Packers Question of the day - Who to Watch Against San Francisco?

It's a Packers business trip against a familiar foe. Only this time, the Packers will face the 49ers in the preseason. Not in a Divisional or Wild Card game against a speedy Colin Kaepernick, whose niche with the read-option was just kicking into gear against opposing defenses.

Among the storylines following the Packers to Santa Clara, California, the punting competition between veteran Tim Masthay and Green Bay native Peter Mortell is highlighted. Surprising, right? A punting competition - highlighted. It carries more weight for the special teams unit than one might think.

Eyes will be trained upon Carl Bradford and whether or not he can continue his steady progression at inside linebacker and if he can potentially be the reason Joe Thomas loses his job as the dime linebacker. Or even his roster spot in general.

With Aaron Rodgers set to get the start and see his first preseason action of 2016, it's likely Brett Hundley's injured ankle will keep him sidelined. Thus, paving the way for Joe Callahan and possibly providing an outlet for him to secure the third-string quarterback job. That is, if the team decides to enter the regular season with three quarterbacks.

Many storylines will follow the Packers heading into their exhibition matchup against the 49ers, but which one are you personally looking forward to?

I still think the young defensive backs are the most interesting .(Safeties)- Evans and Brice,( Corners)-Hawkins, Dorleant, and Daniel. I'm sure glad I don't have to make the cuts!

Tonight I will be watching to see how the starters look. Sounds like Rodgers will be playing so to see how he looks, and to see how he looks with his WR's, and with Cook.

After seeing the starters I am looking at the competitions going on.

RB - Crockett and Burks. Who steps up to earn the #3 spot.

TE - Perillo and Backman. Perillo is ahead of Backman but does Backman continue to step up and take the #3 job away?

WR - Davis and Allison. I don't think they are necessarily competing against each other for a spot on the 53 against each other. But both are competing for jobs. With Thompsons track record of not cutting draft picks I don't see them cutting Davis.

ILB - Ryan, Bradford and Thomas - Bradford and Thomas have both played really well. Do they force them to keep 5 ILB's? I want to see Ryan play for the first time this preseason.

OLB - Elliott and McCray - McCray has performed well. Does he overtake Elliott on the roster?

Punter - Masthay and Mortell - Who wins? Does tonight's game decide who wins the punting competition?

ILB: I'm interested to see if Martinez is out with the 1s on running downs.

NT: Does Clark look like he belongs starting in Jacksonville?

PR/KR: Can Davis lock down a job as key special teams contributor?

Gunner: If not Janis or Goodson, then who?

IMO, Martinez has earned the starting ILB job. He is to good already to take off the field.

Clark - Does he play? I haven't heard anymore about his back injury.

That is where i want to see Davis a lot - PR/KR. Can he pull a Desmond Howard and become the main return man during the last 2 games?

I would like to see if Brice can be a gunner. He has really good speed.

I'm with you but I'm trying to contain my exuberance for Martinez. I've been high on his potential since draft day. Trying to make sure I'm not wearing rose colored glasses.

I agree with all several of these comments. 4 things I am watching for:

* Can we cover an RB or TE in the read option? - good test for our LBs. We need to have someone other than Martinez cover, and Thomas was brought back for that very reason last year.
* With Rodgers playing, will our receivers get seperation, or is it the same as last year?
* The gunner opposite Banjo and gunner blockers will give you an understanding who the Packers like, and who is likely to make the roster from the DB/WR ranks.

Should have added:

CB - Gunter, Hawkins, Daniel, and Dorleant - potentially battling for 2 spots on the 53.

S - Brice - does he continue making his case for being on the 53? I hope to see him as a gunner (like you said).

Definitely the LBs. I wanna see Ryan show if he can compete with Martinez for that starting spot. Or maybe it will be Barrington on the bubble who knows? I am also interested in watching Davis and Abby. We need a young guy to step up because Davante is the most inconsistent player on the field.

That is an interesting take. Is Barrington on the bubble? I don't think he is. But as long as he has been in Green Bay he has missed a lot of games. So is he entrenched as a starter?
Maybe Ryan overtakes Barrington and starts next to Martinez?

I'm still waiting for Allison and/or Davis to show something in a real live game. It's a lot of talk surrounding the two.

Besides Offense, I'm still intrigued by the Defense.

Lowry is really standing out. I hope he can continue to stack his productivity. I'm also keeping an eye on Bradford, McCray and Datone.

Kaperdick. Do not want to see him have any thought of reurrecting his career against us this week. Quite the opposite.

Those days are done. We have the cover corners and the Safety (HHCD) that sniffs out the read-option. That no longer worries me.

I would like to see Rodgers to cook. First play, play action to Eddie and hit Cook down the seam for 20.

That would be perfect. Followed on the next possession by a very long deep throw for a TD, to pick one. Jordy, Adams, (yes I can dream), Monty, Abbredersis, Davis....

I will be looking for any Packer rookie (plus Ringo/Backman/Bradford types) who wind up playing against the SF 1st string for a series or two.

I want to see some of these prospects stack success of that type.

You have Perillo and Backman fighting for the 3rd spot or do you see 4 TEs making it?

I just want to see Aaron Rodgers play. After a few plays get him out of the game. Once I know Rodgers is Ok the rest doesn't matter. Thanks, Since '61
