Packers Reportedly Agree To Three Year Deal With Letroy Guion

Green Bay locks up defensive lineman despite off field concerns.

The Green Bay Packers will reportedly be keeping Letroy Guion around.

From ESPN's Adam Caplan:

One of the few players on the Packers roster not drafted by Ted Thompson, Guion played well down the stretch in 2015. His previous off-field issues became a source of drama earlier this season and it would not have been a surprise to see the Packers let him walk away. But apparently the Packers are comfortable enough with Guion to keep him around.

I wonder if this spells adios to BJ Raji?

Seems a little pricey...but they couldn't really afford to lose both Raji and Guion. I'd still like to see both back, honestly. I think they made for a good tandem.

completely agree..

I really loved the 1-2 punch they brought. Raji was great on run downs and Guion was great on passing downs.

I hope they resign Raji too, but won't be surprised if they don't.

If you look at where the salary cap is projected to go this is Cheap, Cheap, Cheap.

Speaking of NTs, everyone was all up in arms about the 1 year, $4 million deal Terrance Knighton had to settle for in Washington and wished TT had brought him in. Anyone know what kind of year he had?

Up in arms for what? For the Packers not signing him?

"up in arms" might be a little strong, but yes, I strongly preferred Knighton to Raji, especially when the initial report seemed to suggest that the contracts were similar. Instead, it turned out that Knighton's deal was for 1 yr. $4.450 million (he had a $450K weight bonus that no one thinks he Knighton earned - so $4.5 million) and $2.95 mill guaranteed, whereas Raji ended up with $2.675 million.

Not entirely sure, but I went on Wash's SB nation website for our playoff game, and gathered that Knighton had some injuries, but that the fans liked what they got when he played. As I recall, McGinn noted that Linsley had a real tough time getting any movement against Knighton in the run game, causing several runs to get stuffed.

I'll wait to see how this is structured. The money strikes me as much too high, but the same thing happened last year with Raji, where the early reports were of a 1 yr, $3.5 million deal where he could earn up to $4 million (see link). I remember losing it, only it turned out that his cap was $1.75 million, and with incentives, Raji ended up earning $2.675 million last year, a far more reasonable amount. I don't think there is anyway Guion is likely to actually take home $3.75 million in 2016, but we will see. I'd guess there less than $500K is guaranteed. [Edit: it's a 3 year deal, so Guion probably gets $2 mill + in guarantees.]

I do like TT being proactive. I got tired of Raji waiting endlessly to see if some team might not offer more in 2014 (not as bad last year as he signed by the end of March). Not sure if this spells the end of Raji, but it does make him less of a need to sign. Overall, I'd offer Raji a modest amount. Course, I have the reputation of not liking Raji - never, ever give Raji a lot of guaranteed $.

Basically a million dollar a year raise with the cap likely to go up roughly $10 mil a year every year of the deal. This is a good deal for GB.

It is an outstanding deal. Not that many proven NT/DT types in the world.

How much of a cap hit do they take if he goes Nate Newton on them? At first glance I think I'd prefer Raji got this deal.

I agree WKU, it's a great deal for the Packers and Guion. Guion played well last season especially the last half of the season. With cap going up it's a very affordable deal for the Packers and one IMO they had to make. There's no promises they can keep Raji and at least Guion can get to the QB as well. In Free Agency the teams with $65 million in Cap Space to CRAZY things.

Erik Waldon..4 Years $16 Million
Tramon Wiliams... 3 years $21 Million
Devon House... 4 years $24 Million

Most of us on here were okay with those guys leaving, especially at those contract prices. This deal is good for Guion and the Packers. The thing about Guion is he's been steady both years he's been here. Raji had an okay year for the first time since 2012. I could see Raji doing a Albert Haynesworth the second he's got a multiple year deal for good money.

Nick, Guion did not play well last year. Did play better late.
2014: 32 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 4 stuffs, 1 pass defensed
2015: 21 tackles, zip sacks, zip FF, 2 stuffs, zip passes defended.

Despite some suggesting the deal is great, I am betting it is actually for less than advertised. Not saying he is grossly overpaid, but I was thinking 3 years for 9 million as more appropriate, with less than a $3 million signing bonus.

Thanks, should have done my homework like I normally do, my bad. I know he took a while to get going after the suspension but didn't know he was that unproductive. I tend to agree with you now, might be a little high based on last year. I'd bet the guaranteed isn't very much. Makes you wonder what Raji might be asking for. All in all I'm glad he's here though.

He'll be able to buy a lot of weed and guns with that money. I don't like this signing, the guy has lots of baggage. It smacks of one of those TT man-crushes, like Jarrett Bush, where he overpays for no reason.

Need to learn more about the guaranteed $ in this deal and see what happens with Raji, before I can say if I like the deal or not. To me Guion is a good backup player. Maybe this means that the Packers are looking to draft an impact DL in the first round with Guion as the backup. Given the baggage that Guion carries I was a little surprised to see this move but maybe TT has once again impressed himself with one of his alleged "diamonds in the rough". Thanks, Since '61

On first glance 3.75 mil per year - way too high. but i hope and thing this is incentive laden and not much guaranteed. need to see details before commenting. gut feel right now is overpaid way too much for an average player at best.
Raji is going to be a goner then, as I think that Ted will draft DL high (rounds 1 - 3)

Update: Sheesh, didn't even think about the fact that this dude was already suspended twice (thanks gnb.247). Next time suspension will be much longer. Draft class this year is deep at DL. And apparently, of all the FAs the Packers had, this guy was number 1 priority to get re-signed? Wow that looks worse and worse.

This draft is DEEEEP in Defensive Linemen. The Packers could draft a TE and ILB in rounds 1 & 2 and still get a quality D-Lineman in the 3rd round.

Big men, and trench warriors are hard to find. Obviously, the coaches like what Guion brings to the DLine. And, he is liked in the lockerroom.

I doubt that TT guarantees any more than he feels Guion will deliver. And, no doubt there are enough safeguards to cover in the event that Letroy decides to take the law into his own hands.

I like it. Our Dline was a strength last year and this is one block in the foundation.

Love the signing. The guy can and has played two positions well. With Pennel and draft picks this spells the end for Raji. Nice guy, but I'd take Guion over Raji anyday. Plus, one has to thank Raji for declining the 8+ mio/yr contract TT offered a few years ago. Saved TT arse on that one.

I am sure TT structured this deal to protect the Packers against injury or suspension. He always does with tier 2 type signings. I'm guessing that top # is full of per game roster bonuses, workout bonuses and incentives. So, it might be a bit early to declare the deal over-priced until we see the details.

Also, I think many of you need to recalibrate what you think is expensive for 330 pound NT/DE that has shown they can play and stay healthy in this league especially considering the significant increase in the cap number going forward. In my opinion, this seems like a team friendly deal and will be considered under market value by the end of June.

I like Guion better than Raji. Raji has self-motivation deficiencies, something his college coaches have said and we've seen it at the Pro level. Sometimes he just doesn't give you max effort.

He can play nose. The problem Ted he ain't that good. Neither is fat ass raji. How about real pass rushers in the middle. Not happening on this team. We're geared up to stop the mrun which is a passing league

This is probably a fiscally responsible move because (1) it ensures continuity at NT for the 2016 season and (2) it makes signing Raji a want, not a need.

As being reported today Guion's deal only includes $500,000 in guaranteed money. This is a great deal for the Packers.
