Packers Release Tremon Smith, Claim Tyler Ervin

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst announced earlier today that CB Tremon Smith was released after appearing in six games for Green Bay as their primary kick returner.

No time was wasted finding a replacement, as Gutekunst claimed former Jacksonville Jaguars RB Tyler Ervin off waivers, per Ian Rapoport.

Ervin was drafted in the fourth-round by the Houston Texans in 2016. He has totalled over 1,200 yards as a kick/punt returner in 31 career games as a Texan and Jaguar.

The Packers were given an exemption for Veldeer until he "gets in shape'.

I mean, does it really matter? Our punt and kick return coverage teams are horrendous. It won't matter who is returning kicks if they get tackled immediately

Trevor Davis was waived by Oakland after he had a really bad game Sunday. Replaced by LBer Marquel Lee returning from IR.

Interesting pickup. Gute keeps trying to improve the roster. Could be a decent returner and an extra RB. Go Pack Go!
Thanks, Since '61

Anything will be an improvement, no? Besides, maybe we'll catch lightning in a bottle for change.

Ervin for Smith is an interesting move by the GM.

Gutekunst must believe Ervin will hit a return lane ( hopefully a nice open lane ) with less hesitation and more acceleration and straight line speed than Smith.

Special Teams needs a spark and look forward to seeing if that spark is Tyler Ervin.
