Packers Reportedly Interview Notre Dame Assistant
The Packers have reportedly interviewed Notre Dame assistant coach Tony Alford, who has coached wide receivers and running backs at the college level.
The Green Bay Packers have reportedly interviewed Notre Dame assistant coach Tony Alford, according to 247Sports.com.
Where Alford would fit onto the staff of the Packers is up for speculation.
Once former offensive coordinator Joe Philbin was hired as the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins, it set off a domino-falling effect in Green Bay.
Former quarterbacks coach Tom Clements has been promoted to offensive coordinator, and earlier today it was learned that Ben McAdoo would be taking over as the new quarterbacks coach.
If the Packers continue to go the route of staying in-house, perhaps the next move would be a promotion for John Rushing from assistant wide receivers/special teams coach to tight ends coach, presumably leaving another spot open on the staff if they choose to fill it.
In addition to the recent move by McAdoo, the Packers have shuffled the duties of several assistant coaches under head coach Mike McCarthy. This past season Edgar Bennett made the move from running backs to wide receivers coach while Jerry Fontenot moved from assistant offensive line to running backs coach.
Alford has been both a wide receivers and running backs coach at Notre Dame.

Looking at Alford's coaching history (Thanks, google) he's been primarily a RB coach since '95, with WR coaching duties currently at ND. He had a five year stint as RB Coach/ Asst Head Coach with Iowa sate ('02-'06). Looks like most of his gigs have been for 1 or 2 seasons before moving on to the next coaching job. Interestingly, he had two long-term stints at Iowa State, '97 - 2000 as the RB coach, he then bounced to Washington as the RB coach in 2001, before returning to Iowa state as previously mentioned as the RB/asst HC.
I'm trying to find out if this guy is a renowned teacher of the ZBS or something. Maybe he's just an up and coming coach in general. My original thought was perhaps the Packers' domino effect of coaches was going to open up a near entry-level coaching position (offensive quality control, perhaps) for a young, collegiate coach with promise to jump into.. But Alford seems to be experienced enough with RBs that it would suggest that would be his avenue to enter the NFL ranks.
Anyone have any insight into how most college-to-pro rank coaching transitions go? I've never paid all that much attention.

A fresh face or two can sometimes be just what the doctor ordered to light fires and combat complacency. Don't know anything about Alford, but I'm all for giving guys a chance. Lombardi didn't start at the top. Interesting bit of trivia.. did you know McCarthy was actually taking tolls at one point? Joking, I know everybody knows that but it cracks me up how often announcers bring it up as if it's breaking news... Back on track... Yeah, fresh blood, what the Hell.

If MM had respect for his coaches and I believe that to be the situation. He would have released assistants early and given them the most time to find another position. The Pack has enough cap room to sign Finley and that's it, so no free agents on defense. That leaves the draft to change this defense, not likely to make the changes they need. If Capers video session before the playoff game didn't get through, what is the current staff going to change. It seems as though the players aren't listening.

09' coaching and personnel in the regular season (top 5 defense) - Our savior!
09' coaching and personnel exposed in the post-season - someone must pay!
10' same coaching and personnel in the regular season (top 5 defense) - Our savior!
10' post-season SB run (crazy comparison to 96' defensive unit ensues) - Our savior!
11' season, little difference in personnel and coaching (regression all-around) - Public floggings ensue, cats & dogs living together, Thompson and his staff are a joke, SOS!!!!!

As for this time line, well facts can be made to fit what you want to them to prove. 09 the defense was seriously exposed in the regular season by quality quarterbacks. 10 was a 6 game run at the end of the year, which doesn't happen if Vick doesn't throw late, what would have happened in Atlanta if Ryan doesn't throw late. Williams was beat on both plays bad, good throws and no Super Bowl. 11, enough said, this team was a Vick late throw from being eliminated 3 straight years in the first round of the playoffs.

You realize how devoid of substance your overall analysis is when your criticism of the unit comes down to a handful of plays (if not single plays) in a season where there are roughly 800 + snaps on the defensive side?
I will be the last person to say this defense didn't have issues in 11' and Capers, McCarthy and Thompson don't deserve some type of criticism, but get over it. They regressed. They laid an egg. The disappointed everybody, including themselves, in the finally. Seek help.

MM's behavior to me suggests that he is as much in the coach - development business as he is in the player - development business. If I'm at least somewhat right, then MM may have an improved ability to attract talented coaches needing development at "value" prices.
