Packers Question of the day - Draft talk

It's about that time again where we begin addressing just where the Packers have the most leaks on their roster.

We already know they'll have a relatively low pick - sometime in the latter stages of the first round, since the first 20 picks are already in order.

Based off of the regular season and what we've seen so far position-by-position, what position groups should the Packers target in the first three rounds?

I think most will say CB first, but I'm going edge rusher. They're likely to lose Peppers, CMIII has been enigmatic, and Perry still can't stay healthy. They've got to have help on the outside. TJ Watt, anyone? ;)

I think they need a CB in the first three rounds. Otherwise, mine for gold and find the best player they can get at just about any position (except maybe safety or QB).

In a pretend world, I'd sure like them to get aggressive with a CB in FA and then use draft choices at some positions that can help immediately. As you say...OLB.

In the actual world run by Ted Thompson, I think they stand pat and try to get their current group healthy. CB is one of those positions that takes a long time, and developing draft choices and/UDFA from scratch in an extremely complicated defense may not get us anything better than waiting for the current guys.

What is the third word in 'draft and develop'? Develop. When this is your philosophy, immediate impact is not part of the equation so filling immediate needs via the draft is a contraction in terms. In reality, it's the 3rd year players in the D&D approach who is expected to come into their impact years and start filling those needs. So who do we have coming into their 3rd years that even look like they can step up and fill our coming needs?

Remember how most folks thought about Adams last year and how he's pretty much come into his own this year. Can the same happen with Randall and Rollins and Gunter at CB?

My picks are the ABSOLUTE best possible players at ANY position except QB, OT & C for the 1st three rounds. Depth or upgrades at any other position would be great. We need both.

You have an idealized notion of Draft and Develop in GB. Draft and need are not contradictions in GB's philosophy: that is the myth.

2016: Clark and Martinez were drafted to play immediately. Spriggs, Fackrell, Davis, Murphy were given red shirt years.

2015: Randall, Rollins, probably Ryan were drafted to play early in year one. Monty, Rip, and Ringo got red shirt years. No one knows why Backman was drafted at all rather than being a UDFA, except TT.

2014: Dix and Adams were intended to play early. RR and Thornton are just mysteries. Linsley was probably drafted to be a back up since we had Tretter. Abby probably just as a contributor at most early.

2013: Lacy to start, Jones to rotate, Tretter to challenge EDS for snaps & as insurance, rest probably given a red shirt year.

Everyone here wants to draft a running back at some point when we could have all four of Ty Montgomery, Eddie Lacy, Christine Michael and Aaron Ripkowski for cheap. Lacy's injury history and recent weight issues will keep him from getting a large contract from virtually everyone, unless it's an incredibly desperate team in which there probably isn't. Guy can be signed for a 1-2 year deal for no more than about 3.5 million a year. That's about as good a 4 player backfield as one can hope to have, yet everyone wants to move on from the league's best tackle breaking RB Eddie Lacy for some reason.

You can never have too many pass rushers, and Clay will be 31 next year, plus he hasn't been good since last year. Nick Perry should be resigned, even if he asks for even a little too much, we simply need him and that's all there is to it. But I also think Datone Jones and especially Kyler Frackell will develop into decent players next year. Datone will likely get a one year prove it deal much like Nick this year.

O linemen will be a weak position in this years draft. Pass rushers and RBs should be plentiful.

As a general rule I would resign Lang and/or Tretter along with Cook, and get pass rushers and CBs early with RB in the mid rounds. However, I would not reach for any of them if they weren't graded highly enough.

I understand the direction of that pick, but Jake Butt blew his ACL on Saturday, and they're reporting that it was pretty bad (as far as ACL injuries go). I realize that "routine" ACL injuries are not the career threatening injuries they once were, but I don't think any GM is going to blow a second round pick on him.

That works great for the pats giants dallas teams with little need. This teamhas to fill holes, big freekin holes. Our corners arents and our pass rushers arent and are lin backers are limted in coverage skills.
Re structure mathews monster contract too to get money for free agents. The draft only does so much.

I'm on the Switzer bandwagon right with you. Love him.

I like Lawson, but he's shorter than I like for OLB and has a history of being banged up. Butt is probably back at Michigan next year with that knee injury. I'd target Bucky Hodges or Jordan Leggitt as other options.

Interested to see how fast Awuzie runs. Some think he may be better fit at safety. If that's the case we don't need him. Need boundary corners, especially not knowing Shields future and Randall's regression.

