Packers Start Making Roster Cuts, Vince Young Among Them

Packers Start Making Roster Cuts, Vince Young Among Them

The running list as confirmed by the folks at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and other reports:

  • QB Vince Young
  • CB Lloyce Means
  • FB Jonathan Amosa
  • S David Fulton
  • S Chaz Powell
  • OL Garth Gerhart
  • WR Charles Johnson
  • WR Tyrone Walker
  • OLB Donte Savage
  • OL Patrick Lewis
  • WR Myles White
  • OL Andrew Datko
  • TE D.J. Williams
  • TE Jake Stoneburner
  • RB Alex Green
  • TE Matthew Mulligan
  • CB James Nixon
  • OL Kevin Hughes
  • OLB Dezman Moses
  • ILB Terrell Manning
  • DL Jordan Miller
  • CB Brandon Smith

Obviously, the big news is the release of quarterback Vince Young who had been working as the Packers' top backup to Aaron Rodgers as recently as the final preseason game.

The question now becomes, where do the Packers go from here?

One option would be to go with B.J. Coleman, who has the advantage of knowing the Packers offense, but also looked like he has no business being operating an NFL offense at this point in his development.

The more likely option would either be for the Packers to work out a trade or pick up the best quarterback they can find on the waiver wire as teams across the NFL also trim their rosters today.

A lot of speculation has centered upon former Packers and current Raiders quarterback Matt Flynn, who had a less than impressive preseason showing out in Oakland?

The Packers could have interest in Flynn if the Raiders were to decide to make Terrelle Pryor their starter, but the Packers probably don't want to be on the hook for the two-year $11.5 million contract Flynn signed unless he'd agree to a restructured contract.

It's very possible the Raiders are still committed to Flynn as their starter anyway.

The release of wide receivers Tyrone Walker and Charles Johnson are also notable. There's been no word if Jeremy Ross has been cut, but he could have the inside track on the No. 5 wide receiver job.

I said I thought Coleman was the front runner for the backup job, and I was chastised. I guess they wanted a guy with a grasp of the playbook on the roster after all.

Cow42's picture

Regardless of whether or not the guy can actually play football, I guess.

PadLevel's picture

Must be something else going on with Vince Young. Hands down he was better than Coleman, considering that VY only had a month to learn the playbook. I don't think the Packers gave VY a fair chance here. Now we have to either bring in a veteran with zero knowledge of the playbook, zero preseason snaps or go with Coleman. I expected a bit more foresight from our genius Teddy T.

Evan's picture

Hands down he was better? That's silly. Equally bad, I'd say.

packsmack25's picture

If you can give me any examples, other than running, where VY did something impressive, I'll give you a dollar.

chicago hooligan's picture

Also, Young's running would easily be countered by an LB spy in real games. He isn't particularly fast.

PadLevel's picture

Two examples for you
1. Back shoulder throw to Ross down the sideline in the last preseason game. The entire Packers team cheered for that throw
2. Touch down throw to Amosa

I realize that these are only two examples, but VY was at a huge disadvantage with no OTAs, minicamp or better portion of Training camp to learn the playbook and get the timing right. Considering those factors I would say he was much better than Coleman.

packsmack25's picture

Neither of those throws were impressive. Sorry.

some guy's picture

I'm with packsmack on this one - the back shoulder throw didn't do much for me. He tossed it up high enough to turn what's supposed to be a low-risk throw into a 50/50 ball. It looked great that time because it worked, but he still did it wrong.

Beep's picture

VY throwing motion could be less natural looking than a teenage girl with how he short arms it. MM never trusted VY to throw down the field. Not surprised he's not on the roster anymore despite how electric he is on his feet.

Barutan Seijin's picture

I think Young would be the number two without those fumbles on Thursday night.

CowKiller's picture

I hate your guts Cow, you are no Packer fan.

Cow42's picture

Pure insanity.

The backup will be Coleman or someone with zero experience in their system.

The shallowness and fragility of this roster is startling.

With their OLine, to have no option behind Rodgers is simply irresponsible.

BrianD's picture

The Jets won't be hanging on to Graham Harrell, he was signed for depth purposes for the final preseason game. There's a chance he'll end up back in Green Bay by tomorrow.

