Packers Projected to Get More Salary Cap Spending Room

Packers Projected to Get More Salary Cap Spending Room

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN on Thursday:

The Green Bay Packers aren't unique in this regard. All NFL teams will get some extra salary-cap space due to the expected bump.

If confirmed, the Packers would be close to $31 under the salary cap as opposed to the $29 million under previous assumptions.

The question is, will this influence the Packers any more than usual to be active in free agency, especially in players from outside the organization?

This is definitely starting to look like the year GB is at least a little active in FA as they don't really seem to be in any active conversations with any of their FA's and they have a lot of room to work with

Evan's picture

"...as they don’t really seem to be in any active conversations with any of their FA’s"

I don't think there is any way for us to really know that, one way or the other.

jmac3444's picture

BigJoe's picture

If they were going to bring back any of our pending FAs, at least the big name ones, they would have worked out a deal by now.

Evan's picture

"If they were going to bring back any of our pending FAs, at least the big name ones, they would have worked out a deal by now."

Nonsense.

Have any big name FAs for any team re-signed yet?

LAS VEGAS-TOM's picture

Evan, I have a question. I've made it known, that I am a James Jones fan. Why is everyone so hell bent on letting him go?? I would think he could be signed for 3 years @ $10 mill or less. What is that? He has 3 Damn good years in front of him yet. I could easily cut a couple of guy's to keep him. It's my opinion, but I think it's a Mistake to let him go. No one knows what's going to happen with Cobb or Nelson yet. I doubt if GB will break the bank to keep either one. I hope AR weighs in on his behalf again!! IMO JJ is in the same class as Cobb & Nelson. He's a damn good receiver, & well worth keeping on the team.

Evan's picture

I like Jones a lot too, but you can't keep everyone. I don't think anyone is "hell bent on letting him go" but rather aware of the realty.

I think Cobb and Nelson are both far better players and much more important to keep. If keeping them means losing Jones, then that's a trade-off the Packers have to make.

I'd say it's 40-60 that he stays.

LAS VEGAS-TOM's picture

Evan, I agree with your assessment, that someone has to go. I just wouldn't put JJ in that group. He's too good of a player to turn loose. Cobb & Nelson are Great Players, but I don't see GB paying either one what GJ wanted.
We could wind up with a whole new Receiving core. Don't ask me who I'd cut. You know who I'd Trade. I would not let JJ get away from GB. After Cobb & Nelson are signed, that might be a different story. I just can't see the sense in letting a Good Player go, when there are others that could go instead. If he wants much more than $10 mill for 3 years, than I'd wish him well. IMO, if we can sign him for $10 mill over 3, it's well worth it. Once again, I think JJ is too Good of a receiver to give to someone else.

Arlo's picture

@LAS VEGAS-TOM

Letting JJ leave would definitely be a mistake. The only way he's adequately replaced is with a highly drafted rookie and that's also a risk. (besides, they need to use their high draft picks for the D)

The problem: This is likely JJ's last long-term contract. He'll take top dollar. I doubt TT will offer top dollar. JJ was low-balled once already by GB.

Hank Scorpio's picture

"I would think he (James Jones) could be signed for 3 years @ $10 mill or less"

If that can be done, I hope the Packers do it. I would love to see James Jones back at that price. Maybe even a bit more, like say up to $12 mil for those 3 years.

Boding well for getting that done is a long list of FA WRs.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000316567/article/2014-nfl-free-age...

Evan's picture

"Boding well for getting that done is a long list of FA WRs."

And a very deep WR draft.

I wouldn't be shocked at all to see a repeat of his last dip into FA.

Hank Scorpio's picture

Evan,

I'm guessing you don't mean Matthew Mulligan. Are you suggesting a FA DL and another DB, ala the Pack's last big dip in to FA with Woodson and Pickett?

I'd rather have LB than DL but I sure wouldn't complain if you're exactly right.

Of course, judging by the comments of pretty much everyone else around here, maybe I'm off in left field on the Pack's DL.

Evan's picture

???

I mean a repeat of James jones' last dip into FA.

Stroh's picture

Hank... If the Packer dip into FA in a meaningful way I fully expect it to be at Safety and DL. We are dire need of a starting Safety and drafting one early while satisfying the masses isn't going to immediately fix the secondary's miscommunication issues. We need a Safety that can come in and help Burnett clean up the communication and solidify the secondary. Even a 1st rd pick isn't going to do that soon.

