Packers Need To Toughen Up

That's it, really.

For all the talk from McCarthy about how he would like nothing more than to run the football all game, the game on Sunday should finally throw open the door on the secret that has gone unpronounced until now:

The Green Bay Packers are a finesse team.

Never in a million years did I think this would be the case. Even when the Lynn Dicky led Packers were throwing it around the yard, the team was full of nasty guys like Ezra Johnson or Larry McCarren. Where is that nasty now? Nick Barnett, for all his bluster, is more bark than bite. And do you think for a moment that any team has ever been afraid to face A.J. Hawk? On the other side of the ball, Jason Spitz was advertised as having a bit of fight to him when he came out of college, but the play where Pierce shut down the screen to Morency by plowing through Spitz puts that assertion into doubt.

Overall, the Packers are a speedy, aggressive team that can't hit anyone in the mouth. It was clear from the first called running play that the Packers o-line was over matched by the d-line of the Giants. Even Bubba Franks, so effective the week before, was getting blown of the ball when he tried to block for Grant. Ted Thompson needs to give McCarthy some hard-hitting, nasty players. Players that are suited to playing in Green Bay in December and January. It's something Ron Wolf understood and something that will ensure the Packers are never again physically over matched when it matters most.

Had not thought about the Packers being a finesse team, but you are right-on. They are. And a good finesse team. Only thing is, as you point out, finesse teams don't always win in December and January-type conditions. Ya gotta have some smash-mouth in your toolbox. Therefore, short of doming Lambeau (blasphemy!!), we do need a beast or two.