Cow43's picture

Graham Harrell sucks, BrianD

Cow43's picture

I have to agree with you on this one 42. I,ve been scratching my head all day about it.
If Rodgers goes down, and Coleman comes in, the offense will be almost unwatchable.

ILChzHead's picture

Does it really matter who the backup is? Rodgers goes down, might as well get a better pick anyway. Same goes with Brady Brees, the Mannings.

fatalflaw's picture

EXACTLY my thoughts!

Ct Sharpe Cheddar's picture

You just need someone to fill in or a game or 2.If he was out longer than that this team and many other teams would not contend for a championship,Denver ,Pats,Saints etc

Cow42's picture

That's the problem. The Packers don't even have anyone who can fill in for a quarter, let alone a game or two.

Lucky953's picture

How about one of the two backups we played against who looked pretty good: Taylor Bray (KC) or Ryan Lindley (AZ)?

Tundraboy's picture

yeh

Bears love cheddar biscuits's picture

We get it. The sky is falling. Its just football. Sit back and watch. If you dont like what you see turn off the tv.

Cow42's picture

Nah. I won't turn it off. I'm kind of into watching car wrecks. This season should be good for that.

I'm beginning to question whether my 6 win prediction might have been a bit optimistic.

Ruppert's picture

There's still time, Cow. Go ahead...drop your win prediction down one or two.

MarkinMadison's picture

Because they don't have a backup QB, you need to drop them another two down to 4 wins? THAT's insanity. I asked you to put your money where you mouth is last year, and you were wrong. Don't make me drop it on you again.

Cow42's picture

I didn't make a schedule prediction last year.
I would not have gone with 6 wins last year. Last year's schedule was too easy. This year's schedule is not.

keeley2's picture

Ya know cow, it's been proven that people who are constantly negative in their thinking tend to live shorter lives. Just sayin'.

fatalflaw's picture

I've actually read a study that suggests just the opposite! I guess with the info age you can back up most any argument you want.

pooch's picture

The o line is a concern, but we have not had Lacy in the backfield with Rodgers for any length of time other than Ram game were the offense looked most effective

endo daze's picture

Hughes is a OL keeper....shocked at WR Walker and White.
LB DL and TE cuts next...Dont think Quarless and DJ Williams make it...hard to drop too is J Miller or Boyd...trade talks and wavier picks are needed for OL RB and QB backups....TE and LB for KC's Bray overheard.

Barutan Seijin's picture

I thought White was terrible. Speed doesn't really matter if you don't catch the ball. Didn't see anything special from Walker.

You have to give them a reason to keep you on the team. These guys didn't. They'll be available for the practice squad.

Mrweit27's picture

Huber reports, DJ Williams cut
There goes trade chance

Juice Maloose's picture

As if anyone was really going to trade for him.

calpackerfan's picture

Big slap in the face to VY and all of his Texas backers. HA! Just when he thinks he has won the position over Harrell, he gets cut in favor of who? No one! On top of that, Harrell lands another job within a matter of what - one day.

Packers probably thought Harrell would be sitting around, begging for a job if they needed him.

Barutan Seijin's picture

The day is not done. It's possible that Harrell gets cut and someone signs Young. After all, how many QBs are the Jets going to keep? Sanchez & Smith are certain to make the cut. McElroy is gone. Simms played reasonably well according to Jets observers. Harrell could make the cutdown if Sanchez can't play for a few weeks. Otherwise, i don't see the point of keeping him. But it's the Jets, so who knows?

redlights's picture

There will be a day or three of churning of the bottom of the roster.

Tolzien and Tebow are available.

I'll duck down now, as the arrows will fly!

calpackerfan's picture

McCoy will probably be looking for work as well. McCoy is not even as good as Harrell - Tebow is worse than both. Listened to a story on espn yesterday about how bad Flynn is and the fact the he made 17mil by playing well in only one game. Beyond that game Flynn was never a standout in practice or preseason. Based on the failures of all of the backups around here i am starting to wonder if its really that the backups are that bad or the OL and receivers lately are stinking it up. Harrell had way too many dropped passes and poor protection by the first sting OL in his last showing. Looking to see Rogers lead the way in Sacks again this year.