At DL the Packers have a lot of FA and if they want to help Capers get the players he wants another Longer, bigger 34 DE is a must. Datone is a good fit in base at RDE, but the LDE should be bigger.

Signing a DL and Safety would be the most significant upgrades at DL. Daniels and Worthy are probably best served as role players in nickel/dime, but not in base D.

Phatgzus's picture

Don't forget about Jarrett Boykin-yes he's young and relatively unproven, but the kid has the skills to be the next DD. If we can get JJ back on the cheap then definitely do it, but if we can't there's Boykin, and as others have said, a deep draft class at the position which could offer insurance in the event one or more of our receivers goes down...again.

Archie's picture

Given his poor drafting record in last 4 drafts (since SB), and the terrible performance of his defense since the SB, TT has no choice but to buy FAs this year or perish. Well, he could have hired all new coaches but he passed on that option. Do or die time for Whitey. My concern is that he has shown no ability for drafting defensive players in SEA or GB. That's 15 years. Hard to believe he is going to suddenly start hitting on defensive players. Even Woodson, if you will remember, TT offered Woodson and Arrington the same contract and said whoever takes it first, the other one is out of luck. Arrington used it as leverage to get a big contract from Skins and Woodson accepted his offer belatedly. Woodson came to love GB and Arrington went on to quickly bust out. So even in that case, TT lucked out big time. Just think if Arrington had signed w GB instead?

BigJoe's picture

First, there have only been 3 drafts since the SB win, and I think that blanketing them as poor is a bit of a stretch.

2011: I agree this was a bad one. Cobb has been great, we'll see on Sherrod this year.

2012: Right now I call this an average draft. Hayward looks like he could be a star. Daniels made huge strides last season. We'll have to see what Perry and Worthy can do with a full season in 2014. If they can come around, this goes from average to very good.

2013: Depending on what Jones can do in his second season, this may have been TT best draft in Green Bay. Lacy is a train, Bakhtiari was a starting LT from the 4th round, and Hyde looks like he's going to be a solid piece of our D from the 5th round. Depending on how Tretter looks back from his injury and what Franklin can do with his second year, this could easily be his best draft.

Arlo's picture

You have 2011 pegged exact --- Bad as bad can get. (Cobb, that's it)

You're judging a draft based on hope in the case of 2012 & 2013.
Lacy, Daniels, no doubt. There's a good chance Bak is a back-up in 2014. Hayward & Hyde have alot to prove, yet. ---- All the rest of the names you mentioned haven't proven they're even NFL players yet.

Stroh's picture

If Bahktiari is a backup, which IMO is very possible, it means that Sherrod is starting as well as Bulaga. Sherrod being in the starting lineup, makes the '11 draft pretty good very quickly. Getting 2 starters at important offensive positions is a good draft even if no other picks are more than role players.

Might slightly lessen the '13 draft but would substantially elevate the '11. Either way the Packers win by getting better OT play and more depth!

jmac3444's picture

Where did this Arrington or Woodson BS come from? I have never seen anywhere say that they were offered the same contract. Considering the timing of when Arrington signed and when Woodson signed, I would say you pulled this out of your butt.

Arlo's picture
4thand1's picture

Remember arloashole, they picked 32nd in 2011. The #1 broke his leg severly before he got started. Yeah, Ted's fault. You fuckin suck, that's putting it mildly.

Arlo's picture

Go away, troll. (or back to sleep)

Stroh's picture

Arlo... Between the 2 of you, YOU are THE ONLY troll. 4 and 1 provides good comments and realistic fandom. You provide nothing but derogatory negativism! There is absolutely NO doubt who the troll is. YOU!!!

You don't in any way fit the description of Fan (short for fanatic), with all your negativity of Packers related topics!

Greenville's picture

Hoping they atleast take care of Cobb or Nelson before the season starts get ethire out of the way.

Arlo's picture

It's nice in here when the homers (Stroh, 4thand1, ray nichkee, Ted Thompson, etc.) are taking their afternoon naps. --- LOL.

RC Packer Fan's picture

wow, you left me off the list...

Actually an afternoon nap does sound nice. Especially when I look outside and its pouring out...

Arlo's picture

Hell, I can easily be a homer at times but not at the risk of distorting a situation like many do. Some of these dudes only present one side to everything. --- You'll never be objective if 8-8-1 doesn't have an impact.

Honestly, I don't see you as distorting to make your point.

