Packers Shock the NFL, sign Martellus Bennett

Not many skill position players have the luxury of going from one future Hall of Fame quarterback to another in the span of a year.

For Martellus Bennett, it's just another day in March.

The former Patriots tight end will sign with the Green Bay Packers, as multiple sources reported Friday afternoon. The details of the contract weren't immediately released, however, ex-Packers tight end Jared Cook was estimated to make $3.4 million per year this offseason. Rather than attempting to retain Cook, the Packers let him walk, and within moments of the news breaking that the Packers lacked interest, it was reported that Bennett was joining the team.

Bennett is celebrating his 30th birthday on Friday with his new deal and is just about a month older than Cook.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was an advocate in keeping Cook in town, saying at the end of the season that retaining the 6'5" tight end should be "prioritized" over the offseason. Consequently, Rodgers posted a graphics interchange format (GIF) on his Twitter of him fist-bumping a Packers scout on the sideline with a caption reading his infamous "r-e-l-a-x" line. It's safe to say he's not too upset with the Bennett move.

Bennett, a Super Bowl champion, is coming off a season in which his Patriots won it all over the Atlanta Falcons — the team who stampeded over the Packers in the NFC Championship game. Over the course of his first and only season in New England, Bennett caught a career-high seven touchdowns and posted a 75.3 catch percentage, also a career-best. His 12.7 yards per reception catching passes from Patriots signal-caller Tom Brady was his most since his 2008 rookie season in Dallas.

It was the first move for a true unrestricted free agent Packers general manager Ted Thompson has made since March of 2012.

While the defensive side of the ball remains unaddressed aside from Nick Perry's monster new contract, the Packers stand pat on offense, giving Rodgers a 6'6" security blanket as they gear up for what else is to come this offseason.

ADDENDUM:

Packers sign Bennett for less than the money they were discussing with Jared Cook:

I thought for sure we were just playing hardball with Cook and would sign him in the end. Had no idea TT had a trump card up his sleave.

Now can we please lay off the 'TT doesn't do FA' fallacy? Can everyone take a deep breath for a few days and stop crying in their beers? At least hold our judgement until the summer?

History pretty much indicates that TT will not sign any other UFA that can make an impact in season 2017.

I've been 'chill'in' for 6 seasons. -- If TT doesn't pick up his game or just retire, that streak will continue.

This is a great signing, and just as good, if not better than Cook.
He's a better blocker and reliable catcher, and hopefully will not get as injured as Cook did. Everytime Cook fell down I was afraid he had something else wrong with him. Edge in speed might go to Cook, but if you can't get on the field, then forget all the rest. Excellent job of filling a position of NEED at a great price.

As president and CEO of the team in question, yeah I'd guess that Murphy "had something to do with this" ... just not more than any other signing.

Heck, even this article is suggesting that this signing somehow "shocks the NFL." No, it doesn't. Ted signed Cook last year, right? Pretty sure he signed that Peppers guy, too.

The broken record falsehood that Ted "never" signs players and "will do absolutely nothing... again" has been spinning for a decade and probably won't stop soon.

It certainly wasn't "just moments" after Cook's people leaked that negotiations broke off with the Pack- that hit the airwaves live at roughly 8:30 this morning.

Still shocking! love it.
Would love it more if Cook's looking elsewhere was just a ruse and he still came home to perch in Green bay. Woud never happen, but could you imagine THAT two TE set?

One thing to remember though is that with Tretter's departure the Packers now need a backup at CENTER, and I'm not sure who else would be able to slide in there. I'm certainly no big fan of Barclay, but I think I like him better at center than guard, and certainly better than at tackle. And even with this signing he will have competition in camp and is not a lock to make the team.

Totally redeems himself? For what, Favre's last years in GB when Albino Ted did nothing to improve the team? Or maybe for last year when he never even tried to sign and DBs to replace the injured guys and kinda' dipping his toe into the RB pool by trading with KC and picking up Cristine Michaels AFTER playing one game without any RBs and getting Lacy hurt worse?
Thompson couldn't carry Belechick's jock strap!
So now he might have gained a slight improvement for an already potent offense, but it's the defense that has let us down for nearly all of Thompson's tenure, where's the improvement there? Rodgers ain't getting any younger!
TT's a loser, and couldn't redeem himself in 10 more years of doing a good job if he could find a way to find his a$$ with both hands, it's great thing his contract is up in about 14 months!
F.A.T: Fire Albino Ted!

Yes draft. With a draft class so deep at pass rusher and CB, why not expect to add a few key pieces? EVERY team relies on the draft to improve their roster. Have a little faith.

And on defense it's not unreasonable to expect a number of guys with less than two years experience to make a Davante-like step in their third year. That includes Randall, Rollins, Gunter, Hawkins, Ryan, Martinez, Lowry, Clark, And Brice.

Draft and develop means you have to have more patience than a 4 year old.

So correct Dobs. We are two days in, and so far 2 pretty nice moves made. Retained Perry and added Martellus Bennett a prospect desired the year before, for cheaper than Cook. Didn't over pay for Hyde, didn't over pay for Tretter, all while retaining Barclay for dirt cheap. That's a lot of action for the packers in the first two days of free agency and I can't complain about any of these moves. There's more to do yes, but answers will come in time. It's a long offseason.