Barutan Seijin's picture

I disagree. I thought Flynn showed something in his preseason games. He took charge of the team & moved them downfield. He even scored. Didn't see much of that this preseason. And don't forget that there also things he didn't do that helped his cause. He didn't throw into triple coverage like Coleman, he didn't fumble like Young. He didn't fall on his face like Harrell.

He also played well when called upon in the regular season. Flynn is a much better QB than Coleman, Harrell or Young. Is he worth his contract? Probably not to the Packers. I'd be surprised if he came back.

Christian's picture

If Rodgers goes down the season is over anyway.
BUT: Give me a Football team right now which has such a quality backup that they can compete for playoffs if the main guy goes down.

Maybe Flynn gets released by the Raiders and agress to come back as a backup (yes, I know, that's highly unrealistic, but one can still hope)

redlights's picture

Redskins; Patriots.

Ct Sharpe Cheddar's picture

Redskins maybe not the Patriots

fatalflaw's picture

I most regret Stoneburner, has the coolest name by far.

Mrweit27's picture

Didn't see alex green cut.

jack in jersey city's picture

wow! alex green is gone? i didn't see that coming!

trvs's picture

Agreed! I felt he had a much better shot then Starks, or even Franklin at this point.

Lou's picture

Green had absolutely no instinct in a conventional pro offense. He was outstanding in Hawaii in the spread, he always operated in space. You just can't teach instinct.

Phatgzus's picture

"you can't teach instinct."

O Rly?

Stroh's picture

I don't think instincts can be taught either. Learned by playing yes, but taught? No. Can't learn instincts in meetings or a classroom, but you can gain instincts by actually playing the game, by experience.

Brooklyn81's picture

Starks is the better runner

Ct Sharpe Cheddar's picture

he's a bruiser when healthy

jack in jersey city's picture

looks like mulligan is going to be cut too

packsmack25's picture

Mulligan cut. That's all I've got to say.

Mrweit27's picture

What the F. Do you thnk it was for compensatory draft next year. Maybe we get two?

packsmack25's picture

Don't think you get compensation for guys you cut. Especially if they never played for you.

Mrweit27's picture

We let jennings and walden go. If we kept mulligan, that negates one pick because he was a free agent. Either that, or it means a higher pick for the jennings and walden

Brian Carriveau's picture

It wouldn't have mattered. Mulligan was a street free agent.

Evan's picture

Just like I said!

Mrweit27's picture

Might have been what you meant, but not what you said

Evan's picture

I know, I was kidding.

packsmack25's picture

Haha +1

Mrweit27's picture

:-) i didn't realize mulligan was a street free agent.

SCFPackFan's picture

Never understood why people were calling Mulligan a lock. Dude showed nothing in preseason.

packsmack25's picture

Well to be fair, you kind of want a guy like Mulligan to be invisible when you watch games.

chicago hooligan's picture

Finley also looking better in the run game suddenly.

Mrweit27's picture

Mulligan was insurance if quarless wasn't healthy. Guess this means he is., plus he can catch which i guess mulligan wasnt going to be doing much of so i guess it makes sense. Plus, we save 700K i think

Ct Sharpe Cheddar's picture

Someone will pick up Alex Green.Hey if it gets to out of hand if Rodgers goes down we can always call up Hattiesburg Missisipi.Desperate people do desperate things

Ct Sharpe Cheddar's picture

Bring Back B for Back up .You heard it here 1st

redlights's picture

I'd rather they call West Monroe, LA and ask for Phil Robertson; played ahead of Terry Bradshaw in college. At least we'd have a prayer...!!!!!

jack in jersey city's picture

dezmon moses- GONE! damn!

Lou's picture

Big surprise last year, looked like he was running in cement (turf toe) this year. How about Zombo playing for KC, too bad he had the injury bug in Green Bay, he has potential.

Morgan Mundane's picture

Wow. I thought Green would be ahead of Starks? Didn't see Kuehn's name. Wondered why we would keep a fullback when the O line can't block?

I agree, if Rogers goes down say in game one, the pack goes 0-16 and ties the Lions. I mean there is no team without Rogers and if you pick up another QB, when does he learn the playbook and get time to practice?

