Packers Snap Counts Versus The Lions - Week Two

The snap counts on offense were very predictable.  However, there were some changes on defense.

The Packers had five players who were inactive, including Deguara and Vernon Scott for health reason.  Shemar Jean-Charles, newly acquired LaDarius Hamilton, Jake Hanson and Jack Heflin were healthy scratches.  Curiously, the Packers chose to elevate Equanimeous St. Brown from the practice squad as the seventh wide receiver rather than Heflin or a safety.  The Packers played quite a bit of dime (33%) against the Lions despite having just three safeties active.

Player Snaps % STs

Jenkins 65 100
Runyan 65 100 5 - 22%
Myers 65 100
Newman 65 100 5 - 22%

Dafney 29 45 11 - 48%
Tonyan 28 43

The offensive line fared pretty well even with Runyan replacing Lucas Patrick at left guard.  The line did not allow a lot of pressure, and most of the hurries and quarterback hits came after a reasonable amount of time had elapsed since the snap of the ball.  The Packers rushed the ball 14 times for 60 yards in the first half, good for a 4.3 yard average, with a long of just 9 yards.  A couple of runs went nowhere, but most rushes got positive yardage.  Dillon rushed for 3, 4 and 4 yards, for example.  The Packers ran the ball three times on the first drive of the second half for 14 yards.  After that, rushing yards became a little tougher to come by.  The Packers finished with 31 carries for 96 yards, a 3.1 yard average (including three kneel downs by Love for negative three yards).

Aaron Rodgers completed 8 of 10 passes for 75 yards in the first half.  Aaron Jones caught 4 passes, but two of them were for touchdowns.  Adams caught 3 for 29 yards and Tonyan caught one for 19 yards.  Rodgers heated up in the second half, completing 14 of 17 passes for 180 yards, including a beautiful 50 yard bomb to Adams and a laser to Tonyan for a touchdown.  Rodgers threw 2 big time and 2 turnover-worthy passes, per Pro Football Focus.  Adams played defense on one of the questionable passes.  Rodgers targeted Valdes-Scantling 4 times but did not connect.  Rodgers overthrew him at least twice.  Rodgers finished with a 145.6 passer rating.

The Packers seemed to be attacking Alex Anzalone by having Tonyan run routes down the seam.  Tonyan finished with 3 receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown, and also drew a penalty.  Marcedes Lewis threw some nice blocks, including a block sealing the edge for Jones on his touchdown run.

Amari Rodgers played only on special teams.  Dafney played a lot of snaps, even more than Tonyan.

Player Snaps % STs

Amos 57 100 2 - 9%
Alexander 57 100
Savage 57 100
King 56 98
Stokes 44 77 11 - 48%
Sullivan 18 32 6 - 26%
Black 2 4 16 - 70%
Yiadom     18 - 78%

Campbell 57 100
P. Smith 46 81 3 - 13%
Gary 44 77
Barnes 25 44 6 - 26%
Garvin 13 23 5 - 22%
Rivers 11 19 13 - 57%
Burks 2 4 18 - 78%
Summers     18 - 78%
McDuffie     10 - 43%

Clark 48 84
Lowry 34 60 5 - 22%
Keke 32 56 3 - 13%
Lancaster 18 32 8 - 35%
Slaton 6 11 3 - 13%
22

The Lions rushed 14 times for 60 yards for a 4.3 yard per carry average in the first half, exactly the same as the Packers.  They had a long rush of 12 yards.  The Lions rushed 5 times for 48 yards in the second half, but Goff scrambled 3 times for 43 of those yards.  The two rushes by Swift gained just 5 yards.  I would have sworn that the Packers run defense in the first half was much worse than Detroit's, but the numbers indicate otherwise.  Still, the defensive linemen as a group did not have a good first half.

Jared Goff had a fine first half, completing 13 of 16 passes for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns, good for a 141.9 passer rating.  The Packers did not generate enough pressure.  Matt LaFleur said that he told Joe Barry to either play coverage or get after the quarterback because playing man and sending four was not getting any pressure (per Tom Silverstein).  The first half summary does not list any tackles for loss or quarterback hits in the first half.  The Lions had four possessions in the first half and scored two touchdowns and a field goal.  The Lions had a false start, an offensive holding call, and intentional grounding to compel them to punt.

