Packers Place Randall Cobb on Injured Reserve, Designated to Return

The Packers also made it official by signing wide receiver Myles White and tight end Jakes Stoneburner and placed Greg Van Roten on injured reserve.

Any hope that Randall Cobb's timetable for return from a broken fibula would be less than eight weeks has flown out the window.

The Green Bay Packers placed Cobb on injured reserve with their one designated to return option available to them this season.

By rule, each NFL team can designate one player who can be replaced on the 53-man roster temporarily. Cobb is not eligible to practice for six weeks and not eligible to play for eight.

The earliest Cobb can play next is Week 15 on Dec. 15 against the Dallas Cowboys.

When Cobb is eligible to come off injured reserve, the Packers will have to make room for him on their roster once again.

However, the Packers are not required to bring Cobb back. He could be placed on season-ending injured reserve, such as they did last season with running back Cedric Benson.

In order to add some help at at wide receiver, the Packers promoted Myles White from the practice squad. White seems best suited for the role of slot receiver in the mold of Cobb.

Even with the addition the Packers would still seem to be thin at wide receiver if James Jones doesn't play on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Along with White, Jordy Nelson and Jarrett Boykin are the only fully healthy wide receivers on the roster.

The Packers also made it official an earlier report that tight end Jake Stoneburner would be elevated from the practice squad as well. Currently, they have five tight ends and four wide receivers on the active roster.

In order to make room for White and Stoneburner, the Packers also placed offensive lineman Greg Van Roten on season-ending injured reserve. Van Roten injured his foot during practice shortly after the team's bye week.

Taking one of the of the two spots on the Packers' practice squad is linebacker Victor Aiyewa, a first-year player that last spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in training camp of 2011.

There's still one more opening the Packers can fill on their practice squad.

Jake Stoneburner catching passes from Teddy Bridgewater would be so awesome.

What are the chances that Dom Capers uses Datone Jones standing up and flowing to the football for a change of pace sub packages against the Browns

Non-existent would be my guess. They don't want to overload a rookie who is just trying to find a niche on D this year.

I hope that White pans out- he didn't impress me much in what I saw in the preseason. The only thing I really noticed is that he was Vince Young's favorite target.

I was not too concerned with how much I saw of white in the pre-season. Instead I was looking at his quickness and agility. He has both of those traits. It's a matter of how he adapts to this offense. I'm excited about him.

Yeah, thank God for Lacey. He can take much of the load off the passing game and help keep us afloat for 6-8 weeks. I wonder when Starks will come back but he's never been a quick healer so who knows? Stoneburner and White don't have to be special but just be able to contribute when called upon. Just somehow get through the next 6-8 weeks without anymore damage. I know that's asking way too much though.

So who's our backup C?

Barclay? Lang? The longsnapper?

I'd guess Lang, but they really need to sign a backup G/C.

Maybe Lang at C, Barclay at G and Sherrod at T if EDS goes down. Knock on wood.

Sherrod is on the PUP list. It would be Newhouse at T.

PUP is over. Sherrod can practice tomorrow and McCarthy said he's ready to go. Keep your fingers crossed.

But, yeah, that lineup would be my dream lineup. Newhouse is more likely.

I asked elsewhere - when/if Sherrod is full go, I wonder if he'll he stay at LT or work at both sides? Keeping him at LT makes more sense since that's his natural position and he's going to have quite a bit of rust. But working at both sides would certainly increase his chances of contributing this season.

I wouldn't count on seeing Sherrod getting any playing time this year. He hasn't even practiced in 2 full years. He's not going to be able to get on the field, unless due to a few injuries this year.

That said, its important for Sherrod to get as much practice reps as he can to start to knock the rust off. Newhouse will continue to be the primary backup OT, especially since he has experience playing both OT spots.

Lets just hope Sherrod can get his reps in practice and be ready to come back in the off-season ready to fight for a starting job. IMO that's the best case scenario.

I hope not, since Lang has probably been our best Olineman so far this year. Although I don't really have any other bright ideas.

like i said after game sunday, johnson was a stiff with measurables, white has the talent. a bit much though to expect major contribution from him or stoneburner right out of the gate. but,you know ted,no way he would even think of adding any player who has ever played a down for another team, even if it may be in our best interest.several vets out there, breaston...lloyd....laurent robinson, but 200 percent says he will never consider it.anyone want to bet???

I agree in that I doubt TT will bring in a vet at this time. I think he and MM are more comfortable with the guys currently on the team that they know. At least they know how to plug them in to get the most from them. As for Johnson I wasn't that unhappy he went to Cleveland. His main skill set seemed to be hopping into the jacuzzi. Just what we need right now.

McGinn, who is generally a good judge of talent, was really high on Stoneyburner during preseason and actually mentioned that he had an outside shot to make the initial 53.

Johnson certainly didn't look like a stiff to me. I would MUCH, MUCH rather have him than White. I can almost guarantee the Packers would have rather let WHite go instead of Johnson. Whites quickness numbers at his pro say weren't much better than Johnsons and he's about 35 lbs lighter. Johnson is a far superior athlete.

In fact Johnsons quickness number are very similar to Randall Cobbs. That doesn't indicate a stiff athlete whatsoever.

EDS moves up to 3rd in ranking of Packers that cannot get hurt (behind Rodgers and Burnett). He has been so solid since coming in last year. He really has been a huge reason as to why the center of the line is such a strength and he really brings the nasty to the game. We don't have anyone legit to fill in if he gets hurt.

Please EDS don't get hurt.

At this point. EDS is #2. Burnett although has been great since he has returned, the other safety's showed they can at least win without him. EDS, no backups now.

I think this was the smart move for Cobb. Even if he might have been ready a little sooner he will need a little time to get his body ready to play again. No sense in rushing him back and leaving him vulnerable to injury.

Stoneburner, I don't know, I just have a good feeling about him. Looks like a lot of 2 TE sets coming up for the next couple of weeks. Fortunately, with the Browns and Vikings on tap, this is the low point of the Packers schedule. Hopefully JJ will be ready for the Bears.

What is Tavarres King thinking? He'd rather be a healthy scratch for the Broncos than the Packers #3 WR?

granted, johnsons measurables are thru the roof, but the little we got to see him in pre season,he struck me as a darius hayward bey type, just not a natural pass catcher, could be wrong who knows. white may be fragile, but sure looked like a smooth operator with another gear thats compareable to cobbs,but....he is still a rookie, so i wouldnt expect too much this year.nfl am is on in the background right now, and they just insinuated to tyler dunn, that the pack may have interest in HAKEEM NICKS, he laughed just about as much as i am right now. no way ted goes outside organization

Didn't he just try to do that with Tavarres King?

very different. He basically was trying to sign King as a free agent. Hakeem Nicks he would have to trade for.
He would cost a lot more money plus draft picks.
King essentially would of cost nothing...

While trading for Nicks is unlikely, if he is available there is a chance Thompson would be interested in him. Given how short-handed the Packers are at WR at the moment he'll look into any WR that might be acquired. However, looking ahead, James Jones is a FA after this year and if he can get Nicks at a reasonable price, both in trade and contract it is conceivable Nicks could be a fit. He is a similar version of Jones, but IMO a better talent. It would be a similar situation to when he was interested in trading for Lynch.
