Pre-Order The Pro Football Draft Preview Today!!

Packers select Dean Lowry in the 2016 NFL Draft, round four

With their second fourth round pick (#137 overall), the Green Bay Packers select Dean Lowry, DE, Northwestern.

MEASURABLES / COMBINE:

6'6", 296 lbs, 4.87 40 yd, 32.5" vertical, 114" broad jump, 7.26 second 3 cone, 4.38 20 yd shuttle

CAREER NOTES:

Lowry stayed in-state to play at Northwestern for head coach Pat Fitzgerald.  "Lunch pail" guy who brings tremendous effort on every snap.  Lowry is a very good athlete.  A sub-4.9 40 in addition to a 32.5" inch vert is very impressive for a 6'6" 296 pound man.  Lowry consistently made plays in the backfield, including a team record 6 tackles for loss against Nebraska.

NFL.COM Draft Profile

SCOUTING REPORT:

CBSSports.com: An impact player since arriving on campus, Lowry quietly improved every season, culminating with a consensus second team All-Big Ten senior year in which he ranked second on the team with 13.5 tackles for loss.

While he did not have a truly standout seasons on the national stage, he did earn an invitation to the Shrine Game, where he was a standout during practices.

"I feel like I'm playing my best football right now," Lowry said in November. "I can't really say I've had excellent years in previous years that put me on the radar. I think I'm just getting better each season, and that's what I've done so far."

As a junior, Lowry recorded 4.0 sacks, eight tackles for loss and 41 total tackles. He also finished second on the team with eight pass break-ups, using his size and wingspan to obstruct passing lanes and knock down throws at the line of scrimmage.

He started nine games in 2013, finishing second on the team with 7.0 tackles for loss and third with 4.5 sacks. Lowry was one of four freshmen to crack the Wildcats' lineup in 2012, recording 14 tackles, 3.0 TFL and six QB hurries in 13 games as a reserve.

COMMENTARY: Lowry has a chance to be the tall 5 tech that the Packers have been lacking basically since the inception of their 3-4 defense.  He's a borderline-freak athlete.  There is certainly a chance that he can provide the Packers snaps from both the defensive line and the edge. After the loss of BJ Raji, the Packers DL has been re-stocked with talent.

Lowry consistently operates in the opposing backfield, though it didn't always translate directly into big sack totals for the Big Ten product.  Lowry's midwestern attitude is sure to make him a fan favorite in Green Bay sooner rather than later.  The Packers were able to draft two distinct body types in Lowry and first round pick Kenny Clark.  The big knock on Lowry is relatively short 31" arms, so despite being 6'6", Lowry is not necessarily "long".

Height, but has T-Rex arms for a guy his size. Good strength. Might compete at 5-tech.

While I am not sure I agree with you, I admire a fan who's not afraid to question a pick from Thompson.
It seems too many just automatically give him the benefit of the doubt, ignoring the fact that his D-line picks have had plenty of big failures among them:

Kyri Thornton Rd 3
Jerel Worthy Rd 2 (traded UP to take him)
Justin Harrell Rd 1

Plus Mike Neal in Rd 2 was two or three rounds too early. And he failed as a DL, was moved to try OLB.

That was quite a reach as he looked like a 7th rounder. Hope the scouts see something.

I'm loving his film. He doesn't offer much moves at all, but he has power, good hustle and a HELLUVA get off for someone near 300-pounds.

Ya well there scouts are rocket scientist the last few drafts either. It just seems we have guys already who are better than this that dont seem to get on the field much: pennel, eliot. Just who is this vguy suppose to supplant? Whenyou cant answer that you question the pick. Aint like the packers are deep without needs.

"probably could have signed him after the draft."

Probably shouldn't have bothered then either...

Where is the tape on this guy doing anything special? I'd love to see some.

Going OT so high was my biggest complaint, but I didn't hate it or dislike Spiggs specifically - hence the B- for the position. Everything else I liked generally.

I like Trevor Davis. He's got big 10" hands and good speed, and did a lot of kickoff returns and punt returns in college.

I do not know anything about Lowry or Davis. No time to watch tape (company coming over soon). I do know that there were players I still had a high regard for - Brown, Duarte, Adams. Davis in particular is a head scratcher - where will we put him? PS for a year? Watched TM´s highlights despite company. Well, maybe he can learn the playbook and how to run routes.

Wow, Ted really likes the Pac-12. The write up for Davis on NFL.com does not seem very impressive. I've come around on the Clark pick. There wasn't much said about him in the draft guide, so I was ignorant. Seems like we had a pretty good first two days. Today doesn't seem so hot, but we'll see.

The Bears, on the other hand, picked #1 on my wishlist for the 4th round (Kwiakowski) and #1 on my wishlist for the 5th round (Hall). I would have been really happy with their first and second round picks too (Floyd and Bullard). This is really irritating because they also got Trevathan and Freeman in Free Agency, guys who I also wanted. Fortunately, they still have Cutler...so it all evens out.

Did you see that Minnesota drafted that German guy? That will be interesting.

I DON'T understand with Jerrell Adams still sitting there why he drafts Lowry. Lowry is a high motor try hard guy with is great but I actually AGREE with Cow, some offense would be helpful. Cook is signed for year and Rodgers will be slow his entire career.

"Motor" is so unbelievably overrated it's hard to stomach anymore. Motor without the athleticism and skill set to pair with it gets chewed up and spit out at the NFL level. Motor is what makes teams pick guys who turn out to be below average once they elevate to NFL caliber competition. Motor is GREAT when it comes with the right tools but is fool's gold when it doesn't.

I loved the 2nd & 3rd rd picks, and Martinez is a nice pick, but TT really crapped the bed on this one. Paul Perkins and Christian Westerman are both big misses. Westerman will be an All-Pro G in time.

Every year there is someone I like better than the guy TT drafted. The exception is when I have never heard of the guy TT drafted, so I do not know which player I like better. Oh, once in a while TT takes a player I really like. Yes, I saw Westerman and McGovern out there, and Adams and Duarte, and a host of others.

Nothing new here, and we seem to muddle through.
