Packers Podcast: Opportunity for J.C. Tretter to Lock Up Starting Gig

With a good showing against the Rams, J.C. Tretter could win the starting center job in Green Bay.

On Friday morning I joined Bart Winkler of K107 in Fond du Lac for our weekly game preview, this time looking ahead to Saturday's preseason game pitting the Packers against the Rams. We get into Jordy Nelson's injury situation, but also some of the roster battles still taking place and whether Scott Tolzien can win the backup quarterback job.

If Tretter does lock up the job (and I expect he will this week or next) I hope to see Linsley get some reps at Guard

McGinn's roster breakdown today (which I have some big issues with, ie Sean Richardson is "on the fence." Seriously?). But anyway, he said that Linsley backed-up Guard at OSU in 2010-2011. That was awhile ago, but maybe the position isn't entirely foreign to him?

Then again, in the same breath he also said Linsley is short for Guard. McGinn lists him at 6'2 1/2" but every site I can find says he's 6'3". Either way, Sitton is 6'3" and Lang is 6'4". I find it hard to believe that 1/2 inch makes that much of a difference.

Just an FYI, they take accurate measurements at the NFL Combine to an eighth of an inch and then NFL teams round up 1/2 inch and above so they don't list fractions on their published rosters.

Interesting. His NFL.com combine profile says 6'3".

So that's the more accurate number?

No, they have probably rounded up as well. You won't find fractions of an inch on height on any NFL-sponsored website. But they will publish fractions on things like hand size. Weird, I know.

I'm sure Linsley could play Guard if there was an emergency. Sherrod can play guard or tackle. I wouldn't be surprised if TT picks up a guard off waivers after the final pre-season game. Hard to say at this point.

NFP thought Linsley was 6'2" before his offical measurements. And you can see by all the thumbs down what bright, knowledgeable Packers fans thought about Linsley when I thought he'd be a good pickup in the draft.