Cow43's picture

A fullback was kept for the sole purpose of blocking.

VApackerfan's picture

and running on first downs

2011 Draft:

Awesome- Cobb

Jury still out- Sherrod, House and Taylor

Oops-D.J. Williams, Caleb Schlauderaff, D.J. Smith, Ricky Elmore, , Lawrence Guy,

jack in jersey city's picture

yeah, 2011 was not ted's best year!

Jamie's picture

Looks almost as bad as SF's 2012 draft.

Mrweit27's picture

Only 3 left. Still no Miller, Boyd, taylor, coleman.....

Mrweit27's picture

B Smith either

PackRat's picture

Alex Green's role coming out of Hawaii was to be the third down back...Commitment to Jonathan Franklin out of the backfield (he did have A nice catch and run this preseason) sealed Green's fate-- HOWEVER, JFs blocking atrocious so far--so only plays against teams that we can handle the rush.

I bleed Green More's picture

Bush anyone, please make my year.

jack in jersey city's picture

ain't gonna happen

hayward4president's picture

You will be missed Stoneburner haha

Lucky953's picture

"Sources report". Means, Nixon, Johnson, White targeted for PS

calpackerfan's picture

why not cut Coleman and put him back on the practice squad? no one is picking that guy up and you really dont want him seeing the field anytime soon.

Mrweit27's picture

Smith cut. 2 more to go..... Boyd, miller, coleman, taylor?????????? Do we actually take 8 d lineman?????

jack in jersey city's picture

i haven't seen anything on smith yet

jim's picture

link?

Lou's picture

Best bet may be "Wrecks Grossman", with RJII and Cousin's he has to be available. He would be a huge upgrade as a backup for the Packers, he led the Bears to the Super Bowl and he always played well against some solid Packer defenses twice a year. If he was 3 inches taller he could be a starter, if he doesn't have a lane to see he becomes Cutler.

Jamie's picture

Surprises - Young...can't imagine going into the season with Coleman as the backup and hope there's something else planned. I would take almost every other cut vet over Coleman any day.

Mild surprises - Green and Mulligan...though I did think there was at least a decent chance of them being cut.

jh9's picture

I can't imagine TT cutting VY unless he had a plan. I do not think they'll sign a player who doesn't know this offense. With the season starting in a week, MM and staff do not have the time to teach this offense from scratch. The only QB out there that would seem to fit the bill is Matt Flynn.

Stroh's picture

So Flynn's gonna give up a starting job in Oak to be a backup in GB? That's ridiculous!

Point Packer's picture

Trade for Matt Hassleback.

rymetyme's picture

damn Point Packer.... I think you might be on to something! Hasselbeck is a much more feasible and workable deal. Hasselbeck would get a shot at another ring and backing up a legend (again). Not a bad situation.

greenngold's picture

Let's put all this much-ado-about-nothing silliness over the importance of a back up quarterback. If your starting quarterback misses more than one game, the odds of you winning the Super Bowl are minute. Here are the games missed by starting qb's of the super bowl winners in the last decade.

2012 BaltimoreJ. Flacco 0
2011 NY GiantsE. Manning0
2010 Green BayA. Rodgers1
2009 N Orleans D. Brees1
2008 PittsburghB. Roethlesberger0
2007 NY GiantsE. Manning0
2006 IndyP. Manning0
2005 PittsburghB. Roethlesberger4
2004 New Eng.T. Brady0
2003 New Eng.T. Brady0

Hmmm. Methinks a rather strong pattern is shown.

Cow42's picture

Moral of the story? Protect your QB.

Are the Packers doing that with...

Bakhtiari
Sitton
EDS
Lang
Barclay

?

Evan's picture

Better than last year.

calpackerfan's picture

not so sure - rogers has played how many series this preseason?

Evan's picture

No idea. Maybe a dozen? Not sure what that has to do with the improved o-line, though.

Cow42's picture

"Better than last year."

Sort of like saying "we'll I may have gotten punched in the face but at least I didn't get kicked in the crotch, like last year."

Evan's picture

If that helps you...but improvement is improvement.

