
  • S Chaz Powell
  • OL Garth Gerhart
  • WR Charles Johnson
  • WR Tyrone Walker
  • OLB Donte Savage
  • OL Patrick Lewis
  • WR Myles White
  • OL Andrew Datko
  • TE D.J. Williams
  • TE Jake Stoneburner
  • RB Alex Green
  • TE Matthew Mulligan
  • CB James Nixon
  • OL Kevin Hughes
  • OLB Dezman Moses
  • ILB Terrell Manning
  • DL Jordan Miller
  • CB Brandon Smith

Obviously, the big news is the release of quarterback Vince Young who had been working as the Packers' top backup to Aaron Rodgers as recently as the final preseason game.

The question now becomes, where do the Packers go from here?

One option would be to go with B.J. Coleman, who has the advantage of knowing the Packers offense, but also looked like he has no business being operating an NFL offense at this point in his development.

The more likely option would either be for the Packers to work out a trade or pick up the best quarterback they can find on the waiver wire as teams across the NFL also trim their rosters today.

A lot of speculation has centered upon former Packers and current Raiders quarterback Matt Flynn, who had a less than impressive preseason showing out in Oakland?

The Packers could have interest in Flynn if the Raiders were to decide to make Terrelle Pryor their starter, but the Packers probably don't want to be on the hook for the two-year $11.5 million contract Flynn signed unless he'd agree to a restructured contract.

It's very possible the Raiders are still committed to Flynn as their starter anyway.

The release of wide receivers Tyrone Walker and Charles Johnson are also notable. There's been no word if Jeremy Ross has been cut, but he could have the inside track on the No. 5 wide receiver job.

I said I thought Coleman was the front runner for the backup job, and I was chastised. I guess they wanted a guy with a grasp of the playbook on the roster after all.

Must be something else going on with Vince Young. Hands down he was better than Coleman, considering that VY only had a month to learn the playbook. I don't think the Packers gave VY a fair chance here. Now we have to either bring in a veteran with zero knowledge of the playbook, zero preseason snaps or go with Coleman. I expected a bit more foresight from our genius Teddy T.

Also, Young's running would easily be countered by an LB spy in real games. He isn't particularly fast.

Two examples for you
1. Back shoulder throw to Ross down the sideline in the last preseason game. The entire Packers team cheered for that throw
2. Touch down throw to Amosa

I realize that these are only two examples, but VY was at a huge disadvantage with no OTAs, minicamp or better portion of Training camp to learn the playbook and get the timing right. Considering those factors I would say he was much better than Coleman.

I'm with packsmack on this one - the back shoulder throw didn't do much for me. He tossed it up high enough to turn what's supposed to be a low-risk throw into a 50/50 ball. It looked great that time because it worked, but he still did it wrong.

VY throwing motion could be less natural looking than a teenage girl with how he short arms it. MM never trusted VY to throw down the field. Not surprised he's not on the roster anymore despite how electric he is on his feet.

Pure insanity.

The backup will be Coleman or someone with zero experience in their system.

The shallowness and fragility of this roster is startling.

With their OLine, to have no option behind Rodgers is simply irresponsible.

Big slap in the face to VY and all of his Texas backers. HA! Just when he thinks he has won the position over Harrell, he gets cut in favor of who? No one! On top of that, Harrell lands another job within a matter of what - one day.

Packers probably thought Harrell would be sitting around, begging for a job if they needed him.

The day is not done. It's possible that Harrell gets cut and someone signs Young. After all, how many QBs are the Jets going to keep? Sanchez & Smith are certain to make the cut. McElroy is gone. Simms played reasonably well according to Jets observers. Harrell could make the cutdown if Sanchez can't play for a few weeks. Otherwise, i don't see the point of keeping him. But it's the Jets, so who knows?

McCoy will probably be looking for work as well. McCoy is not even as good as Harrell - Tebow is worse than both. Listened to a story on espn yesterday about how bad Flynn is and the fact the he made 17mil by playing well in only one game. Beyond that game Flynn was never a standout in practice or preseason. Based on the failures of all of the backups around here i am starting to wonder if its really that the backups are that bad or the OL and receivers lately are stinking it up. Harrell had way too many dropped passes and poor protection by the first sting OL in his last showing. Looking to see Rogers lead the way in Sacks again this year.

I disagree. I thought Flynn showed something in his preseason games. He took charge of the team & moved them downfield. He even scored. Didn't see much of that this preseason. And don't forget that there also things he didn't do that helped his cause. He didn't throw into triple coverage like Coleman, he didn't fumble like Young. He didn't fall on his face like Harrell.

He also played well when called upon in the regular season. Flynn is a much better QB than Coleman, Harrell or Young. Is he worth his contract? Probably not to the Packers. I'd be surprised if he came back.

If Rodgers goes down the season is over anyway.
BUT: Give me a Football team right now which has such a quality backup that they can compete for playoffs if the main guy goes down.