I like the idea to get Butt cheaply. He's a high work ethic guy. He'll rehab himself just fine.

A lot of folks will clamor for a a RB. But I think the Group of Monty, Lacy, Michael and Rip is just fine.

I like our RB's for next year should Lacy and CM re-up but I STILL would like to get a RB in the 1st 4 rounds instead of another UDFA. One of those guys will more than likely go down next year and we need someone to work their way into a starters roll in a few years when Lacy or CM wears out.

Speaking strictly 1st round...

Best defensive player available. Need help at all levels other than safety, so I wouldn't zero in on a specific one.

I would deviate from that if players like McCaffery, Corey Davis or John Ross are still around. Dalvin Cook would be dream scenario, but that ship has sailed after running the table. I think these guys are special enough to contribute immediately. Don't quite trust Ty yet as the long term answer at RB.

With SO many players about to hit FA it's hard zero in more than that right now, IMO. Need to see how that shakes out. Let's hope we don't lose Wolf in the meantime...

Peppers is overrated. Glad to hear someone else say it. :)

McCaffery needs the right team. The way we spread D's out with zone runs fits him perfectly. Not to mention he's a phenomenal pass catcher. He's proven he can shoulder a heavy workload as well. I like him more than most probably, but I do feel it's a great match.

100% agree on McCaffery - if he's a guy you're taking in the 3rd/4th as a 10 touch per game player, ok by me, but he's not a RD1 player to me. Same with Peppers.

Davis and Ross would look marvelous in green & gold...

Everybody selling McCaffery short! :)

This kid has handled A LOT of touches. Has speed (not elite, but good), vision and agility. Natural pass catcher. Only knock for me is he doesn't have prototypical size, but he's a well built kid. No doubt he has first round talent, but again, comes down to scheme fit and we're a good match.

Didn't say that, I said IF. At this point I'd say no based on the consensus rankings and how highly draftniks think of him. I doubt Ross is available either, unless teams find issues with his recent knee injuries.

All I'm saying is I'd deviate from BPA on defense for a special offensive talent that falls. A lot changes between now and the end of April. Maybe Davis runs a 4.6 and he drops on teams boards a bit. We also don't have a grasp at this point for how many QB's could/will be taken in the first to push talent at other positions down the board. A lot of unknowns to say for sure one way or the other.

I think Ty is a great 3rd down back and call always fill in if needed at other times. And when he's not in at RB, he can always line up in the slot or out wide. Such a dangerous weapon with so much flexibility.

Starks should just retire gracefully and Lacy should resign for 1-2 years. CM is still a wild card but a full off season in the system and being coached may prove to be what we need. If so, we can stick with late rounders or UDFA's to develop for a few years down the road.

This is a pretty loaded question without having all the and answers. Such as which free agents will we resign, will we sign any other free agents.

That being said I think the first 3 picks ideally would be at OLB, CB and TE.

Assuming they resign Lacy, RB isn't a top need at that point. But I would like to see them add another player to the position later in the draft.

With Jordy back, and Adams taking a step up WR isn't as glaring of a need. But like RB I would like to see them get another WR in the draft.

OL, they always need to spend at least a middle round pick on 1.
DL like OL they always need to add players to the position.

OLB is one of the biggest needs even if Perry comes back. They need to continue to improve the pass rush.
ILB, isn't viewed as high, but need to add another player to the position.

CB, assuming Shields career is done CB is a high priority position. I like Rollins, Randall and Gunter, but as seen this year, an injury or 2 and your depth his hit hard.

Picking at 32, I'm not sure who will still be there. If they're available though (highly unlikely) my top 3 guys in the draft class are Jonathan Allen, Malik Hooker, and Desmond King. Any of them would be a dream. I think Garrett, Fournette, and Peppers are overrated.

True about the speed, but I've heard he could be a great FS. I like Ha-Ha, but he's no Nick Collins. My dream scenario this offseason would be to have Burnett add weight and play the hybrid LB position permanently, move Dix to SS, and either move Randall to FS, or trade up for Hooker. King in the second would be a steal though.

On the overall direction of the discussion - I think the target "need" groups are EDGE/TE/DB.

EDGE for the fact that we have 3 FA's & didn't really see anything from 51 or 91 that says long term answer.

TE - would be nice to resign Cook, but that's not a guarantee. If that doesn't happen, I'd prefer a similar style guy - pass catcher/seam stretching talent. If we do resign Cook, then this slides a little down the list for me.

