Packers Select OT Jason Spriggs in 2016 NFL Draft, Round Two
By JerseyAl
After a trade to move up nine spots (yes you read that correctly), the Green Bay Packers used pick #48 to select Jason Spriggs, OT, Indiana
MEASURABLES:
6'6", 301lbs, 4.94 40yd, 115″ broad jump, 4.44 20-yd shuttle, 31 bench press reps.
CAREER NOTES:
Spriggs was a four year starter and team captain for the Hoosiers. Played left tackle in a zone blocking spread offense. Was named first team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America and 3rd team by the Associated Press. Gave up only two sacks in 431 pass attempts. Sprigggs graded out as the Gold Medal winner among linemen at the "Underwear Olympics," otherwise known as the NFL Combine.
SCOUTING REPORT:
CBS SPORTS: Steady run and pass blocker. Has enough set-up quickness and lateral mobility to beat rushers around the corner, showing smooth body control and natural athleticism in space. Has the temperament needed to match up vs. fierce pass rushers. Rather than maul defenders at the point of attack, Spriggs relies on his quickness and agility. He showed the quickness and balance at Senior Bowl practices that scouts have appreciated about his game in the past, while also flashing some nastiness, looking to pancake opponents when he could.
Struggles at times to sustain blocks due to average upper body strength and pad level. He needs to improve the timing and force of his punch in order to better control defenders.
In a Nutshell: A former tight end, Spriggs is a fluid, athletic big man fit strictly for a zone blocking scheme. As a run blocker, he doesn’t show much power or ability to finish blocks. In pass protection, he has an efficient kick slide but can get knocked off balance and is very susceptible to inside moves. As you would expect, he pulls or gets to the second level easily, but he’s spotted whiffing on blocks way too often.
NFL Combine: If there were a “Best in Shorts” award at the combine, Spriggs would take the OL competition in a landslide. He was first in the 40-yard dash, first in the broad jump, second in the 20-yard shuttle and fourth in the bench press. While there’s no denying his athletic prowess, his tape shows a myriad of inadequacies he will have to work on.

Solid pick. Good value at this point. OLTs are usually first-round type guys. Hopefully he's got it in him. A little bit Ken Ruettgers-ish?

Why would you say that? The guy was the 5th or 6th best OT in the entire draft, and that was BEFORE the combine. He blew away every other O-Lineman in just about every drill and put up 31 Reps on the bench...WITH those long arms ( 34 1/8 ) which is something. Most had him as a low 1st to high 2nd. It was huge need with 2017 coming and we stole him from the Bears.

Getting a Tackle that athletic at pick 48 is great. Hopefully he keeps Rodgers on his feet a little more, prolongs his career and provides some insurance for the free agency of Bulaga and Bahk.

Bulaga was locked-up last year.

Man, so far the Pack have nailed my listing of need priority.
#1 DL (NT)
#2 OL (OT)
Next up would be LB (OLB... or perhaps a big strong safety who could be converted to ILB)
Let's see what they do next.

Deion Jones would be an awesome addition. Don't think he'll be there at 88 though

I like Deion Jones. He would solve a lot of issues in th middle and even in the curl to flat.
HankScorpio
April 29, 2016 at 08:13 pm
LB would be nice. So would RB, TE or even another DL depending on where there is value. Helping the LoS in the top 2 rounds really gives them flexibility, IMO.
L
April 29, 2016 at 09:14 pm
I certainly wouldn't mind them grabbing another DL guy if they felt that player was BAP.
HankScorpio
April 29, 2016 at 09:28 pm
Yeah, remember that team that had too many good defensive linemen?
Me neither.
L
April 29, 2016 at 10:23 pm
Well, that's 3 for 3.
#1 DL (NT)
#2 OL (OT)
#3 LB (OLB)
Guessing, but I think tomorrow probably brings another DL, TE, and ILB (could potentially be a big SS for conversion); a scatback type RB could be a possibility given the value Ted places on that player, but I don't think it's a real necessity. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a trade back in oder to pick-up an additional pick somewhere.

That alone for me means this is a good pick. I really love this pick actually. He is really athletic and much stronger than people think. Hopefully gets coached well to work on his weaknesses, and maybe this is the starting LT in a year or so.
So far, 2 solid picks with upside. Hope Ted can keep this up. I am not worried about MLB. Would rather see another good DT.

Always trust in Ted. He knows what he wants and he goes and gets it. Sorry I havent been around much. In El Salvador trying to figure out what's going on in the draft. Last night stayed up and watched it all on Spanish (which I don't speak). Not bad actually. Tonight they aren't even broadcasting it. But I can watch 16 channels of soccer. April 29, 2016 at 08:05 pm
Disagree. They need replace Bakh, who's probably gone after this year. Plus, it's almost a certainty that Bulaga will get hurt. Would you rather have Spriggs or Barclay as a replacement?

