Packers Select CB Kevin King In 2017 NFL Draft, Round Two

With their second-round pick (33rd overall) in the 2017 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers select Kevin King, CB, Washington.

With their second-round pick (33rd overall) in the 2017 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers select Kevin King, CB, Washington.

MEASURABLES / COMBINE:

4.43-second 40-yard dash; 11 reps bench press; 39.5-inch vertical jump; 6.56-second 3-cone drill; 3.89-second 20-yard shuttle; 11.14-second 60-yard shuttle.

CAREER NOTES:

King began his career with the Huskies as a safety, starting 14 games over his first two years. In 2015, he moved back to cornerback and earned Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 honors with a career-high three INTs and eight PD. In 2016, King impressed with 15 passes defensed, which was second-best in the Pac-12. In all, King finished his career with the Huskies with 164 total tackles, including 9.5 for loss; six interceptions; 22 passes defensed; and two forced fumbles.

SCOUTING REPORT:

CHEESEHEADTV.COM: In a nut shell: Kevin King has the agility, ball skills and body control to make plays, but he isn't very physical. He struggles to jam opponents that gain inside leverage on him.

CBSSPORTS.COM:  King's calling card is his versatility. He possesses the size, acceleration, awareness and reliable open-field tackling skills to revert back to free safety at the next level. He is surprisingly agile for a player of his height, however, and could remain at cornerback for a heavy press or zone scheme that features his click-and-close ability.

COMMENTARY:

The Packers' biggest need heading into this draft was cornerback.

Yes, they have three starting-caliber corners on the roster in Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins, and Davon House. However, the Packers struggled with virtually no depth at the position as injuries continued to pile up in 2016, and in an ideal world, Rollins and House would both be nickel corners over perimeter corners.

Green Bay needed to bring a talented body into camp to push these incumbents for the starting jobs, and King fits the bill.

Many scouts had a first-round grade on King, and Ted Thompson likely did, too. That means the Packers got one of their first-round prospects in the early second round, and picked a fourth-round selection at No. 108 to boot.

It was a brilliant maneuver by Thompson, and it paid off with a long, press corner who offers skills the Packers are currently missing on their roster. His play speed might not blow anyone away, and we know this is something the Packers struggle with from their corners. Still, King's versatility helps lessen the sting of losing Micah Hyde in free agency and improves the secondary as a whole.

Works for me. Capers needs guys who can play press man or zone. (House is good at man but not zone) and this guy can do it and has length.

I suppose there was nobody who wanted to pony up for todays first pick. Either way, great move to get this guy and the first pick tomorrow.

Seems like all the teams that talked about trading up found a partner after the Packers picked, though. I wonder what the Packers turned down?

Yep, especially compared to the other side of NFC Central. The Vikings just lost a similar pick to what the Packers got for free, to trade up and refill their teams quota of violent reprobates.

Amazing value with the 33rd pick. (And to think years ago we chose Terrell Buckley with 5th overall. Would have loved to have seen King match up against Michael Irvin back in the day.)

Big thumbs up to TT with his first selection. Let's go get another!

The best rbs are gone now so that op went out the window as we try to make up for teds crappy picks. Hey his nemesis on the vikes just took what may be the best rbs in the draft and we got a corner who ain't highly regarded. Lacks physical play. Looked frail to me.

Look at what all those elite running backs did for the Vikings. Look at all their Super Bowl trophies. RB is not what it used to be. It's a passing league.

Al , Kevin King was the best CB they could have gotten. He can play outside. He'll play like Shields. Maybe even better. I would think that being he put some time in at Safety, he can tackle better than Shields did ,when he first started. He seems like a very honorable young man. With a great attitude. The packers needed taller and faster. Kevin King should do well.

I bitchd to hey needed a corner and got one . I bitchd they need to stop with the 5'10 guys and get some size. They did. The guy looked skinny to me like maybe 180 not 200? Hope he can handle the physical NFL compared to the pack 12.

I like Josh Jones, but I didn't see this coming. Man, TT is really making a statement. By taking secondary players with his 1st and 2nd picks this year, he's trying to make-up for his draft mistakes in 2015.

I think Burnett will get one last 3 year contract.

He's a good safety, and the defense looks to Burnett as -the- leader of the defense.

Then I believe there's the possibility Brice steps in, if he continues to develop. His measurables are impressive (high 4.3 speed) and we already know he's not afraid to stick his nose in there and get dirty.

There's Nothing wrong with Burnett, unless he tries to Break The Bank. He's a Good Football Player 1 of 2 in the Defensive Backfield. I don't see GB letting him go. He deserves a Decent Contract.

Im really hoping the plan for Jones is for him to be our Deone Bucannon/Sua Cravens. I wanted Cravens last year but this guy is a much bigger hitter and seems to have a thicker body type.

I'd rather see HaHa move into the SS role and have Jones take the FS role (though the Packers' safeties pretty much do both).

Wonder how Randall and Rollins are feeling now. Maybe Ted doesn't completely buy into the injuries being the reason for the poor play last season. I'm curious who's filling in for Clay when he's out his 4 or 5 games with a hammy?

Wished they picked Willis, he was a great value there at the end of the 2nd.

I think the answer is "Motivated".

I also think the organization has faith in their 2015 CB draft pick duo.

I expect to see the Packers' secondary have a much, much improved year in 2017 provided they can remain reasonably healthy- and if they can't, they've added more talented depth to help them out.

I know we are all Packers fans but so many posters on this site kept making excuses for Randall and Rollins. We all hope that injuries were the main reason that they both stunk, and I mean they were really really bad.

I just never believed it was all due to injury. They made bad decisions, were in poor position often and overmatched in size, speed and mobility weekend after weekend. Some of that may have been injury, but NOT all of it.

Looks like Packers management agrees with that. ( yes I realize that Jones is a "Safety" but with 5-6 DB's on the field there is a lot of overlap of duties). I do hope they re-sign Burnett and that this pick doesn't indicate giving up on an extension for Morgan.

NF,

You make a good point that injuries can only explain a portion of the sophomore secondary's play this past year. I just think it takes several years to really settle into the NFL for most players and that these guys are still adjusting.

I don't make excuses for their play. No doubt they played poorly. But that doesn't mean they are busts at this stage of the game either. There's a reason why they call it a sophomore slump. Davonte Adams had his two years ago and proved his worth in 2016. A couple of these guys could come on strong this year and be productive players.

What we're asking for is patience, not excuses.

Actually like both 2nd round picks. The same thing most said back in 2015 with the R&R DBs.

Unfortunately, it's TT making up for past mistakes again. Just think if GB had a 'real' GM. (bring on Eliot)

These 2 guy's look like 2 good picks to me. They will have to show they can play, but it's about time GB put's some size in the Defensive Backfield. The day's of 5'10" DB's in the NFL are over. Time will tell if GB did the right thing by trading out of 29. They hopefully filled a need.

I would have liked to see an OLB but I guess they did not see a value at this pick position.

Since the Packers play mostly with Nickel and Dime packages, you can never have enough quality DB's. But it does reinforce my opinion that the CB's who were awful last season are not expected by Packers management to get much better.

A lot of high picks in past three seasons on DB's. Hope these latest two are better than the previous two stiffs.

You do know you could have made those 7 comments into one long negative comment don't you?

My sister and I noticed the same thing, he didn't look overjoyed but I think that was nothing more than leftover disappointment of not going in the first round than being drafted by the Packers. Matter of fact he commented on it when being interviewed.