CB - Unclear on Shields' future... and even if all 3 of the young guys DO pan out, depth and talent here are critical to win in this league.

If TE slides, I'd replace it with DL - Guion/Pennel aren't long for the team in the future, and as much as I like Clark & Lowry, if you could add another interior rusher, that would really help the D.

I hope they get another superstar (any position) like Aaron to fall in their lap.

Assumption: the players available will be of equal value, otherwise just pick the best player available.

So, I would think their priority should be outside linebacker first; corner back second; defensive line third.

Wow! Along with the already present mock drafts isn't this a bit early for this/
First and foremost we likely need to wait to see where the "will he stay or will he go" thing(s) with Thompson and Wolf end up.
Should Thompson relinquish the GM duties, and Wolf assume that job, you might get a guy more willing to play in free agency like his father did. That could change a lot of things.
Another issue are the 'Lines'. This season has shown that you must have quality back-ups in the O-Line to play the Packer offense effectively while at the same time our many first round picks on the D-Line have been more or less invisible putting more pressure on the D-backs.
Mix in all the free agents the Packers are facing within their present roster and I'll wait a while to think about the draft

No matter where Green Bay picks, there are lots of good players out there that can make a difference in Packerland. Let's say that ILB from Alabama is available....does TT pull that trigger? Can Sam Shields make it back? If he does...how long will he last? The draft is something like a 1,000 piece picture puzzle and the good GMs seem to know which pieces go where for their team. TT is one of the best at that. (Scoff if you will, but that is the opinion of most experts.)
I see pass rusher and DT as keys myself, with CBs, TE, and RBs right behind. But then what the heck do I know?

Packers should look at getting a solid cornerback in FA. Not only to fill a need, but mentor all the young guys; letting Hayward go was a big blunder by TT. Assuming they go CB in free agency & sign Cook at TE, 1st = Edge (Watt?) 2nd = WR 3rd = DL

That sounds pretty good, Lphill. I would like a proper boundary receiver, not a slot guy (which is sort of what you were saying). I'd like another TE with good speed, to stretch the middle of the field. Then RB, maybe guard.

OLB, WR, CB, TE, RB would plug a lot of holes. You could juggle around the 2,3,4 picks, WR/CB/TE, in pretty much any order. Later picks (comp 5th, 6th, 7th) could be anywhere, with guard as one possible pick, depending on how the Packers view last years pick, Murphy..

Order is dependent on how the team sets-up it's board (BPA):

CB - a premier talent is absolutely needed; especially, with S.Shields' career likely being over too early

OLB - they must add young difference maker(s) to the edge rushing group

TE - if they can land themselves a player in the mold of a true difference-maker at the position I think they need to seize it

If they don't believe there's a TE worthy of a 1st to 3rd round pick then perhaps double up on either a quality CB or Pass Rusher.

Well a lot of people didn't get their wish, picking in the top 20 , maybe even 10 to 15 range. The Pack proved a lot of people wrong (including myself). I was looking at the silver lining of getting some quality picks if the Packers missed the playoffs and finished around .500. Well here we are again for the 8th straight year, and will be picking from the bottom of the barrel. BPA, period.

A lot of good players are still available- do the math - number of college teams with players graduating - divided by 32. My issue is that with all of the losses of staff to other organizations over the past few years - there has to have been some effect on the drafting/scouting departments. We need to ensure that we get the best value for our picks when picking between 20 and 32 and we seem to have had a problem with getting the best of those. But the team is still pretty solid and when other teams are signing your cut players, you know that you have done a good job drafting and developing. Think that we need to I dont see teams picking near the top winning everything the following year.

How about a couple of 4.65 speed corners who are 5'10 190, played at second rate colleges and will come cheap. They can fit right in with theguys we have now.! Why wold you try and get a couple of free agents who dont need development, can step in and Fucking contribute today not three years from now.

Hoping Rajii unretires and returns to the Pack - about time to pick a good running back perhaps in the 2nd or 3rd round - need an impact back. If Eddie comes back - he will /should be more of the fullback version - stop making him a scat back. Image both him and Ripper in the backfield on short downs. We need some more fast linebackers and unless there is an impact TE available - would go there first. IF our injured defensive backfield is healthy - think we have the talent ( and now the experience) to get us through - and some lower picks and street free agents will add to the depth. And lets get us an impact punter.

