Packers Question of the day - Seven Receivers?

This whole wide receiver debacle is getting out of hand at this point. Many speculations have been made as to how the Packers will approach this situation at the start of the season.

The truth is, it's a mystery where Jordy Nelson is in his recovery right now, especially after tweaking his opposite knee. Despite it being called a 'hiccup', it's still perfect clause for fans to enter the preseason somewhat cautious on his situation.

Jeff Janis, who is almost a lock to make the final roster due solely to his gunner ability on the special teams, has been a no-show in training camp as far as the receiver position goes. Whereas Jared Abbrederis, who was once the odd man out to many, has shown up to play football and start the season healthy - a rarity for him.

It's also safe to say Trevor Davis may not be going anywhere but the practice squad, but really, who knows at this point. Having the overloaded receiving corps may be a problem, but it's a damn good one. With all of the talent surrounding this skill position and the questions surrounding Nelson, should the Packers go into the season with seven wide receivers?

I think it also has to do with the numbers/quality GB keeps at other position groups: is that #7 WR a better value than, say, a ninth OL or a 3rd QB, etc?

I figured Monty was headed PUP DTR status, which would kick the can down the road for a few weeks (week 6?)

His practice last night kind of throws that out the window

And he's adamant that Abbrederis is GOING TO get hurt, not that the Packers will cut him. If you could predict that to that level of certainty, there would be players that would never be on anyone's roster...it's "Minority Report" applied to roster management.

I think anyone of those guys will be picked up if released. I believe there is to much pre -judgement, on everyones' part, regarding this group. Especially since a pre-season game has not been played yet. Cobb clearly is above them all. But lets look at adams. He would have been replaced by Montgomery as the #3. Montgomery would have never been drafted that high, if TT was happy with Adams and the depth. If he's worth keeping, why are there any doubts he'll be great. Janis is a Don Beebe. To expect him to be a #3, is a long investment. But The packers will use him up. James Jones should be on that list. But instead, we have a new guy to force on the field. Interesting draft pick, since a Rb was wanted by everyone first. But he's the next Jennings now. And Allison will be better than Abby. So why is there any lack of vision for these guys. I'll bet these guys find the field and all do fantastic. If management does not think they'll be great, Cut them. I don't see the logic in keeping an over paid back-up. Or keeping a draft pick if a free-agent is better.

For once Cow has a logical answer, I believe on the live updates today Monty was taken out of practice, they did not know at the time the reason (limited reps - heat - some type of injury). Microfracture surgery for top athletes today in major sports has equated to the old "Achilles Heal" injury from the 50's - 70's where it virtually ended careers, although not to that degree most who have come back were never at the same level. You have to give Cow credibility when he has it and I believe in this case he does.

I am happy that was the case, limiting his reps but Cow still has a very valid point in regards to the severity of the injury and the history regarding it, and hopefully Montgomery is the exception to the rule, time you guys give Cow a break.

In reference to the extent of Montgomery's here is the info posted on the Lombardi Avenue web site “Montgomery said his surgery contained three parts: tight ropes inserted into his ligaments to hold them in place, a cartilage repair and — perhaps most serious — a microfracture procedure on his talus (a bone between the heel and fibula and tibia).” Now if that is not a SERIOUS INJURY, the Ed Laces is a medical GENIUS.

No we don't, simply because Cow makes one positive comment for every 99 negative comments. Most of his "Predictions" are just wrong, so why should we give credibility?

Montgomery actually pushed it when he returned to practice and the coaches had him on a Rep count. The guy just came back from a injury, one that kept him out for the last 10 months. Do you really think there wouldn't be a rep count??

With AR as your QB I believe that it makes the most sense to keep at least 6 and maybe 7 WRs if possible. AR is the strength of team so why not provide him with as many of the best weapons as possible, especially if Jordy is unable to go at the beginning of the season. If i were TT I would be preparing a list of possible WR signings once the cut downs take place around the league in preparation for the possible loss of Nelson and any other WRs. We should be looking for candidates who can get separation and catch the ball. Assuming Jordy returns I would keep Jordy, Cobb, Monty, Adams, Davis, and Janis. Abby if we keep 7 WRs. As for the WR situation getting out of hand, that is only in the mind of the media. At this time of year or any time of the season, having too many quality WRs is a great problem to have. Thanks, Since '61

I agree Since '61. The Packers have kept 5 TE's, 3 FB's, they've always kept "More" at a position other teams probably wouldn't. So why not 7 WR's with the best QB in the game? Plus we haven't even played a Preseason Game, lots of things can Happen between now and September 11th in Jacksonville.

