The Roots

Montravius Adams was born and raised in the southcentral region of Georgia where he attended Dooly County High School in Vienna, Georgia.  Adams excelled on the football field and also earned varsity letters in multiple other sports including basketball, baseball, track & field and tennis.  While being extremely athletic for his size, Adams truly excelled on the football on the defensive side of the ball.  During a stellar senior season where his team lost in the Class A Georgia state championship game, Adams tallied 127 total tackles, 34 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks in 14 games.

Following his senior year, Adams played in the Under Armor All-America Game and was a five-star recruit heading into college.  He was very highly ranked nationally according to all of the main prep ranking systems.  When it came to college interest in him, every major football conference had teams offering scholarships to him all throughout the country.  Obviously wanting to stay near his hometown in the south, he visited the programs at Georgia, Alabama, Clemson and Florida before ultimately opting to attend Auburn on National Signing Day.

Coming into Auburn, Adams hit the field right away as a true freshman with the program and recorded 20 tackles.  During his sophomore season, he would appear in 13 games with 10 starts amassing 43 tackles, eight tackles for loss, three sacks and one interception.  He would continue into his junior year by starting every game for the Tigers at nose tackle and would have 44 tackles, three tackles for loss, two and a half sacks and two forced fumbles.  During his final year at Auburn, Adams accumulated 44 tackles, four and a half sacks, one forced fumble, one interception and two blocked kicks.  His impressive senior season earned him first-team All-SEC and second-team All-American honors.  He was also invited to participate in the 2016 Senior Bowl following his senior season.

Heading into the 2017 NFL Combine and NFL Draft, Adams’ scouting report coming out of Auburn showed he was a quick off the snap and disruptive defensive tackle with a not a lot of pass rushing skills at the NFL level.  He was also noted for showing great versatility on the defensive line by being able to play several techniques.  Some scouts began questioning Adams’ effort and passion after his junior year, but his work and effort his senior year erased those doubts.  The scouting consensus heading into the 2017 NFL Draft was that Adams was a second or third round draft pick and when the Packers came up to the podium for their 93rd overall selection at the end of the third round, that’s exactly where they selected him.

Packers Career

Coming to the team as a third-round selection, hopes were high for Adams heading into training camp last year.  After impressing teammates on the defensive line right away, he suffered a stress fracture in his foot on the second day of training camp that would require surgery.  This major setback would cause him to miss all of training camp.  With the stress fracture surgery being a fairly quick recovery, the team kept him on the final 53-man roster heading into the 2017 season.

With the Packers knowing that Adams would be sidelined for at least the first couple of games of the regular season, other transactions were made with the signing of Quinton Dial prior to week one and the addition of Ricky Jean Francois early in the season.  After recouping from his foot surgery, Adams made his first gameday roster during the week three win against the Bengals.  After that game, Adams was a healthy scratch until the November and December games came where he would suit up on game days six more times.

In what should basically be considered a redshirt season at the NFL level in 2017, Adams would only see a total of 66 total defensive snaps on the year and would record two tackles.

The Future

Coming off of a rookie year that was hampered by an early injury, Adams gets a pass on all judgment heading into his second year with the Packers.  Missing training camp, a time that is vital in preparing a rookie for action in the NFL, was just too detrimental to tell where Adams is at skill wise against his competition.

Heading into this season, the defensive tackle definitely has the tools in his arsenal to succeed.  These tools should pair nicely with him learning behind Mike Daniels, Kenny Clark and Mo Wilkerson. Being a third-round pick for the team, Adams will be given all the opportunities needed to succeed.  If he stays healthy through camp and proves to be a dynamic power on the line, the defensive line will be a force to be reckoned with when the regular season begins.

M. Adams is why I don't expect a DL pick this year, at least not before a late 5th. He was tossing guys around at the Senior Bowl and got rave reviews for his work through that week.

The Packers saw nothing from him last year (same with OLB Biegel), but they could both give a big boost to the team, at positions where the Packers need rotation help.

I don't know how others feel about Adams, but I'm pretty positive on both him and Biegel.

This is why I suspect a defensive back for their first pick in the draft. While the pass rush struggled last year they at least have a great dline, nick perry, and a development project with beigel. Cornerbacks are just king, williams, and a bunch of UDFAs, and the safeties are just josh jones and haha. Pass rush is in a better spot imo than secondary.

I like Evans and Brice at safety. I agree that CB is thin. Very thin.

Biegel is a big unknown. I'm not sold that either CM3 or Nick Perry will every see a double-digit sack year (again). It will probably come down to CB v. OLB, and which position has the highest rated guy left on the board.

I see your point, but the Eagles and Vikes showed just how far an elite D line rotation can take you, even with mediocre QB play. I’d love to add Hurst in there.

With Suh, Donald, Brockers, Easley etc, Rams are going to destroy the regular season. Got to try and match that.

I looked at the Packers next year schedule and looked at the end of year rankings for the O-line outfits for these teams. Admittedly, last year is last year, and teams evaluate and address weaknesses year-on-year, but it would be a fair estimation that on most counts a poor unit will not transform into an elite unit one year to the next - they will generally go from poor to mid or mind/high at best... but not top 5.

That said, 10 of the 16 opponents next year had a bottom 1/3 ranked O-Line for either pass or rush or both. Only 5 had a top 1/3 o-line (note that in this the pats have just lost their left tackle in FA - nate solder).

Where I'm going with this - draft Vita Vea (preferred), Da'Ron Payne or Maurice Hurst at #14 and attack the 2018 opponents weakest position group with what will be GB's strongest (excluding Rodgers).

