Pre-Order The Pro Football Draft Preview Today!!

Packers Select Kyler Fackrell in 2016 NFL Draft, Round Three

With their third-round pick (88th overall) in the 2016 NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers select Kyler Fackrell, Outside Linebacker, Utah State

MEASURABLES / COMBINE:

6'5", 245 lbs, 4.72 40yd, 34.5″ vertical, 121″ broad jump. 15 reps on the bench

CAREER NOTES:

As an outside linebacker/defensive end hybrid, Fackrell primarily rushed from a two-point stance in Utah State's rush backer role, but he also spent time with his hand in the dirt in a three-point stance in passing situations--similar to how the Packers have used Julius Peppers or Nick Perry in their defensive front.

In 2012, Fackrell started all 13 games as a redshirt freshman, earning first-team All-WAC honors and finishing second on his team in interceptions with three. The Arizona native then gained national recognition with an impressive sophomore campaign the following year, leading his team in tackles for loss (13) and finishing second in sacks with five. Following his second collegiate year, many believed Fackrell could be a potential first-round prospect once he declared for the draft.

However, Fackrell's draft stock took a major hit in 2014, when his junior season was ended early after he tore his ACL in the first game of the season. Fackrell managed to bounce back in 2015 and put together a solid senior year. He finished second on the team in tackles with 82 stops and led the Aggies in tackles for loss (15) and quarterback hurries (13), while also recording four sacks.

NFL.COM DRAFT PROFILE

SCOUTING REPORT:

CBSSPORTS.COM: Tall, long-levered frame. Worked hard to develop his muscle and limb strength. Loose athlete with smooth redirection skills and long strides to cover a lot of ground. Lateral quickness to sidestep blocks or string plays to the outside. Active rusher and quick to read, adjust his angle and close. Uses his length to engage and lock out. Looks natural in reverse and has experience in coverage. Offers athletic versatility and natural ball-skills (eight passes defended and four interceptions in his career).

Played on special teams coverages in college, including one blocked kick. Humble and hard-working, but also feisty and competitive - singled out as the leader of the defense by his head coach. Football junkie who already works and prepares like a professional. Highly productive with 253 tackles and 36.0 tackles for loss over 41 career starts.

COMMENTARY:

The Packers get a solid edge rusher prospect here at the end of the third round. Fackrell has the length, height, and build to play outside linebacker in the Packers 3-4 defensive front. He also has the frame to add weight to hold up better on the edge, if need be.

Immediately, he could rotate in as a pass rusher, especially on third downs and relieve starters Julius Peppers and Clay Matthews. However, Fackrell most likely factors into Green Bay's long-term plans.

Peppers is 36 and will likely retire soon. Fackrell could eventually replace him at left outside linebacker. There are no guarantees Nick Perry or Datone Jones are the future at the position. If drafting an edge rusher was the Packers plan all along, then he offered the best value for Green Bay at the end of the third round.

Before Fackrell's injury in 2014, many believed the Utah State edge rusher could have been a potential first-round selection. He defintiely posseses the physical traits, but his age (25) and injury history hurt his draft stock this weekend.

Having said this, Fackrell is a tough, hard-nosed edge defender, who made a lot of plays against the run in college and plays with a tremendous motor. He'll swarm to the ball and has the athleticism to make plays in space.

Some have speculated that the former Aggie defensive end could make the move to inside linebacker because of his instincts and athleticism. Maybe this is how the Packers are planing on using him?

First pick irritated me, second one was OK, and this one leaves me feeling relieved and even a smidge excited. Kyle could be a big player, according to PFF he has one of the highest rated pass rushing grades in terms of pass rushing attempts. But even if that doesn't pan out he's very good in other areas. Great pick in terms of both talent and need.

From NFL.com's scouting report...

"When it comes to the length and athleticism teams will look for off the edge, Fackrell will be one of the poster boys. His field versatility, coverage talent and potential as a pass rusher could make him one of the fastest rising prospects in this draft and a future contender for a Pro Bowl nod."