4thand1's picture

Stick your 8-8-1 up your troll ass. It was good enough to win the NFCN so why don't you troll the Queens, Kitties, or Barely's. Won the Div. with the scout team. Ted did a marvelous job once again. GM of the year.

Phatgzus's picture

Distortion works both ways, my friend.

4thand1's picture

I was at work loser, what were you doing besides posting crap? Must have traded in your food stamps for booze and medical marijuana. Gotta be stoned with the shit you post.

Stroh's picture

Some of us have actual careers they are concerned with. Working the graveyard shift at McD's doesn't qualify! I post when I can between my career, GF and hobbies. Less of you would be MORE for this blog!

ray nichkee's picture

Easy on the stoners man, if you've ever been stoned, (highly recommended) you would think a lot more before submitting retarded comments. I am not taking naps all the time because I have a real job which means sometimes I have to get off my ass and do shit. I would love to get paid to put piece of shit losers like cow and arlo in their place but instead I have to run a business and get my hands dirty. Arlo and cow are busy getting their hands dirty with eachothers bodily excretions. I hope you guys wash your hands before you touch the keyboard! I know who sucks on this team and I have my opinions about who to let go. This homer shit has got to end. If I am a homer you are a hater. You will never be happy. If you know so much why aren't you in indy right now? I will give your brain credit and say you are not there right now because some of your toys needed at the hotel room show up at the metal detector and you are to embarrassed to have your bag searched. That can be the only reason arlo and cow are not at the combine and are stuck at home slapping their ballsacks together. What a waste of genious.

Hank Scorpio's picture

The cap increasing more than previously expected helps a few teams get out of cap jail a bit easier. And gives the teams that like to throw around crazy money more room to do so. That's not good news for a team that has sound cap management and avoids crazy FA contracts like the plague.

LAS VEGAS-TOM's picture

Arlo, As I've said before, I'm neutral on this post. I respect everyone's opinions. We agree 100% on James Jones. I don't know what the Value would be, but I would guess $3 Mill - $3 1/2 Mill. If we could sign JJ for that over 3 years, IMO it's a bargain.
We cannot draft a High wide receiver, that's a given. Not so sure JJ will take the Best Offer, unless it's out of reach, & then, who of us would do any different?

Evan's picture

His last deal was 3 years/$9.7 mil.

He's 3 years older now, but more established. I'd expect him to get a modest raise from that.

Stroh's picture

Jones is 3 yrs older, that means closer to losing a step and they have Boykin more than ready IMO, to take over Jones' snaps. I would bring him back for less than his last contract, no more than 2M.

Arlo's picture

No argument here.
What bothers me is I'm not sure Boykin can automatically replace JJ as the 3rd WR. Besides, injuries to either Nelson and/or Cobb means someone has to step up. JJ is a proven WR. --- I hope TT/MM has the same view.

LAS VEGAS-TOM's picture

Arlo, I agree. JJ I hope you're in GB next season, you're a Packer.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing them draft a WR somewhat high. But with the depth at the position in the draft I think they can find some really good players in the 3rd-4th round that have starting qualities.

I would really like them to get a WR with return ability. They could use a return specialist.

One guy to really keep an eye on that could be a RB/WR/KR/PR is Dri Archer. Probably a 4th-5th round guy. The guy is lightning fast. He will probably run one of the fastest 40's this weekend.

Arlo's picture

Archer ---Not only fast (4.37) but quick.

"Great quickness and an explosive burst to leave defenders in his dust. Tough player who doesn't shirk from physicality and ran in the box effectively throughout his record-breaking career. Versatile player who saw action at tailback, slotback, slot receiver and as both a kick and punt returner, potentially giving his NFL team a roster spot to use on another position due to his ability to play multiple roles."

Another Cobb, D. Jackson or McCluster.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Just curious where did you find the quote on him? Its completely accurate.

The more I see on Archer the more I like. The Packers offense could really use another player similar to Cobb. I love Cobb because he provides a different dimension to the offense. Well Imagine having a 2nd player like that.
Also his ability to be a PR and KR could provide a dangerous option that we have really missed since Cobb's rookie year.

Speaking of McCluster, he is a FA. I wonder if the Packers would go after him.

Arlo's picture

This will get you to CBS homepage.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings

This directly to his page.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings

Funny that CBS raves about him but only project him as a 7th rounder or even an UDFA. I'm thinking if GB can snap him up in the 4th or 5th, do it.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Thanks for providing us the website.
BTW, I love CBS's website on the coverage of the draft. They do a tremendous job there.
Ok, I didn't read what they said about him.
That does surprise me because I see they only have him as a 7th round player. Yet they love him? Kind of odd to me. That's why I didn't think it was from CBS.