The Packers did apply more pressure in the second half, finishing with 6 quarterback hits, with 2 by Gary, and 1 each by Garvin, King, Clark, Preston Smith.  Garvin's pressure led to a pass that was intercepted by Campbell.  Goff also fumbled twice, losing one of them.  He did manage to complete 13 of 20 passes for 109 yards in the second half, but the mistakes caused Detroit to implode.

Campbell had 13 tackles (10 solo), plus the interception.  Amos had 9 solo tackles.  Eric Stokes is the big story.  He had one solo tackle and 2 passes defensed.  More importantly, he increased his snaps from 8 against the Saints (13%) to 44 (77%) against Detroit.  It came at the expense of Sullivan and Yiadom, not Kevin King.

Per Pro Football Focus, the Packers played dime personnel one third of the time.  Amos and Savage played every snap while Black played just two snaps.  The Packers played 3.07 CBs/play.  The Packers played 5.11 DBs/play, which is up from 4.61 last week.  They only played 1.47 ILBs per play on average.  The Packers played 2.42 true defensive linemen per play, just under last week's 2.5 number.

As a final note, Jace Sternberger is scheduled to come off the exempt list today.  The Packers will have to decide what to do with him.  They would have to make a roster activate Sternberger on the 53-man roster.

In terms of pure snap counts, the two biggest winners were Stokes as noted in the article and Runyan. I chose a photo of Stokes because I think his usage is more important and because Runyan's usage might and probably was due to injury. Patrick played just on STs - field goals and extra points. Amari Rodgers did not get any snaps. Did Tonyan leave the game or get injured?

Kevin King got burned a little but played almost every snap. Barnes went down. Lancaster and Slaton both lost snap share.

All stats are nflgsis unless otherwise noted.

Help me on this a little bit - if Patrick was injured, why did he play STs? Why not just rest him?

Probably wanted to ease him back after a concussion and have him for emergency purposes. It’s not the first time that they have taken that approach with a guy returning from concussion.

Very happy Lancaster is losing snaps - he was awful last night. On a third and one for the Lions, Ragnow (Lions center) drove Lancaster four yards backward and then planted him on his butt. Needless to say the Lions made their first down with a five yard running play right behind Ragnow. Ragnow is a very good center, but on a third and one, you would think our NT could anchor down better than that.

This DL will cost the Packers any shot at a Super Bowl. I am a Gute supporter, but he has all but ignored the DL for three years and it has cost the Packers dearly.

On any third or fourth and ones, why isn't Slaton right in the middle. If nothing else, he's not getting pushed back 4 yards...

I'm not going to argue about Lancaster, per se, but Ragnow is a pretty good center. He'll get the most of many matchups.

In the end, Lions management is rebuilding this team from the lines out. With the draft capital they got in the Stafford trade, it might pay off. This management unit might actually know what it's doing--even if Campbell is a basket case.

I agree Ragnow is good. So why didn't the Packers put Clark or maybe Slaton over him to discourage an easy run up the gut for a first down? Watching Lancaster get blown off the LOS for an easy first down is just dumb.

I wonder if the Packers put Stokes and King on the Perimeter and use Jaire in the slot to match up with Deebo Samuels. Deebo has 285 receiving yards, Kittle 95, and the next guy has 36. Raheem Mostert is out for the season, though their RB, Elijah Mitchell is rolling along with 146 yards in two games.

They've got Garoppolo and Trey Lance, so there is some opportunity for Barry to figure something out.

MItchell made hay against the Lions in week 1 but was unimpressive against Philly in week 2 (2.5 ypc on close to 20 carries). The key is to find a way to make Garoppolo beat you. Deebo is a big play guy...they've got to find a way to keep him under wraps.

It was my understanding that the Packers were going to play Jaire in the slot at times as that is what the new DC has done previously when he was with the Rams. That should help the GB defense against SF next week.

I thought Stokes did a pretty good job last night and got some very good experience as well. I was impressed with Campbell as well.