It's more money than I thought we'd spend on Cook, and Bennet has a substantial history of causing problems. That said, he is more talented than Cook is. It's a higher risk play, but the potential is there for this to be great. Too bad Cook is ruling out a return to GB.

This is a business, but MAN that has to hurt him. He enjoyed his time here so much.

What would lead you to believe cook was offered the same deal?

I don't believe the Packers do their business by saying, "We are willing to spend x amount of dollars for the TE"... I do believe the Packers personnel department has a massive board somewhere in the basement where they have every player in the NFL, including their own, grouped by tiers of talent level at their particular position, and probably offer contracts by using that board as a base idea of what a player is worth.

In other words, I'm pretty sure the Packers offered Cook what the packers thought Cook was worth, and I'm pretty sure that number wasn't as high as Bennet's.

My guess is, they offered Cook a little less because of his injury history. He missed nearly 1/2 the season last year. You can't have that type of MIA for a top tier, top pay player. Best player they could have got at the position, outside of a healthy Cook. I just have a feeling Cook will be a perpetual injury risk. He runs high and takes hits.

March 10, 2017 at 10:25 pm

Pretty much agree.

I think the Packers tend to do their business with Packers players that are impending FAs like this:

-Internally assess what that player's true worth is

-make a modest offer

-allow that player to test the market if they so choose

-re-asses the numbers that player is seeing from the field. If it is higher but still reasonable, and they like the player, they may match

-If the Packers can not reconcile their own perceived worth of the player with some other team's relatively high offer, they allow the player to go for the money and wish him well.

I don't think there's much deviation from that cycle, unless it is a player the packers consider a "core" member of the roster. Unfortunately, i think many players have an ego that needs stroked and take the Packers' method of handling contracts the wrong way, and some get hurt/offended they are allowed to test the market and never look back.

For instance, i think Davon House would have had the opportunity to play the market and return to the negotiating table with Green Bay and got an offer. Instead, he took it personal when allowed to test the market and never turned back.

Was a packer fan for 38 years and a viking fan for the last 3. Perry was a good move; He's is a good player with a ton more upside. Bennett is fine, but fleener or cook probably are better with more upside. Letting Hyde go was a mistake, he's a real good football player. The Vikings will have a top 1 defense next year. As in the best defense in the league. I made the right choice 3 years ago. The more i think about it, Aaron Rodgers, the best player ever, deserves the average career he's destined to have. Good for him in being able to r-e-l-a-x and accept it.

"deserves the average career he's destined to have."

Substitute "life" for "career" and you've captured the life of every Viking fan, ever.

But at least you still have the 5-0 start to last year. No one will ever be able to take that away from you.

What a load of shit, 38 years. A Packer fan is a Packer fan for life. You switch to a team that has won what? Nothing. You're a troll, nothing more, so go to your new glass house palace, just quit throwing stones around here.

So you REALLY weren't a Packers Fan, not if you "Switched" after 38 years and to the Vikings no less. You may have followed the Packers but a Fan? HELL NO!!! Packers Fans DON'T switch.

You were on here last season with your chest out after the first few weeks of the season but then disappeared, just like the Vikings do every December.

Until the Vikings win a Championship you don't have room to be critical. The Vikings aren't a great defense, just a very good defense. Very good defenses with offenses like that don't win SB's. I hope that 14th overall pick was worth picking up Bradford...LMAO!!!! Thanks Spielman!!!!

Hate this signing. Don't get me wrong, like they addressed the position and I wasn't high on Cook. But Bennett? History of problems, causing rifts in the locker rooms. Maybe a talented player, but on a team that lacks veteran leadership, he will cause issues. And if his relationship with Rodgers will be like it was between Finley and Rodgers, then we'll all wish Ted would've signed Cook...

You're searching for reasons to not like this move.
Bennett is much better than Cook. He's also much better than Finley ever was.

Bennett brings talent and he brings AN EDGE.

The Packers need more a$$hole$.
Guys who will 1) tell you they're going to beat you, 2) proceed to beat you, and 3) tell you -to your face- how badly they just beat you.

Name one issue you heard out of NE's camp about Bennett. There weren't any. He had a scuffle in practice playing for the Bears. Big whoop. You make it sound like GB doesn't have players with behavior issues. I'll take a guy throwing hands in practice over a guy shooting off his gun in the parking lot outside of a night club or answering the door for the police with a blunt in his mouth.

I think it comes down to coaching. Pretty sure NE is a much more disciplined environment than Chicago.

I'm glad that we signed Bennett, but I'm equally sad that we couldn't have hung on to Cook. I thought he was going to be in GB for a long time. Can you imagine if we could have both Bennett and Cook- gosh! But, like they say, it's a business.....

when you think about it, this move is more or less standing pat with what the Packers had already. just substituting Bennett for Cook.
NOW, they need to go out and get an OLB and CB in FA and i will feel much better.!

I can not for the life of me remember Cook's first name. Really, barely got to know him.

I was a fan of doing this last year and it was rumored Benett didn't want to play in GB. What changed? There is no reason that we shouldn't have kept Cook. He knows the offense and had developed chemistry with Rodgers. I refuse to believe that this was on Cook or his agent. It's really too bad! Benett is a very talented TE but he's also a loud mouth. I'm quite puzzled why GB would take this risk with a known commodity to save a few bucks?! Really?

I think it's pretty clear that the organization knows a whole lot more about doing business in the NFL then you do. Refuse to believe all you want!