WHAT'S NEW:
"Thumbs down

Coach Mike McCarthy’s seventh practice in pads since camp began 15 days ago contained 77 plays of 11-on-11 competition. It was a hot but almost windless night, and both Rodgers and his teammates on offense probably were as sharp as they have been all summer. He was rifling the ball all over the yard, and often times the passes were deadly accurate. Once again, however, WR Jeff Janis had almost no production. Of his six targeted throws, Janis’ lone catch was on a bubble screen. On his second-to-last attempt, Janis ran some type of hook on second-and-8 but CB Randall Jette shouldered inside of him and intercepted Joe Callahan’s pass. His last target came on third-and=3 to begin an all-out blitz period. Lined up wide left, Janis ran an inside-breaking route and the pass from Rodgers fell inconplete at the first-down marker. Rodgers didn’t appear to say anything, but his body language suggested that he wasn’t happy with the route. With Jordy Nelson still sidelined and Ty Montgomery sitting out until Tuesday night, Janis in some ways has squandered an opportunity to establish himself as a player to reckon with on offense."

I guess the question is: what do you consider Janis? Is he a WR and counts against WR numbers or is he a ST player in his own category? Jarrett Bush turned out to be a ST player and emergency DB later in his career. He really didn't count against CB or S numbers.

At this stage in his career, he's still al developmental WR. Other analysts have likened Janis to Bill Schroeder, but Schroeder didn't bust out until year 6 of his career. Others have pointed to Nelson taking at least 3 years to get his career on point. I might argue that Janis proved himself as being good enough, and having the potential to be an elite ST player, that he might merit his own category and be an "emergency WR" if he's still a bonehead on offense, while still waiting to see if the light ever goes on.

Cut Janis, Cut Adams, Cut Abbey. Throw in Khyri Thornton, Cut Carl Bradford, cut Demetri Goodson. And because we have Cook lets cut Richard Rodgers. (The speed just isn't there.) The 2014 draft just became a Failure. Still trust in TT? The 2014 draft was considered the strongest in years by most scouts. But yet you want Adams, who is the same player as Janis. Lets compare who can help the club the most.

I think you guys really missed the point with this post. It was written because of the negativity of Janis. ( Espn has a nice article on Janis still learning.) I was trying to show the comparison/indication of who could help the club the most. Janis is the guy that would be the hardest to replace of the 2014 draft picks. (Excluding Ha Ha) His gunner role and kickoffs set him apart from the 2014 draft class. If TT was sold on Adams, or Abbey, Monty would not have been drafted. Abbey was a good pick, but as we see, the roster spot is coming down to Abbey or Davis. (Both 5th picks) But the reality of the posts have the 2014 class hotly disputed. So if Janis got cut with Adams who comes in for Nelson on the depth chart? Whose after Cobb? Monty. I believe Cobb can back up Nelson. Monty can easily take Cobbs slot. But can Adams or Janis or Abbey? Thats why I asked if you still Trust TT. Because look at the cuts that are being talked about in the 53 roster prediction. My problem with the 2014 draft. I would never have taken Adams or Thornton. (But TTs staff left. So that must have been the reason) Next big battle other than WR? Linsey or Tretter .

Watched a NFL Network discussion with the Patriot's (Belichick led) backup QB this morning that highlighted - I believe - a missed McCarthy led Packers discussion point. The discussion centered around injuries - forever this blogs favorite excuse - and how a QB must ADAPT too the next man up.

I watched a divisional game last year that showcased Janis's route running abilities and awareness; off the line battles won, timed routes, open zone selection, slants, quality sideline work, outstanding burst with separation, adjustments to defenders sitting, yet I here, it's not polished enough. Confusing at best…also Abby looked the part of a polished slot receiver.

I watched both Abby and Janis in that game, and it seems AR finally gave in and ADAPTED or both were just that much better then what was fielded for the previous 17 games. Confusing at best…again.

I agree with the article in one aspect. One of the last years WR group must go. Shake things up, a group wake up call of sorts. If Janis can't adapt, he should be gone.

