Packers Question of the Day: Two Games Enough?

Thomas Davis was suspended on Monday for his illegal helmet-to-helmet hit on Davante Adams in the third quarter of Sunday's game. The suspension is for two games, however, Davis is expected to appeal it and hope that the suspension is docked to a single game, much like Danny Trevathan earlier this season.

Is two games enough for Davis, who is a repeat offender?

Has he appealed? If so, and the number is still 2 games, I'll applaud the league for making a stand.

If he hasn't appealed, you know it will be cut to 1 game when he does. The answer is, no, 1 game isn't enough so 2 games wasn't enough.

I'm betting it gets reduced to 1.

The penalty should be that the offending player sits until the injured player is (or would have been cleared.)

If I'm asked (but nobody will ask me), I will make that kind of hits reviewable, so coaches can challenge the ruling on the field... If there will be referees who overlooked that kind of hits, they should be fined as well...

Beside fines, players will be immediate ejected and automatically suspended for one game. If player will repeat that kind of hit, he will be suspended for 8 weeks and for possible play off games, for the third hit, he will be suspended indefinitely...

I think that will stop players from harming others people long term health...

I think the league pretty much limited itself to 1 game by it’s stupid Gronk decision. And all those Seahawk a-holes got nothing. However, since Richardson got caught playing grabass in the office, maybe Rog isn’t as scared of him as he is of Kraft and Allen.

The Gronk ruling was a bigger travesty than Trevathan or Davis. The play is clearly over, the player is prone and defenseless, and he drops a shoulder on him? Put him in the concussion protocol? Gronk said "the right things" after the game, acted contrite, but it shouldn't matter. The act is the act.

That he didn't get 4 or 6 games out of that mess was a fiasco all by itself.

The union will get the league to backdown to 1 game, ala Danny Trevathan. The precedent has been set. The NFL has no leadership on either side of the equation. A bunch of guys making millions who just react their way through misbehaviors. Its lack of integrity is more evident each year. For a game I really like - it is sad.

I am assuming it will get reduced to 1 game.

IMO, it isn't enough. He needed to be ejected during the game and miss the following week. That is why the NFL needs to adapt the targeting rules. For plays like this, or Gronk's hit.
Get rid of that type of crap.

I like the idea brought up on a radio show that I listen to. Have a 2 level flagrant foul type of thing. Flagrant 1 is a 15 yard penalty, and the next flagrant 1 is an ejection for that player. Flagrant 2 is immediate ejection and 15 yard penalty, also that player is suspended for the following week.

Plays like Davis, Gronk, Trevathan all would have been a Flagrant 2 and immediate ejection.

They didn't want him suspended for any possible playoff game. Not right, when you consider that had GB won on Sunday, this Saturday would have effectively been another playoff game and Adams is the biggest (only?) consistent offensive weapon we had.

The league has become a complete joke in terms of enforcing their "rules". They can't get the calls correct on the field with about 15 different camera angles for replay, why would we expect them to enforce the appropriate suspension for Davis or anyone else?

As Dobber correctly pointed out in his post the Gronk hit was a travesty. IMO, that was malicious intent and he should have been suspended for the remainder of the season including the playoffs. But that would take a real commissioner as opposed to the current puppet commissioner. Believe me calling Goodell a puppet is an insult to the rest of the puppets out there.

With flags flying on almost every play and then replay upon replay the games have become unwatchable and they still get the calls wrong. I say put Capers in charge of officiating and then we can really see confusion and lack of communication in the officiating. Then at least the rest of the league would know what we have been going through in Green Bay for the last 7 seasons. Thanks, Since '61

The league doesn't review appeals. It goes to a third party both the league and the players union has agreed on for arbitration.

Should have been an immediate ejection for the current game.... And THEN and only Then can they appeal whatever how many days after that. But regardless. Ejecting immediately would shut a lot of this shit down

No. Just no. This league cannot survive modern medical realities if star players can be neutralized in this way. It kills the game for casual fans that bring in the big money. Moreover, it will deter future players over time.

If the league does not make clearly non incidental hits like these grievously painful for both players and clubs the game is in real trouble.

Put simply this was a wholly inadequate response to an individual incident and, more generally places the league in a dangerous position. This is far from the only hit of its type this season. The league is slapping players and clubs on the wrist for career threatening behavior. This cannot be adequate for the league or for football lovers.
