Packers Select Anders Carlson, K in 2023 NFL Draft - Round 6

The Packers select a possible replacement for the departed Mason Crosby.

Anders Carlson is the brother of Daniel Carlson; kicker for the Las Vegas Raiders. Perhaps this is a case of hoping the same success extends to the younger brother as well. The Packers already have Parker White on the roster, but he's largely untested and could definitely use some competition in camp.

Carlson was 173 of 176 on extra points in his career while being 79 of 110 on field goals with a long of 53 down at Auburn.

2 others remain undrafted and look possibly better, Podlesny and Szmyt, with the first of those rated as #2 overall. Although the same source says our guy could prove to be the best of class if he returns to form after his knee injury. They listed him fourth, another listed him #5 in this draft.

I wonder if they'll take one of these 2 as UDFA to have competition in the room and ditch Crosby?

His parents are proud of him and he has a great relationship with the family dog. Tore his non-kicking leg ACL in 2021 fielding an on-side kick. What's not to like?

Plus he's from Colorado Springs. So we can't possibly miss on another Colorado specialist.... Right?

After a pretty good year He messed up his knee and was not as good as the previous year. He was reportedly slow in his delivery and led to some blocks. Big guy and used to knock it out of the park before his injury.

One source says if he returns to form before his injury he could prove to be the best kicker of this draft class. They rate him #4, we picked him as the third kicker, right?

Two others that look like they might be better remain undrafted, Podlesny and Szmyt. Maybe we'll take one as an UDFA to have competition and release Crosby?

I'd like to know how he can improve upon his 72% field goal rate and 59% touchback rate when he kicks in the NFL. Maybe part of it is that he was coming off an ACL tear last year and wasn't fully recovered from it, so he should now be at full strength. Or maybe he can benefit from coaching. When Rick Bisaccia was with the Raiders, he coached Carlson's brother, who is also a kicker.

Two 53-yarders was the longest I could find, both of them back in 2018, when he was a freshman. I don't know if he ever attempted any longer ones. That's not very impressive, but for whatever reason, college kickers are seldom impressive.

He had a great year in in 2020 prior to the knee injury making 93% of his kicks. If he can return to that level it would make him one of the best kickers in the draft

He’s only missed 3 extra points and no 3 pointers from under 30 yards. His older brother was drafted by the Vikings and has been with the Raiders for a couple of years and very good.

He has had accuracy issues on kick offs and is sub 54% for his career over 40 yards. He may not be the best kicker on our roster, at least it’s not obvious.

Not a very good third day at all so far, with a couple of exceptions (both DL), some pretty dubious picks I could see not justifying spots on the final roster. This is another.

When you spend a 5th round pick on a kicker.... He better be the best or the only option on the team. Look at how J.K Scott turned out.

Oh my. Now if Anders was a clone of his brother, okay, but I'm not sure if we have one. He has a strong leg, but FG accuracy isn't as sterling as you would like it to be. And obviously kicking in the SEC is not going to be the same as kicking in the NFC North.

That being said, I think Gute would be wise to invite a small army of kickers to Green Bay for a tryout when the time comes--just in case.

Yeah, I don't think he's Crosby's heir apparent. He's just someone to compete for the job. He's tall for a kicker: 6 feet, 5 inches tall. I wonder why there aren't more tall kickers? Maybe it's because shorter people have a shorter arc when they swing their leg, which makes them more accurate. Maybe it's the same reason why the short irons in a set of golf clubs have shorter shafts than the long irons and drivers. They're built for accuracy, not distance.

It was a 6th round pick. I guess there was a bit more action on kickers this year than than in recent years, with the first one being picked at the end of round three.

You're right, my mistake. I still think it's ridiculous. Look at all of the punters and kickers ever drafted. Almost none of them pan out, especially highly drafted players like Presley Harvin, for example. Most recent example of a draftee failure.

Kicking and even punting in the NFL is such a psychological challenge that you just don't know how a guy is going to handle it until he's actually in the NFL. Physical traits and previous experience don't count for a whole lot. And this guy isn't that impressive in either respect anyway. Presumably Rick Bisaccia had something to do with bringing him in. In Bisaccia we trust? Under him, our special teams have improved from terrible all the way up to average. It counts for something, I guess.

I was hoping we would get the Michigan kicker, Jake Moody, but he went early and I wasn't really surprised he was drafted. I also read about Chad Ryland from Maryland and he had a great college record and high kicking percentage, but he was drafted fairly early as well. Those are the only two kickers I was familiar with prior to the draft.

I am surprised the Packers used a 6th round pick on Anders Carlson. It just seems like he would be a player who would be available as a free agent, especially coming off an ACL and lacking "knock your socks off" kicking statistics.

We certainly had great success on our last kicker we picked in the 6th round and we can only hope this one works out well.

I'm not wild about the pick, but to be fair, if he was a free agent he could try out for any team that was interested, and it very well might not be the Packers. Then they would have to try out a kicker who was even less impressive in college.

Gute has had a very, very bad day. 3 of these picks might well have been UDFAs and not the best among those either.

Ok, a little harsh, Wicks would have been worth a late 7th flyer on the strength of athleticism alone, in the hope that he can somehow learn to catch. Probably the worst college catcher I can remember us drafting, but athletic.

"Gute has had a very, very bad day." According to who...you?

Grading drafts before these players have even had an NFL practice, much less a pre-season game or actual NFL game experience is silly.

Apparently, you've moved on from being an NFL coach, criticizing every move MLF makes, to now being an NFL GM.

Give it a break. Let these players have a chance to see what they can do.

Too many potential contributors on the board to take a kicker in the 6th round. This guy almost certainly would have been sitting there at the end of the 7th. Not against using a pick on a kicker, just not there. Hope he is the heir apparent and it works out.

I think what the Packers were thinking on this one was how he was kicking before his knee injury, as ACL tears take a while to get back to full strength. Plus we have Bisaccia coaching his brother maybe being a factor as well. Time will tell but I think it would be prudent to have at least 3 kickers in camp to do battle.

At first I thought this kid was a hockey player eligible for the upcoming NHL draft. My theory is that Bisaccia knows this kid and recommended him to Gutekunst. So he (Gutekunst) drafted him - probably early - to make his best coach happy.

Parker White will win the job. Senior year at South Carolina he was 16/17 on field goals and 30/30 on extra points. Was 10/10 during tryout, including 4/4 over 50. Also hit one from 60.
Let the competition begin.
Also keep Crosby on speed dial.

How was his kicking in near to below freezing temperatures and snow?

Down the stretch and playoff kicking in Lambeau requires a kicker who knows how to cope with those factors.. as well as brutal swirling winds.