The board has fallen nicely for the Packers, and TT has done a nice job of making those picks. Already two likely future starters in this draft and Fackrell could be a third. Sounds like the makings of a success.

Oh, you still believe PFF "experts" who was defending their shameful marking claiming that Aaron Rodgers played worse than Carson Palmer, while all the data was telling opposite (it was at the beginning of the season! As I remember they said that Carson Palmer has harder game to play than Aaron, because of personal - how they grade them in Divisional round? Must be that Aaron was still playing easier games than Carson Palmer - look at the teams. Carson Palmer has nobody to play with. poor guy!

I kidded you a little when you wanted Fackrell in the 2nd, but he is a good value pick in the 3rd at 88. Maybe can play some coverage while he works on his strength, but he should see the field this year.

Would have liked Butler in the first, but love the Spriggs pick. Resign my man Tretter and one of the guards and the o-line will be fine after next year. Would like Bakh back at the right price. Should be able to do with Peppers falling off the books.

Really like the Fackrell pick too. All he does is make plays.

Rest up Ted - there's more work to be done in day 3.

There's no reason being tall limits an ILB.

However, he IS undersized at 245 lbs and definitely under-developed at 15 bench reps for playing OLB in a 3-4 where he's going to have to set edges and make plays vs. massive NFL OT's. If he can't do that, he's just a pass rush specialist, not a 3-down 3-4 OLB.

I think there is a strong possibility he could be tried out as the playmaker ILB- some systems call it the will, others the mike- the ILB that is supposed to be kept clean and be able to flow to the ball carrier and make the play.

If this kid can do it, you've placed a LB who can cover in the middle of the field, he's obviously athletic enough to cover ground and get to the ball carrier, and he's got pass rush ability so he's flexible enough to get out on the edges from time to time in certain situations or packages.

But this is a wasted pick if you're looking for a 3-down OLB unless he manages to put on 20 lbs and a whole helluvalotta upper body strength this year.

Dude has really long arms which is going to help hime against Tackles but does not help in the beanch press. Also it would be nice to know what his 1RM in the bench press is. Part of the low count could be that he is fast twitch. He looked pretty quick on tape.

Looked at Spriggs at the combine. The agility of the 6'7" dude is amazing. A year of training and technique with a little weight gain and watch out. Good attitude. Pro-size left tackle.

The Packers got a first round talent in the second.

In the third too. If Fackrell didn't have a ACL he would have been a late first rounder. I like Spriggs better than Half of the Tackles who went it the top ten picks over the last four years.

There is still a ton of OL talent out there. Westerman, Tretola, McGovern, Hawkins, Vadal Alexander all could have gone in the 3rd/4th range. I am not deep enough in the weeds to have watched the rest, but Turner, Haeg, Beavers maybe 4th/5th. People like Murphy, Theus and Drango, tho not me so much. If TT wants to add an OG or OT, there will be some out there.

4th round, Andrew Billings still on the board. Something's gotta be up, right? NFL scouts and GM's are aware of something about this guy the rest of us don't know. Curious. The mocks are getting mocked. Some had him going in the top 15.

He's definitely going to be seeing time at ILB if he's going to be on the field on all 3 downs.

CowREBORN says:

Clark > Raji, Pennel, Guion
Spriggs > Barclay, Bulaga, Bakhtiari
Fackrell > Neal, Perry, Elliott, Jones

Tap the brakes a little Cow, but better, much much better. Really good value for Spriggs for what they paid, but he definitely needs a year to watch, learn and grow. Good value for Fackrell... would expect him to be even more athletic another year removed from the knee. Still sore about Clark, but at least I can sleep tonite.

Solid, solid picks so far. Everything I've read says these young men are great character, hard working, FOOTBALL players. Some are concerned about Fackrell being older, but his maturity and experience in playing the 3-4 may translate to being practically a sophomore NFL player without the learning curve of some "fish out of water" 4-3 player trying to learn a new position. Having had eight (8) knee surgeries myself it's impressive how well he came back from the ACL so well! I can't wait to see how the rest of Ted's picks come out. Look's at first glance like this could be another homerun draft for Ted!!!