Barry does not know his personnel, and will not have a 'feel' for this defense till mid-season. One of the many curses of a very short training camp. That said, it sure looked like Johnny Gary was calling the shots for the defense second half.

Heflin is on the roster, he doesn’t need to be elevated. Barry just needs to get him activated as part of his game plan.

I am baffled as to why they elevated ESB. Taylor could have had his handful of snaps without any impact. The only thing I can think of is that they wanted him on the field with Taylor for some ST snaps. I note that the coverage unit was poor anyway.

I think that the Packers wanted to let ESB play in the same game as his brother. Also, he has played some in the slot before and the Packers might have wanted him there if the game plan was not working against two high.

So why do the professional coaches who spend 50 hours a week with these guys continue to place more value on Lowry and Lancaster than they do on Heflin? I mean, the self-appointed cognoscenti clearly don’t agree. Why do you think that is?

I acknowledge that Heflin might be worse than Lowry, and perhaps worse than Keke. He might be worse than Lancaster and/or Slaton, though they are more pure NTs.

I guess I just find the bar to be pretty low. Limbo anyone?

Here’s what I know:

These really big guys on the DL never look as good in September as they do in December. Be patient. It takes a while for them, but they get harder to move as the season wears on.

Any injury to any of the guys ahead of Heflin opens the door. As it is, the defensive line group of Clark, Lowry, Lancaster, and Keke is 29-9. It helps hold a majority of opponents below the league average in scoring (24.8), just like they did again last night.

Perhaps the defensive line isn’t that important, perhaps our guys are better than they’re given credit for. I think it’s some of both.

As regards the limbo gif………I think I knew her mother.

What about Sullivan. Looks like he is below King.

Stokes looks good. Two fourth down pass breakups. King would not have been able to do either of those. When you are close enough to contest passes, good t hings happen.

Defense is not playing well. Even the Lions with a new defensive staff looked more ready. And it does not appear the DL tries to penetrate, but rather slide along the line. What gives??

It certainly wasn’t pretty at times, not dominating and it took some great throws by Rodgers, but they did the job and beat the predicted spread. They did that against a bad team which is important to do generally and especially after last weeks debacle.

The D will have to get better if they want to play competitively at San Fran Sunday night. At one point, I don’t remember which announcer stated in the first half or beginning of 2nd that Goff had the most average time to throw in his career. Mlf to Barry, its ok to blitz occasionally. The game sure changed when they did in the second half. The reality is we cannot put enough pressure on the QB with four regularly, so I suspect each game to be different but blitzing will have to be a part of our ongoing packages.

TGR, I agree for the San Fran game they might move Jaire into the slot. I liked Stokes aggressive play, but am a bit concerned about him getting handsy. Nothing was called, but the possibility is there. Campell, gave up a TD to Hockenson, but he had decent coverage and I think he is the best all around ILB we’ve had in awhile.

Looks like we have a kick returner in Ervin. This will help in keeping teams from doing the high short kickoff. Ervin is an exciting player and expect him to get more PT as the year progresses.

Now, let’s go out West and get the monkey off our back!

I think you mean Hill not Ervin as the returner.

I will take Stokes on the perimeter every time. He will make mistakes but he makes plays too. That’s all you can ask of most CB 2s, that it not be a given. King did have one good break up, but which would you bet on if the two?

As to Jaire in the middle, against many teams I would hate that as a regular ploy with a rookie and King on the outside. A good QB could have a field day. Against SF it might be a good ploy, however, as long as Barry actually tries to get some pressure.

Oops, yes I meant Hill. Regarding Jaire, I agree his best place is boundary, but the San Fran game, since there best playmakers play the middle of the field it might make sense. I also think they might do it based on San Frans alignment on any certain play. I agree Stokes over King, especially the way King is playing so far this year. Without pressure it won’t matter where anyone plays, we will be in for a long night.

CW…I just read a stat, unsure if accurate, but it stated the following on King vs Stokes.

King - 6 targets - 5 catches - 133 yards. (Great stats if your the receiver)
Stokes - 5 targets - 1 catch - 5 yards

Yes, I’ll take Stokes. It also seemed like Stokes played closer to the LOS compared to King.