By all means come back in for CB and EDGE as early as can be traded after this, but from the professional analysts lips, they aren't expecting any but the top 1-2 picks in each of these groups to be day 1 starters

I hope he can do somsomething this year. Didn't show much last year and only 22 reps on beach for a DT? That's probably why they got Wilkinson, they must not have see Adams as a good rotational player at this point. Plus Mo has better pass rush

Its hard for me to get too excited about Teds Glass Menagerie roster. But on a positive note, I heard he could be another Justin Harrell or Datone Jones...! sorry... (insert downcast eyes / head shaking emoji here)

It is way too early to predict how well Adam's can play short and long term. In your list with Harrell and Jones, you missed Neal, Worthy, Thornton and Pennell (although an UDFA), even with hitting home runs on Daniels & Clark, Thompson sure took it in the shorts on the D-Line. Drafting WR was just the opposite, not many he missed at that position.

Totally agree Lou, too early. Actually other players were semi raving about the kid in camp before he got injured. Guys saying he was semi a beast. Guess we'll see, in truth, we need him to develop, we need more depth and rotation on that line.

And, ya, I know right, on the additions to the list of futility..

You forgot BJ Raji who was a damn good Nose Tackle early on. Add this to the Dom Capers "take a player away from his natural sweet spot position" list by making him a DE and he was never quite the same in the interior (injuries included) when he was moved back in.

Packers recently have been 1-2 pieces short of a good, dominant D-line, and this wastes good positional talent here, as well as on the Edge.

Adams basically redshirted his first year in the NFL. Given a year to watch & learn along with an offseason in the weightroom he should be productive this season if he's the real deal.

Thompson had more misses than hits when it came to his efforts to improve the DL, hopefully Adams is one of his "hits".

I am not impressed with Adams. How hard is it to learn to play DT? Its true that he can get better with time on the little things but the team must not have seen much progress in practice to have him be a gameday scratch.
But then again it could have been Capers fault...

Playing any position in the NFL is hard, especially as a rookie. More than a few fans thought Clark was another Packer first-round bust after his first 10 games. And Daniels did not do much either, except for his long return. Who would have thought Martinez would have a breakout season after a lackluster initial year? Even Primetime was beaten deep occasionally as a rookie. We'll see if Adams improves this year and next. Until then, we should reserve judgement.

Agree, but with all due respect the only way he won't improve this year is if he is a total bust.

Exactly - which means that ranking of a team's draft after year one is relatively worthless - just something for sports writers to do. The real assessment should be after year 3. That is why I think that TT was not a particularly good drafter in certain areas - ie back up QB and LB ( exception of Matthews). But sometimes it is not about the big hits as much as avoiding the big mistakes - Tony Mandarich, Ahmad Carroll.

You obviously are not familiar with strength & conditioning. How many college interior lineman start and are impactful? The answer is “very few”.

holmsmd, BJ Raji's first year was arguably one of his best... but you are correct, not many.

All, remember that Kenny Clark was only 19 when he was drafted. That's way young for a NT.

First off Mt. Adams is a huge man. Second, he's very athletic. The hardest position to start in the NFL, outside of QB, is Dline....why? Because you are colliding, and smashing against men your size or bigger and they have muscle mass that even Mt. Adams doesn't have. Clark was a pretty good player in the last few games of his rookie year. His second year...he was damn good. The reason players were impressed with Adams last year was his athletic ability. They see something special and I bet this year we will see a different player.
Now, do the Packers pick a down lineman in this year's draft? I have no idea, but there are several good space eaters that could be good players down the road.

Mostly because the NFL so favor the passing game. O lineman now can grab and not be called for holding. Only way to get a holding call in this league is to 'pancake' a D lineman. With CB you see how unfair it is because they are playing in space. With D lineman it is like a mosh pit, hard to see with everyone bunched up like that.

I believe factors that makes a DL job more difficult is that the OL:
1) Know the snap count
2) Know whom to block and which way to drive them
3) Know if it’s a run or pass
4) May hold as previously mentioned
5) do not expend the vast amount of energy that DL do...
And that’s a start but, who cares here???

I'd lower expectations for Adams this year. I like his potential, but for all intensive purposes, he's basically a rookie still. I think he'll be a nice player for us eventually.

I'm wondering how much the desire to sign Wilkerson has to do with Montravius not being what they'd hope for him to be?

If they thought they had a dominant stud in him the desire to sign Wilkerson would've been less. I realize the Pettine connection with Wilkerson, but Mont showed nothing last year, so they can't be very high on him right now and needed an upgrade.

Perhaps, Year 3 is his year as it doesn't appear to be this year from trying to read the tea leaves.

Also could be that they just need more DL for the type of system they plan on running. Most teams running a 3-4 or a 4-3 or even hybrids of those 2 variations require more DL to run those than what we had on the roster. So glad I'm not going to have to watch 2 DL and a bunch of LBs trying to generate pressure and stop runs. It was getting sickening. Or any psycho/ Nitro tweeter BS in there.

I think you mean he was hurt all year and they signed a 1 yr insurance policy. The kid is also young. It usually takes a few years in the weight room and physical maturity to blossom for interior D-lineman.

John, with Wilkerson only signed to a 1 year deal its a great opportunity for both Wilkerson and Adams to step up and show what they have.

Also, Adams' scout report states that he has weaknesses as a pass defender, so I guess thats the main place where the Packers believe that wilkerson would have an advantage over him