The articles funnies:
“It took two train wrecks and plane crash to get Janis on the field last year and yes, he did make some plays in that game against the Cardinals” ‘some plays’ LOL, Janis was a monster!
“I think the final cut will leave Nelson, Cobb, Adams, Abbrederis, Montgomery and Davis. I don’t see them keeping six receivers.” What did I miss...

Of course let’s not forget - relative to the final 53 - that all this discussion is pointless prior to a single pre-season game.

I do hope Richard Rogers does not falter. Janis will be grabbed in a hurry if he gets cut. But I don't believe he will. 1. He is going to be in on kick-offs. 2. He will be in on the punt coverage. This area needed improvement, and Janis gave them what they were lacking. 3. We look for Janis to be that #3.WR. That just is not going to happen. But Janis can go deep to spread defenses. Even with that train wreck, and the cardinals great Defense , Janis caught the ball with separation. After the first three WRs who is going to be fresh enough to come off the bench. I say Janis, because of his ability to help the team in other areas. I think the final cut will leave Nelson,Cobb, Monty, Janis, Davis and hopefully Abbey. Abbey is better than Adams, Janis, and Davis at routes. But speed, and who spreads the defenses, will win out. Janis will learn, but he is needed more than Adams and Abbey. He's the guy who can replace Monty,Adams,Abbey,Davis, etc., if needed. I don't believe anyone on the roster can replace Nelson or Cobb.

I agree and disagree. 1. It’s going to take a great to a superman camp for an UFA to take Janis’s spot as a gunner. 2. Janis KO return stat of 28.1 is at the top in the league. 3. With Adams gone, automatically places the #3 tag on Janis? Monty, Abby, and Cobb are prototypical slots and do not belong outside (maybe Abby) and Davis and Allison - the latter is trending - first will need to make the final 53, but most of all, will need a long year in the weight room.

Note of concern; Monty, along with others, based on recent notes should start catching the ball.

Drooling for pre-season, pads and competition…

I'd be amazed if the spindly, relatively slow (4.67 forty at the combine, 4.56 - per draftscout, 4.62 per CBS, at his pro day) Geronimo Allison becomes one of our gunners. His 1.65 10 yard dash is nothing to write home about, either. He didn't lift at the combine or at his pro day.

I like Allison as a WR - but I think he'll have to make the team as a WR, and not due to STs. 2 TDs in practice today for Allison. BTW: there are wildly different descriptions are given by the major scouting pundits on Allison.

The way they were playing the WR's last season and Adams forgetable performance every Sunday Janis should have at least had a few opportunities to stretch the defense per game and he showed he could do that in the playoffs. Remember Corey Bradford, much like Janis, pure speed and ran go patterns 3 out of 4 times for the Packers and then Houston for almost a decade in the league, he did just what you are suggesting Portland Mark and had a nice career, he not only had a nice average gain per catch and close to 40 TD's in his career but he opened it up for everyone else as well.

Ok So Ted takes a guy named Janis from Saginaw State. He is 6'3 and very fast but he is from Saginaw State. He was a receiver, for Saginaw state.

We packer fans accept the guy thinking wow, could be a diamond in the rough.
After what three seasons now he is missing in practice still.

Ted should have saved everyone a lot of angst by giving this guy a mental aptitude exam. Ted he went to Saginaw state for a reason. Time to put him to pasture. He is taking up wasted space

Yes, in the SEVENTH ROUND, TT took a receiver from SVSU. What are you looking for in a 7th rounder? He's stuck on the roster and has carved out an influential niche. It's not catching passes, but he's arguably among the best in the league at what he does on special teams. It might not be enough to save a spot on the roster this season, but those things count, too.

Geronimo has terrific potential, and I'm a huge fan of his ever since I watched this youtube highlight video the day after we signed him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGEd1UDjcjY
Nonetheless, I'd be fine having him on the PS this year, as an emergency fill-in when Jordy or Monty, or Abby goes down again. At this point I'm expecting T Davis to be on the PS as well. Other teams MAY try to pick up GA or TD, but that's the risk you take when you have an area of depth.

Watching highlight videos is of questionable value. I watched and determined that Allison is tall, he can run after the catch, particularly if there is no defender between him and the end zone, and can catch the ball away from his body. Lots of double clutch catchesthough. It is hard to watch route running on this. Like most highlight videos, Allison looks pretty good.