For me it is never to early to talk about the draft. Let me take a little bit of your time and arm chair GM the Packers first few rounds of the draft, hope you can dig it!

Round 1 - O.J Howard Tight end, Bama. Cook improved this offense but he is getting up there in age and not a long term answer at the Packers weakest offensive position. Howard is under used as a pass catcher at Bama because he is actually a good blocker (as far as college tight ends go) Watch him against Myles Garrett, he more than holds his own in blocking the maybe first overall pick. In a few years he could be considered a top tight end in the league.

Round 2 - T.J Watt OLB, Wisco. This is my homer pick but if he is there in the second round this could be a huge pick up. He would add a lot to our pass rush and can hold his own in coverage and in the run game. Wouldn't be shocked if he ends up being a first round pick come draft day.

Round 3 - Kevin King Corner, Washington. In a draft class stacked with corner talent, this corner could drop a round lower than where he should be picked. A long corner at 6'2 he has been called a Seahawk corner type. I wouldn't mind one of those guys on our team. I think Rollins and Randall will improve when healthy but adding a player who can challenge the outside numbers would be a big boon to the pass D.

Round 4 - Jake Replogle DL, Purdue. I first heard of this guy when watching the Badgers embarrass the boilermakers a month or so back. While his team was getting stomped on, Jake did nothing but make plays. He clogged up the run game and got a lot of pressure on Hornibrook. Think of Dean Lowery but without the t-rex arms. High effort, long, strong, and tough. Should be taken higher in the draft based on talent but his only position in the nfl is a 5 technique in a 3-4 pushes him down. I really like his tape and in the years to come our D-line will host a lot of good players from Daniels, Clark, Lowery, Replogle, etc.

Well that is my take on the draft, playing GM is fun haha.

I can talk draft any time too. Love the draft.

Actually previewing the draft during the season isn't that bad of an idea because the team needs are more fresh in your head.

I have been a fan of Howard for a while. If they would resign Cook and add Howard they would have their most explosive pair of TE's they have ever had. Howard would add a lot to the offense.

I already said how much I like Watt. I think he has a huge upside. I think as the draft nears he will be making his way into the 1st round area.

He'll land in the first round as a 1-2 tweener because he plays hard, he's likely to test well, he's been productive on a good team in a power conference, and he plays a marquee position. Those guys land in the first round....you've got to pay for those guys.

I will admit I am bad at evaluating pass rushers, the dirty secret is that 90% of the time they don't do anything. But watching Watt play is fun. He tries hard and gets results. Come February and the combine rolls around will be see how athletic his truly is. I would bet he is a top performer.

Gotta agree with COW on this one. TJ Watt is not JJ Watt. He's Kyler Fackrell.

If being JJ Watt's brother were important, Derek Watt would be a stud.

Lawson (Auburn) or McKinley (UCLA) are better choices for D1. Unless Watt lights the world on fire at the combine or pro day, maybe I see value in D3. But as things stand I don't see him as a Top-50 guy.

Don't really care about position. I just hope Ted goes for BPA and there is a Pro Bowl type player available at pick #32.

If we can score one upgrade at any position, anywhere. Oof, thats a tough one but a guy like Aaron Donald comes to mind. Someone like that who can take pressure off edge rushers and still collapse the pocket from the middle would be worth gold. Everyone on D instantly gets better and we go from middle of the road to D to a top 10. Hard to do that at any other position on D.

It might take a package of picks and players to move up to a pick high enough to land a guy like that but the reward would be worth the price. The premise that if we re-sign all the talent we have now, then all we need are upgrades. Get one in the draft, then depth and projects, and get another in FA.

So who fits that description in this year's draft???

If a GM knew for certain who fits that description, most GMs would indeed package some picks and move up.

A cheaper way of getting a higher pick is to give up a first this year for a higher pick next year. Then next year we have two first rounders and the ammo to move around. New England were very good at trading picks around for repositioning for years, though they were fairly average drafters. They haven't done it so much recently, but I do like the theory.

Extra high round picks are brilliant for allowing a team to shift its draft position around to where it wants to be, but you have to pay the price initially to do it.

Just for the fun of it, on Fanspeak (CBS Bigboard)I got Corey Davis - WR #1, Caleb Bantly -NT #2 and Samaje Perine - RB #3. (take with a shaker full of salt)

This of course goes with a CB FA signing.

Agree with that. I think this is the year TT/Wolf has to break habits and sign a Vet FA CB.
