Packers Podcast: Return Ability Is Added Value for Abbrederis

The Wisconsin product has the ability to be both a wide receiver and return specialist in Green Bay.

On Monday morning I joined Bart Winkler of K107 in Fond du Lac to wrap up the NFL Draft from a Green Bay Packers perspective. After discussing the selection of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix on Friday, today we focused on the rest of the rookie class, focusing on a pair of wide receivers in pair of wide receivers in particular: Davante Adams and Jared Abbrederis.

I was high on Abbrederis before the draft. I really like that he adds return ability and I feel he is/was an underrated player. He continually put up good numbers against great competition without any other WR's to take attention away from him. Also he blew up Roby.
IMO, if he was in last years draft he would have been a 2nd-3rd round pick. Since this year was so deep at WR he fell to the 5th.

I wasn't big on the Abbrederis pick because I think he's a true developmental project instead of someone who can contribute in even a special teams way immediately which is what I think a 5th round pick should be capable of and focused on more than pure development. I say this because I don't think he's capable of cutting it in the NFL until he bulks up quite a bit; he'll need to add size and strength in order to survive the type of hits he's going to be subjected to. Without the added size and strength he's just going to be a guy who's going to be an injury liability which Green Bay won't deal with at that position; therefore, my guess is that he ends up spending the season on the PS (and I don't think another team adds him to their 53, but I could be wrong) along with possibly Jeff Janis while guys like Davante Adams, Kevin Dorsey, and Chris Harper are the ones who'll end up pushing for the 4th and 5th receiver spots -- maybe even a 6th. Hell, I could even envision Davante Adams pushing for the 3rd receiver spot over Boykins if he's able to demonstrate his skills as well as an understanding of the offensive system from the early goings. Again, I could be completely wrong and Abbrederis' route running earns him a spot on the 53 man roster over guys like Kevin Dorsey and Chris Harper, but I don't think he'll be activated on game days.

We helped our team in this draft, talk about competition. If I was White or Dorsey I might not sleep to easy.

And that's what it's all about. I think so many people (players AND coaches) got comfortable.

For those doubting Abbrederis only because the lack of strength just look at Myles White. None of you were questioning his ability (even though none of us expected anything). He actually looks like a middle schooler. Yea,Myles benched more but what does that have to do with his footwork?

The bench press is quite possibly the most useless drill at the combine. Football is played on your feet not your back, there's very little carry over.

Prepare to be underwhelmed at the all time great combine pressers...

Strength is still very important in the NFL. Bottom line, it's a physical game and if your opponent knows you are weaker then he can exploit that and win most one-on-one battles. Even WRs have to muscle their way around with the DBs. The stronger guy (see R. Sherman) will usually win those battles. I read somewhere recently where the press is relevant to strength up to a certain amount of reps (maybe 15-18 or so) then it's more of an endurance test. Let's face it, Abbrederis fell to the bottom of the 5th and probably one reason was his lack of raw strength. If he hits the weights and gains some muscle and keeps his head from getting cracked again he should be a very good value for a 5th round pick.

I don't really disagree with much said above. I think Adams at some point this season will be on the field quite a bit. Better talent than Boykin. Rodgers loves receivers who run great routes. Think Greg Jennings. So I think Abbrederis has a decent chance, particularly if he can return punts and kickoffs, but the competition at WR should be fierce. Unless his lack of strength really shows on the field or he otherwise stinks up the place, it normally is hard to get 5th round picks onto the PS.