Maybe Flynn gets released by the Raiders and agress to come back as a backup (yes, I know, that's highly unrealistic, but one can still hope)

Best bet may be "Wrecks Grossman", with RJII and Cousin's he has to be available. He would be a huge upgrade as a backup for the Packers, he led the Bears to the Super Bowl and he always played well against some solid Packer defenses twice a year. If he was 3 inches taller he could be a starter, if he doesn't have a lane to see he becomes Cutler.

Surprises - Young...can't imagine going into the season with Coleman as the backup and hope there's something else planned. I would take almost every other cut vet over Coleman any day.

Mild surprises - Green and Mulligan...though I did think there was at least a decent chance of them being cut.

I can't imagine TT cutting VY unless he had a plan. I do not think they'll sign a player who doesn't know this offense. With the season starting in a week, MM and staff do not have the time to teach this offense from scratch. The only QB out there that would seem to fit the bill is Matt Flynn.

Let's put all this much-ado-about-nothing silliness over the importance of a back up quarterback. If your starting quarterback misses more than one game, the odds of you winning the Super Bowl are minute. Here are the games missed by starting qb's of the super bowl winners in the last decade.

2012 BaltimoreJ. Flacco 0
2011 NY GiantsE. Manning0
2010 Green BayA. Rodgers1
2009 N Orleans D. Brees1

2006 IndyP. Manning0

No idea. Maybe a dozen? Not sure what that has to do with the improved o-line, though.

"Better than last year."

Sort of like saying "we'll I may have gotten punched in the face but at least I didn't get kicked in the crotch, like last year."

Injuries happen. You cannot fault TT for failing to see that Bulaga would go down. Oh wait, HE DID. That's why he drafted Bakhtiari.

Running the ball with Lacy will help that so much.Pass happy Packers were much too easy to game plan against.Giants and 49ers knew this team all too much having played them for the past few years

I'm not convinced that adding Lacy, flipping the guards and starting a rookie at LT will improve the running game.

by itself it probably doesn't. Now if we add more of a short and intermediate passing game to draw the LBs back from the line, that might make some lanes to run through for 3-4 yards.

Adding Lacy and feeding him 20 carries a game will make teams respect the run enough to hold the LB for a 1/2 sec. Just enough time for Finley and Cobb to get good releases on the LOS. That was shown vs StL. By Lacy's 4th carry he already was having an effect on the LB allowing Finley to get open down the seam. If they don't respect Lacy to start the year they will when he starts running consistently against those 6 man fronts.

Well Bahktiari and Barclay SHOULD be the backup OT's! Kinda hurts when you lose what amounts to your starting OT's and possible starting C. Packers are w/o Bulaga, Sherrod and Tretter. Take 3 of the top OL off SF and their OL wouldn't look to good either. Especially if you take the starting OT's!

So Boyd made it? Wow. So that makes 7 DL?

Not terribly surprised about Manning. He was invisible.

And huge congrats to Jolly...it hasn't been in doubt for a couple of weeks, imo, but glad to see it confirmed.

I honestly cannot see them going into the season with only 3 RBs (one of whom is Starks). I wonder who would go to make room for another RB.

Maybe they'll wait a day or two for other teams to finalizes their rosters a bit before cutting someone like Boyd, in the hopes of more easily getting him on the PS.

Theyd be crazy to cut boyd. You dont see too many nimble big guys, he'd never make it to the PS.

George blanda did it. So can favre. Bring him back. He's better now than any free agent quarterback. Few would doubt that

Im thinking they sign Mcknight. Also i guess there goes our only decent blocking tight end in mulligan. Cutting williams was a mercy killing. Dude showed nothing in 3 seasons. Quarless??? Thats a helluva shaky basket to put your eggs in...this is getting interesting.

Addendum: Guess theyre hoping bostick develops as receiver...but not much of an in-line blocker at this point.

The Packers are a SB contender, nuff said. Armchair gm's can second guess all day, we don't field a team. I lived through the 70's, 80's enjoy the ride. Relax, we could be Lions' fans.

Just having a QB does not make you a SB contender.
That's all this team has.

If all the stars align we may be lucky enough to see them get contend for a playoff spot.

Actually having a Stud QB makes you a playoff team every year. And if you make the playoffs and have a Stud QB your chances of winning a SB go up exponentially.

When was the last timevabteam just a good passing game and nothing else won the SB?

I honestly do not have confidence in any position group.
Zero depth.
QB. Stud... No one behind him
OL is awful
RB an injury prone rookie leads the way
TE a head case with bobble hands leads the way
WR a dynamic player plus a bunch of system guys
DL. Ok - looks like they have some depth here
ILB. horrible
OLB. astud and a bunch of journeymen
CB Shield I like, House is bad, Williams is bad, Hayward will miss at least the first 3 games, Bush... Ha ha ha, I'd love Hyde if he wasn't so slow
S sans Burnett this might be the worst position group on the team
P. stud
K. Yikes