Everywhere else that I have heard, he is in the 4th round area.
Mel Kiper said yesterday in his chat that he would be a 4th rounder at the latest.

I would definitely take him in the 4th-5th round area.

Hank Scorpio's picture

I don't think the Packers would have two WRs under 5'10" in their long term plans. If they draft Archer, it would seem a signal that Cobb is going away in FA, IMO.

RC Packer Fan's picture

I disagree. Cobb really isn't a return man anymore because they don't want to risk him on special teams.
Archer will provide more help on special teams and would be more of a roll player on offense, where Cobb is a starter.

Stroh's picture

I like Moncrief in the 3rd and letting Jones go unless he signs for 2M per or less. Using a 3rd or lower on a WR would provide some depth and he wouldn't have to step into a role as large as Jones'. Boykin can certainly handle a much bigger role and IMO would be just as effective as Jones.

RC Packer Fan's picture

Yeah, I agree...

As for options for WR's, there are a lot of options. I like Brandon Coleman also. He provides a big target (6'5) and will be around a 4th round pick.
Then there is guys like Jared Abbrederis, Josh Huff, Jalen Saunders who all could factor in the return game as well.
A late round guy I really like is Matt Hazel. I also like Jeremy Gallon as a late round option.

Packers will have a lot of options at WR in the mid to late rounds to find guys that can be good players.

LAS VEGAS-TOM's picture

Evan, I agree. Don't you think he's worth it. I think he might sign for that again, but is GB willing to give it?

Evan's picture

I'd say in a vacuum he's certainly worth that - but if they are going to have to pay Cobb and Nelson upwards of $7-9 million each, I don't think a $3 million #3 WR is a luxury they can afford. But I'm not a capologist.

LAS VEGAS-TOM's picture

Evan, I guess here's where we can agree to disagree. I don't think Cobb & Nelson are worth 3 times what James Jones is worth. I also don't see GB paying Cobb or Nelson that much. We can all remember when we thought we had 2 Great receivers in DD & JW. We wound up with just DD, & I believe we went 4 & 12 that year. I don't want to see that happen again. We have a Damn good receiver in JJ, Let's keep him!!

4thand1's picture

Tom, I hate to burst your JJ's bubble but I'd be surprised if he was back. Unless it happens like last time in FA and no one comes calling.

LAS VEGAS-TOM's picture

4thand1, I'm not disagreeing with you. Is it because he'll get a Bigger Payday in FA, or is it that GB doesn't think he's worth keeping at any price? That's what's pissing me off. I agree with you, I think JJ's gone, but I personally think it's a mistake. I'm trying my Best to keep him in GB.

4thand1's picture

Sounds like he was pretty banged up at the end of the year.

Phatgzus's picture

The magnitude of the cap increase sure does crack open the door for the possibility if Shields and/or Jones coming back, especially since it's supposed to increase next year as well thanks to the deal with CBS.

Point Packer's picture

I think James Jones is gone no matter what the cap is.

steven's picture

I think the trolla forget the injuries

steven's picture

To our star qb for that fact. Lets see how good the colts, new england, broncos or any team would be without there qb.

larry valdes's picture

J jones is coming back and i m very glad he is a very good player that we needsign him to 3years contract.

BrianD's picture

Increased salary cap = greater contracts for QBs (they'll demand that extra cap space) = Green Bay's deal with Aaron Rodgers becomes more of a value every year

ray nichkee's picture

The last time jones did the free agent thing he came back and signed with green bay. He got better as a player and I think everybody should be as humble and professional as him. He is class A, top notch and I wish him the best-hopefully in green bay but he is not greg jennings so if he moves on I will continue to root for him unless he plays the pack. I wish the losers (you know who you are) who will constantly view everything but an undefeated season as compleate failure would take a lesson from jones where he started in life and where he is now. Total class act. We need more guys like him every where.

LAS VEGAS-TOM's picture

ray nichkee, Just saw the comment. I wish I could have said it that well.

"Class A, Top Notch, Total Class Act"

You couldn't have put it any better!!

Hard for me to add anything. I would just reiterate, what I've said a number of times. James Jones is Too Good of a receiver to let go, especially in the $10 Million Dollar range. That's a pretty good deal for a Damn Good Receiver.

GREAT POST RAY!!