Green Bay started to take away the short routes in the third when they got the lead, both Strokes and Alexander were in off cover, King was in cover in the slot to take away the slant and curl after the Lions went away from the run. Both P. Smith and Gray went in line to cover the gaps and rush Geoff.

Thoughts:

*It's good to see some of the young guys getting snaps:
Runyan, Stokes, Myers, Dafney, Garvin, Hill, Slayton, these guys will be a big part of the Packers future and it's good to see them getting playing time!

*After a rough start King settled down and actually played the slot against bigger receivers while Stokes took his place outside and made plays!

*Campbell was all over the place last night and looks to take more of Barnes snaps moving forward, he's what Kirksey should have been last season!

*It was good to see Cobb make a couple of clutch catches in limited action, he will be a factor this season

*Adams is going to catch a lot of balls again this season

*Ditto for Tonyan

*Rodgers is still Rodgers, yes week one was a fluke and Rodgers played within the offense for the most part

*Aaron Jones can smell the end zone!

*Newman had a few rough plays, but he is going to be a good one

*Bakhtari - Jenkins - Myers - Newman - Turner, this is going to be a damn good Offensive Line moving forward!

*Special Teams: So far so good

*Barry: His highlight of the night was smashing his face into Stokes helmet, classic! Get the man an ice pack :)

*Love: It was good to see him get on the field even if it was just for kneel down time, baby steps!

*A needed win and more importantly a division win!

GO PACK!!

Garvin actually had a pressure that resulted in the Campbell interception. Could his confidence be rising sufficiently to allow him to turn the power we hear about into effective play? That would be big for us if so.

King in the slot against what the Lions had might have been Barry’s best idea. Whether that’s going to work against teams like SF is more dubious.

Thanks TGR for getting this out so promptly again. Much appreciated.

IDK. PFR shows zero for targets and completions allowed. Garvin has played 40 snaps so far on defense. Maybe opposing teams have not noticed him in coverage, have found even easier matchups, or Garvin has been great in coverage.

If so, perhaps he has the strength and size to match up with Kittle and the chops to cover him?

We shall see about the timing. That might change, but other sites have their snap counts out now.

Agree with the rest of your comment. I mentioned Bakh's comment about Garvin's raw power a day to two ago. I probably should have mentioned King going to the slot as that is interesting. Still think Jaire might move there for SF against Deebo given their personnel at WR.

One point about what's not in this snap count: two TEs the team is counting on. Without Deguara and Sternberger a good piece of MLF's playbook is not being used. Tonyan and Lewis are very good and important, but the two inactives bring other things to the offense. Their eventual return gives me some hope of continued improvement.

I disagree: Dafney is a Deguara-type with familiarity in the offense. He played a lot of snaps and can fill that Deguara role. I don't think they miss much without Sternberger. Tonyan is the better player in that mold. If you're saying that they'd like to put Sternberger and Tonyan on the field together, that's different.

Now that his suspension is over it's entirely possible that we hear Sternberger has been released this week, and then is signed to the PS.

Zach Kruse reported that King played 22 snaps in the slot, with jaire playing 17 snaps in the slot and Sullivan playing 9 snaps in the slot. So, presumably King played 34 on the boundary, Jaire 40 and Sullivan 9 (or perhaps in some other role). Stokes played 44 snaps. If they were all boundary snaps, then the CBs played 125 snaps on the boundary, or 2.19. It looks like the Packers played some dime with four CBs on the field together, perhaps mostly Sullivan as the dime back. Overall, GB played 5.07 DBs per play (291 snaps altogether).

PFF wrote that GB played dime 33% of the time, or roughly 19 snaps in dime. Amos and Savage played every snap, and Black just 2. So there were only 3 safeties on the field for 2 plays. GB played 5.1 DB/play overall. I am kind of wondering if GB really played dime that much.

More dime in the fourth, mostly nickel in the third with gap cover from Smith and Gray in line. The field conditions really played a big part in limiting what the lions were calling in their pass game.

Amari Rodgers not being able to get a single offensive snap is not a good sign. The way he ran sideways on one of his few punt returns for a nothing gain did nothing to give me any warm fuzzies about him. It's still early for him, I suppose.
