Packers' Oren Burks capable of being 'Swiss Army knife' type of player

-- He may be wearing No. 42 and offer similar traits to that of the previous suitor, but Oren Burks isn't Morgan Burnett.

The Green Bay Packers' No. 88 overall pick, Vanderbilt linebacker Oren Burks, who they traded a fourth and a fifth-rounder to move up 13 spots into the third round to get, brings his own set of distinctive qualities to the Packers' revamped defense.

Burnett, now under contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, left the Packers with a sizeable void on defense -- not just at safety, but in various positions in which he played.

A former safety before transitioning to linebacker for his final two collegiate years as Commodore, Burks is just the kind of fast-paced linebacker the Packers need to fill in over the middle of the field opposite Blake Martinez, who is the presumed starter and a likely foundational piece in defensive coordinator Mike Pettine's scheme.

Just for the sake of his versatility and having the potential to play multiple positions, that coincides nicely with Burks bringing added value to the roster -- specifically to a weakened position.

"The versatility adds a lot of value to the team," Burks said on Thursday after the Packers wrapped up their final minicamp practice before summer break.

"I can cover tight ends, running backs and still be a factor over the middle. Just adding all of those parts of the game is extremely important."

Between Burks and second-year safety Josh Jones, the Packers have young but flexible talent to keep up with whatever comes their way over the middle of the field. And they can certainly use the help there.

Since 2013, the Packers' defense under former coordinator Dom Capers only allowed a yearly completion percentage under 62.2 percent when targeted over the middle of the field twice: 2014 and 2015.

The 66.8 completion percentage across the middle allowed in 2017 was their worst, with 56.5 percent in 2014 being their best.

Adding speed and someone like Burks with the range and instinctive ability to roam across the middle of the field wasn't only a luxury pick at No. 88 overall when the Packers already have a duo of safeties -- Jones and Kentrell Brice -- who can play inside, but it was a necessity.

Not only can Burks handle coverage duties, but during his final two years at Vanderbilt, he showed he was also very much capable of rushing the opposing quarterback en route to 4.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for a loss in his junior and senior seasons.

Translating human Swiss Army knife-like nature to a defense who values players of such type just means Burks landed in the right situation at the right time.

For the 6-3, 233-pound Burks, it's just about limiting any rookie mistakes and cleaning up other facets of his game. He may not be much in the realm of starting material just yet, but with a firm grasping of Pettine's teachings, a rotational role isn't out of the question.

"I definitely feel as OTAs and minicamp went on, I got a lot more comfortable with things," Burks said. "Just communication and eliminating the mental errors and things like that. I just have to take that momentum and keep rolling with it going into training camp."

The Packers won't be back on the practice field until Thursday, July 26. They report to this year's training camp regimen on Wednesday, July 25.

I just want the defense to fly to the ball and gang tackle. This defense should be a lot faster and fun to watch.

Too bad Burke has a whiny crybaby unsuccessful defensive coordinator(assistant head coach?).

Please get a new linebackers coach with some positive energy for the players and fans.

What's the "whiny crybaby" stuff about?

Go watch videos of Winston Moss's interviews from minicamp. He was pretty uncooperative and unprofessional IMO.

After watching the vids, uncooperative and unprofessional is pretty spot on. That's not what a whiny crybaby looks like though, lol.

At any rate, an obviously irritated/angry and less-than-cooperative Winston Moss in a press conference isn't an indicator of a poor coach on the field.

My pick for a diamond in the rough. His cover skills are much needed at the linebacker position. And he can rush the passer. He has exceptional speed for a linebacker and is a very versatile player. He will help fill the void from the departure of Burnett. I'm sure his name will be mentioned more than a few times during the season and his playmaking abilities also make the highlight reels. A player with great potential.

I liked Burnett and the defense played better when (!) he was on the field. However, the NFL is a game of replacement and staying younger and faster. I'm hoping Burke will be a quick learner in Pettine's system.

They got Burks to replace Mathews who is probably in his last year with pack. He will be the next Jordy. Perry is probable too.

So long as the Packers play any kind of 3-4 as a base defense, and so long as any kind of traditional roles persist, there's no way Burks replaces CMIII. He might be well-suited to be a weak side LB in a 4-3, but I don't see any way he plays the edge in a 3-4. If CMIII has the renaissance some are projecting under Pettine, they might try to retain him...clearly not at his current cap number.

I don't know how "team friendly" a guy like CMIII would be willing to lean.

Maybe I'm wrong, but he seems pretty self centered to me.

True, but 'team-friendly' at 27 or 28 is a lot different from 'team-friendly' at 32 or 33.

...and especially if he's allowed to test the market first. I think he'll be looking for that opportunity.

That's the thing, though.. He's a pass rusher. Someone WILL pay him too much elsewhere.

If Perry looses another 3-5 games due to another injury I expect him to be gone next year. Matthews could stick for a substantial pay cut.
We can't afford to replace both in one year.

Given his contract...

Unless he agrees to renegotiate, he's not going anywhere for a couple years...

Agreed. Moreover, you can't renegotiate a signing bonus. He's on GB unless and until GB is willing to eat $19.1M, $11.1/$15.9M or $7.4M, depending on the year.

Swiss Army knives have lots of half assed tools......none of which are used by professionals of specific disciplines.

Jones was the "swiss army knife" last year.

Hopefully, Pettine can get players playing faster. It took several games with Capers' over-complicated scheme before a young player could kind of fit in.

Jonathan, I've got to agree that this sentence makes zero semantic sense. I have no clue what the (heck) this is supposed to mean. Either it was a 'luxury' pick or a 'necessity pick'. Beats me what this was supposed to mean. At a guess :) I'd think the author is trying to say that having another safety is a 'luxury' but someone extra who can excel at playing the inside was a 'need'. A whole lot of gobbledygook for me! If you find that decoder ring I'd like a copy!!!

I advise you to negotiate for the animal powers.
You won't feel so good about the deal if you get stuck with "Form of water" powers.

Meh. Burks was dominated when he played some of the better talent in the SEC. Go watch his tape vs Alabama or Tennessee - it's pretty awful. He's fast, but his awareness & ability to shed are severely lacking. For whatever reason, GB just cannot draft well in the 3rd rd. That being said, I think Gutey hit home runs with Jaire, JJ, & J'Mon.

I questioned this trade up. But he is replacing Thomas. They worked him out. If he can't play/Busts. They need to change how they go about working players out before the draft. (Blame Moss) Gute went need in his trade ups. And that Costs! I would have put Jones here first. I still feel that Ha Ha Dix should be a SS now. That one of the CBs could make the switch to safety.

Just a little food for thought. Update; 6/24/18, homas - TE - Panthers
Panthers TE Ian Thomas got reps with the first-team offense at minicamp.
Thomas made only 11 starts in his two years at Indiana but blew up the Combine (91st-percentile SPARQ). The Panthers drafted Thomas as a project but he's shown enough to push Chris Manhertz for the No. 2 job behind Greg Olsen. Thomas has the pass-catching skills for a rookie impact.

With two oft injured edge rushers and one on the downside of his career, next year will be the time to reload. 2019 will supply a very good edge, OLB class...

...when Gute will have 2 #1’s!

I like Burks as a coverage LB with more size than Burnett.

But can he hold up against guards on draws? We'll see. He has a terrific line protecting him, so on paper, Burks looks ideal.

I'm still more excited about Josh Jones in a blitzing, gap-shooting role.

I don't think Burks is going to see too many guards pulling during draw plays, so we may have dodged a bullet there.

Sorry, mixed up plays. But I still want to see Burks deal with guards, finding his way to ball carriers. There's some real potential in his game.