MarkinMadison's picture

Injuries happen. You cannot fault TT for failing to see that Bulaga would go down. Oh wait, HE DID. That's why he drafted Bakhtiari.

Ct Sharpe Cheddar's picture

Running the ball with Lacy will help that so much.Pass happy Packers were much too easy to game plan against.Giants and 49ers knew this team all too much having played them for the past few years

Cow42's picture

I'm not convinced that adding Lacy, flipping the guards and starting a rookie at LT will improve the running game.

TommyG's picture

by itself it probably doesn't. Now if we add more of a short and intermediate passing game to draw the LBs back from the line, that might make some lanes to run through for 3-4 yards.

Stroh's picture

Adding Lacy and feeding him 20 carries a game will make teams respect the run enough to hold the LB for a 1/2 sec. Just enough time for Finley and Cobb to get good releases on the LOS. That was shown vs StL. By Lacy's 4th carry he already was having an effect on the LB allowing Finley to get open down the seam. If they don't respect Lacy to start the year they will when he starts running consistently against those 6 man fronts.

Stroh's picture

Well Bahktiari and Barclay SHOULD be the backup OT's! Kinda hurts when you lose what amounts to your starting OT's and possible starting C. Packers are w/o Bulaga, Sherrod and Tretter. Take 3 of the top OL off SF and their OL wouldn't look to good either. Especially if you take the starting OT's!

Ct Sharpe Cheddar's picture

2010 Rodgers missed 1 and a half games (Detriot) but we get the idea

Evan's picture

So Boyd made it? Wow. So that makes 7 DL?

Not terribly surprised about Manning. He was invisible.

And huge congrats to Jolly...it hasn't been in doubt for a couple of weeks, imo, but glad to see it confirmed.

hayward4president's picture

Dennis Dixon ...book it haha

Evan's picture

I honestly cannot see them going into the season with only 3 RBs (one of whom is Starks). I wonder who would go to make room for another RB.

Maybe they'll wait a day or two for other teams to finalizes their rosters a bit before cutting someone like Boyd, in the hopes of more easily getting him on the PS.

Bears love cheddar biscuits's picture

Theyd be crazy to cut boyd. You dont see too many nimble big guys, he'd never make it to the PS.

Fi crane's picture

George blanda did it. So can favre. Bring him back. He's better now than any free agent quarterback. Few would doubt that

Bears love cheddar biscuits's picture

Im thinking they sign Mcknight. Also i guess there goes our only decent blocking tight end in mulligan. Cutting williams was a mercy killing. Dude showed nothing in 3 seasons. Quarless??? Thats a helluva shaky basket to put your eggs in...this is getting interesting.

Bears love cheddar biscuits's picture

Addendum: Guess theyre hoping bostick develops as receiver...but not much of an in-line blocker at this point.

4thand1's picture

The Packers are a SB contender, nuff said. Armchair gm's can second guess all day, we don't field a team. I lived through the 70's, 80's enjoy the ride. Relax, we could be Lions' fans.

Cow42's picture

Just having a QB does not make you a SB contender.
That's all this team has.

If all the stars align we may be lucky enough to see them get contend for a playoff spot.

Stroh's picture

Actually having a Stud QB makes you a playoff team every year. And if you make the playoffs and have a Stud QB your chances of winning a SB go up exponentially.

Tundraboy's picture

Exactly. Lots to be grateful for and reasons to be very excited this year.

Cow42's picture

I guess I just don't see it.

When was the last timevabteam just a good passing game and nothing else won the SB?

fish and crane's picture

"all this team has?" Really Cow, you can do better than that. You may be getting tired...

Cow42's picture

I honestly do not have confidence in any position group.
Zero depth.
QB. Stud... No one behind him
OL is awful
RB an injury prone rookie leads the way
TE a head case with bobble hands leads the way
WR a dynamic player plus a bunch of system guys
DL. Ok - looks like they have some depth here
ILB. horrible
OLB. astud and a bunch of journeymen
CB Shield I like, House is bad, Williams is bad, Hayward will miss at least the first 3 games, Bush... Ha ha ha, I'd love Hyde if he wasn't so slow
S sans Burnett this might be the worst position group on the team
P. stud
K. Yikes
