Packers Release Three Players Including Swain, Havner

Veterans Brett Swain and Spencer Havner, who earned Super Bowl rings with the Packers last season, have been released.

Shortly before the Green Bay Packers were to return to the practice field at 11:15 to begin the final week of training camp, they announced the release of three players: wide receiver Brett Swain, tight end Spencer Havner and tackle Theo Sherman.

The NFL requires teams to trim their rosters down to 80 players by Tuesday. The Packers were at 86 players before the most recent transactions; they must release three more players in the next two days.

Swain is a third-year player who played in all 16 games a season ago and earned a Super Bowl ring in the process.

Havner is perhaps best known for scoring four touchdowns among seven regular season receptions in 2009.

Both signed restricted free agent tenders before the season. Releasing them before the mandatory cutdown to 53 players would appear to be a way of thanking the veterans for their contributions and giving them the most time to catch on with another team.

Sherman was an undrafted rookie who was working with the third-team offensive line.

That takes care of the obvious "tough" cuts. Now we get down to brass tacks in the battles for the roster spots. There are what, 13 guys legitimately battling for 10 spots at WR/TE?

Sorry to see Swain go, although it probably had to happen. He was coming along nicely before the knee. I still remember him stuffing the Bears fake punt at their own 40, which would have succeeded had it not been for one alert Brett Swain. I am forever indebted to him for wiping that disgusting smug grin off Lovie's face and replacing it with a classic "(gulp) I'm definitely getting fired for this one". Thanks, Brett.

Nice! Thanks for reminding us of that one. Havner and Swain will both find homes.

Does anyone know what happened to Jolly? Is he ineligible for the season or is he suspended?

Yeah and I can't imagine him being reinstated anytime soon. Hell, he may be in prison too long to ever even seek reinstatement.

He's not even in jail... He got cleared from the last arrest and went to rehab. I think he could easily be back once Neal gets hurt.