How about JC Tretter and a 4th round OT as backups???

Is this the beginning of the end for Bakh? His price tag is probably going to be too high.

Who knows. Maybe Bulaga or Bakh gets injured and we need another tackle. If Spriggs shows something, we have insurance going forward and that is a good thing for Aaron Rodgers and us.

I posted this on the other thread. I think it is. Thompson has done this in the past. Drafted Cobb to replace Jennings. Drafted Rollins to replace Hayward.
Next year they lose Bakhtiari they will receive at least a 3rd or 4th round in compensation.

This pick shows you what the Packers think of Bakhtiari.
He led the team in penalties last year (11) and as we all know, is frequently called for holding. Yes, he was missed in the 3 games he was injured late last season. He's been solid and good value for a 4th rounder, but is he really a franchise left tackle?
This pick tells me that Ted is not willing to pay the ridiculous price tag that the market demands for a starting left tackle. Perhaps Ted would rather let Bakhtiari walk (I could totally see the Bears or Vikings going after him) and using the savings to re-sign Lang and Sitton.
If I'm David Bakhtiari, I'd feel like I was just put on notice.
dobber
April 29, 2016 at 08:48 pm
Either way, he's playing for a contract. He's motivated to stay healthy and play well.
Rossonero
April 29, 2016 at 08:52 pm
Yes, it's on him now. The Packers are usually pretty good about looking at the whole body of work over the previous contract's length (in this case 4 years). I don't know if those 4 years are compelling enough for Ted to open up his wallet and dig deep.
I'll credit Bakhtiari that he's also been quite durable himself, rarely missing any games. I just can't see them spending a 2nd round pick on a left tackle and then bringing Bakhtiari back so Spriggs can sit and watch. At the very least, Bulaga is good to miss 3-4 games, so Spriggs will get some playing time at some point.
ShawnO
April 29, 2016 at 08:52 pm
It's not going to cost the Pack much to resign the two guards. They are no longer on their Rookie contracts. They are both getting older and might get between 1 to 2 mil increase in pay each. At the most the two of them together would hit the cap for 4 mil.

Sitton's going to be 30 in June. Bad back. I don't know.
ShawnO
April 29, 2016 at 10:42 pm
OK, so I worded my statement a little wrong. If the Pack currently have 13 mil in cap space after paying Sitton and Lang together this year 12 mil. If they both get a 1 mil dollars per year increase in pay then they would hit the cap for 14 mil leaving 11 mil of cap space. In my mind if we currently have no issue paying them their current pay and they only increase 1 mil each then it's cheep to resign them.

It's not that I don't like him, I just saw flaws that have to be worked out. He will have a year where he won't be expected to play to do it. Down the road, he could prove to be a great pick, but he has to make those improvements.

Not that many big people on this planet with this kind of athleticism, Al. I love this pick. He might be starting by mid season, even if our 2 starting OTs can stay healthy...
At the very least another kid with impeccable character who will come ready to work.
And one can never have enough good OLs. We all saw last season what happened when there were injuries to starters...

His weakness is getting beat inside? Thats good he has trouble protecting the shortest distance to our QB. I get looking ahead to replace players they are expecting to potentially lose in free agency, and without a doubt we all know how important OT's are. However none of us are going to be thinking about that while watching Ryan and Barrington get torched inside this season!

Urban Meyer said he was a top 3 offensive lineman in the Big 10, so that means hes going to be a home run for us by your logic? I apologize for not being able to get the image of Sam Barrington botching that wheel route against Marshawn Lynch out of my head in that NFCCG the year before last. Not sure this spells trouble for Bakh as Ted always drafts LTs for his line. They are generally there in college because they are the best lineman on the team. Would Spriggs translate well to guard too? Meanwhile TT gonna get another chance at Billings. Like Last year two top picks at a position of need. Redundant, but you cannot get enough big uglys. Far from a beast, but I love his football IQ and awareness. He's limited in the athletic department, but what he lacks there he makes up for with smarts and technique. He looks natural in zone.
Lol, I thought about coming in saying I like him better than Perry, but I'm going to let that sit for a while.
EDIT: Perfect example of High IQ and smarts with little athleticism to offer. He reads the route, jumps it, but can't change direction quick enough and it led to an easy TD.

Very good and necessary pick by Ted. Remember, basically, these are kids still maturing (Kenny Clark is just 20) so let the coaches work on perfecting their techniques.
